Where else would society-beauty-cum-accessories-designer Tinsley Mortimer give me a sneak peek at her new Dior Jetsetter Palette but on a private jet en route to the Hamptons? St. Moritz, London, Paris, Vienna, Venice, and Tokyo are just some of the destinations where the globe-trotting Mortimer and her clan have spent recent months.
Unzipping the palette's black-patent-trimmed case, Mortimer reveals a Lilliputian tray with mini versions of Dior Show mascara, a caramel lip gloss, a shimmery skin illuminator ("I love it just under my brows"), a berry-toned blush, and pans of eyeshadow that resemble a muted rainbow of French macaroons.
"These are my favorite shades," she says. "But they do look good on everyone." And, save for the cotton-candy-hued shadow, I find the colors surprisingly flattering on me.
Now, if only I could master her signature ringlets....
SKIN'S ADVANCE GUARD
Like Airborne for skin, EMERGENCY BOOSTERS from My Blend, the custom mix-and-match skin-care line from French surgeon Olivier Courtin, work best if you use them preemptively. So, before a beach holiday, I'll add the healing mimosa-packed Speedy Recovery to my night cream, and in anticipation of plane travel, I power up with the superhydrating Moisture Immersion.
Salon icon VIDAL SASSOON and industry vet Mary Rector-Gable have teamed up with star stylists from Garren to Danilo to form Hairdressers Unlocking Hope, which helps Katrina-displaced families. "My mother lost our house when I was young," Sassoon says. "I know what it's like to be homeless." With an assist from Habitat for Humanity, he envisions "a village built by hairdressers" in Louisiana's St. Tammany Parish.
