As the world congratulated longtime Saturday Night Live veteran Seth Meyers on his new Late Night gig back in August, there was one question on everyone's mind: Who will take over as Weekend Update co-anchor? NBC assuaged any and all of our anxieties yesterday by confirming that featured player Cecily Strong will join Meyers starting on the Sept. 28 premiere. Strong, who first joined the SNL cast last year, gained momentum by portraying "The Girl You Wish You Would Have Never Started a Conversation With at a Party".
Cecily, from the first show, was right there, SNL's producer and writer Lorne Michaels told The New York Times. "She exploded." Strong hails from Chicago's Second City Conservatory, a legendary breeding ground for SNL cast members and writers.
Weekend Update has been an SNL tradition dating back to the show's first-ever episode with Chevy Chase as anchor on Oct. 11, 1975. Meyers had previously shared the Update desk with Amy Poehler from 2006-2008, and has anchored the segment alone since Poehler's departure.
