New Diesel Campaign Features Wheelchair-Bound Model



Fashion designer Nicola Formichetti continues to do awesome things with his "reboot" of Italian denim brand Diesel. In his role as the label's artistic director, last season's ads included models found on Tumblr, with plus-size graffiti artist Michelle Calderon, androgynous model Omahrya Mota and former Olympic swimmer Casey Legler in the mix.

This season, the #DieselReboot campaign features, among others, 23-year-old fashion blogger Jillian Mercado (above right). Though wheelchair-bound since the age of 12 (she has spastic muscular dystrophy), Mercado is a graduate of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, a writer at her site Manufactured1987, and a well-known, well-styled fashion week presence. Formichetti describes her as an inspiration, and says "she’s totally fearless." "You don’t have to be a conventional model type to represent [my] brand," he continued.

With that said, the new campaign also features "Harujuku style icon" Hirari Ikeda, models with neon hair, copious tattoos and beards, and these cool kids with glitter on their faces:



Because a sparkly silver forehead is a perfect look for spring/summer 2014, and ALWAYS.
