Hair Trends at the U.S. Open

Whether it was the purple locks on Bethanie Mattek-Sands, magenta braids on Venus Williams, or Rafael Nadal's man-bangs, beauty has been a focal point at the U.S. Open. Hairstyles on the court are no longer solely about function; players are now setting beauty trends as well. Salon owner Julien Farel, the tournament's official hair stylist, says, "They're taking hairstyles that are athletic and purposeful for the court and modernizing them to be more stylish." Farel is no stranger to the game of tennis; he has been the U.S. Open's stylist for seven years and had a pop-up salon at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Grounds where pros stopped into get their hair and nails done before and after matches. So how does Farel create a style that will uphold Maria Sharapova's backhand? Road tests, obviously. The stylist's team tries out trendy looks to ensure they can withstand extreme weather and stiff competition. A few of his fashionable favorites this year: a braided teased pony that looks great during the game but still works well courtside. As Andre Agassi once said, "Image is everything."
