The International Abortion Debate Takes Chile

The International Abortion Debate Takes Chile

Share

Chile is facing international criticism regarding its strict abortion policy: An 11-year-old girl became pregnant after her stepfather repeatedly raped her, according to BBC. Abortion is currently illegal under all circumstances in Chile, including rape — even when pregnancy poses health risks. The girl, referred to as "Belen", said in an interview that she would have the baby, which would be "like having a doll."

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera responded to Belen's decision to have the child by saying she shows "depth and maturity." Pinera's comments have incited an international outcry, shedding light on the Chilean abortion policy while also playing a political role. The former President Michelle Bachelet who is running for office responded to the situation by saying, "the option of abortion, in this case, for rape, seems to be the right solution."
