Pre-Fashion Week Catch-Up With Katie Ermilio

Share

One young designer who is making a serious mark on the New York fashion scene is Katie Ermilio, whose playful — yet impeccably tailored — dresses are quickly becoming a favorite of editors, buyers, and celebrities alike. Pairing classic cuts with bold colors and romantic, feminine details like bows and ruffles, her pieces evoke the spirit of a modern day Grace Kelly — who, in fact, employed Katie's grandfather as her own personal tailor! Before she unveils her new glamorous collection next week, the designer chatted with us about a typical day in her life during New York Fashion Week.

How long are your days on average during Fashion Week?
Work days can go on long into the night in the weeks leading up to Fashion Week. Preparing a collection is definitely not a nine-to-five thing, sometimes the most productive work happens in those very early hours well after midnight. Utilizing any spare moments in effort to make the collection the best it can be is essential.

Do you have a go-to Fashion Week uniform?
I have been living in Acne Jeans and heavily rotating my Peter Jensen Cable Knit Sweater and APC Sweatshirt. My uniform is pretty much a pre-Fashion Week thing because I know I’m going be on my hands and knees in fittings, cutting fabric, and overseeing the entire process of the samples being made. These are all things that call for comfort —, and right now in New York City, warmth!

What’s the first aspect of normal life to go out the window during Fashion Week ?
I really know Fashion Week prep is in full swing once I stop seeing my friends. They are amazing and know that at a certain point before I present the collection I am totally going to fall off the grid.

Is there a particular food or drink that you survive on during Fashion Week preparations?
Peppermint Luna Bars. I live off of them!

Could you give us a five song playlist that is characteristic of what your team will be listening to in the studio during Fashion Week prep?
We’ve had the following on repeat in the studio:
Solange Knowles - “Losing You”
CHVRCHES - “The Mother We Share”
Rihanna feat. Kanye West - “Diamonds Remix”
Ellie Goulding - “Anything Could Happen”
Adele - “Chasing Pavements (Urban Noize Remix)”

Do you have a Fashion Week “survival kit”? Name a few things that we could find in your bag at any given time during the shows.
I always have my wristband pin cushion on-hand for fittings. RGB cuticle oil is always in my bag — my hands take a beating during collection development so this stuff saves me. I have no time for a beauty routine at all, so I keep MAC Lip Glass in my pocket to dab on my eyelids when I need a pick-me-up. Then there's Caudalié Lip Conditioner. Can’t live without them!
