Pharrell Williams: 'It's Impossible For Me To Be a Feminist'

Pharrell Williams has addressed the controversy surrounding last year's hit single 'Blurred Lines'.

In an interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy for Channel 4 News, the singer denied that the lyrics he wrote for the song questioned "a woman's right to say no".

Speaking about the controversy surrounding the line "I know you want it", Pharrell responded: "Is it sexually suggestive when a car salesman says to a person who's trying to buy a car, 'I know you want it'?

"If I can tell you're hungry and I say, 'I know you want it', does that mean I'm going to rape you?"

'Blurred Lines' was the US and UK's biggest-selling single last year but was accused by many of promoting rape culture through its lyrics.

Guru-Murthy expressed that there was what could be construed as a "power dynamic" in the music video and that the partially nude women featured were there "to please" the men.

Pharrell responded that the female director of the video was inspired by high-fashion magazines and stated: "The only person that I really touched in a close way was a sheep."

During the interview, Pharrell also claimed that he'd "love" to see a woman run the US.

"What would that world be like? We do not know because we haven't given it a shot. We're too busy telling them what they can or can't do with their bodies," he speculated.

The 'Happy' singer revealed as well that he doesn't see himself as a feminist, admitting: "I've been asked, 'Am I a feminist?' I don't think it's possible for me to be that."

When Guru-Murthy responded that it's possible for men to be feminists, Pharrell said: "It makes sense up until a certain point," adding that he "[does] support feminists" and expressing that there are inequalities that need to be addressed.
