Pre-Fashion Week Catch-Up With Rachel Zoe

You probably know Rachel Zoe as revered Hollywood stylist, a reality TV star, and a relatively new mom, but you might not be as familiar with her role as a fashion designer and her eponymous collection of Ready to Wear that shows in New York. Since her first Fashion Week presentation for her Spring 2012 collection, Zoe's label has been a mainstay on the schedule, even graduating to a runway show that's proved to be one of the hottest tickets in town. Though she's known for her easy, bohemian glamour, Zoe has shown her range as a designer over the last couple of years, branching out into darker color palettes and edgier, more urban silhouettes. We caught up with the mogul for a few moments to get a glimpse into her life pre-Fashion Week, as well as an exclusive sketch from her upcoming Fall 2013 collection.

Is there anything in particular that inspired your collection this season?
Fall 2013 was inspired by the 1970s equestrian lifestyle. I wanted to incorporate the moody and romantic — intricate baroque detailing and classic menswear elements — with something tougher and edgier in a nod to London’s rock ‘n roll underground.

How long are your days on average during Fashion Week?
Let’s just say there aren’t enough hours in the day! It’s a constant challenge trying to find balance between styling, designing and being a mom.

Do you have a Fashion Week uniform?
I love Fall Fashion Week because it means lots of layering, long sweaters and vintage coats.

Could you give us a five song playlist that is characteristic of what Team Zoe will be listening to in the studio during Fashion Week prep?
I am a child of the '70s so I love classic rock — Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, and I also love Coldplay.

Do you have a Fashion Week “survival kit”? Name a few things that we could find in your bag at any given time during the shows.
I always carry a Tom Ford lipstick and Tachta face blotters to get me through the day. In my hotel, I also keep a supply of Skyn Iceland eye gels — they are a must, especially after little to no sleep.

What’s your go-to Starbucks order?
I stick to English Breakfast Tea.

What's it like having Skyler as the newest (and youngest) member of Team Zoe?
I don’t remember life without him — he is my everything! Skyler loves coming to work with me, and my team loves him even more.

Is there one model you dream of having walk in your show? How about celebrities you dream of sitting in your front row?
Lara Stone and Michelle Obama

The thing you look forward to most once Fashion Week is over is:
Sleep!
