How to Find a Career, Not Just a Job

Your Moment of Zen

Dear CC: How do you find a career, not just a job?

Not to go all self-help on you, but it really is true: If you can find something you love, you’ll probably be good at it - or at least work hard enough so you’ll eventually get good - and if you are good, someone will pay you for it. Yes, they’re likely to pay you more if you can crunch P/E ratios rather than perform a sublime grand jeté. It’s OK to try on a few things until you stumble upon what exactly your passion is. Or maybe you just end up working to get the paycheck and to stay off the streets, and your passion is your kids, your guitar, your weekly bowling game. It doesn’t make you a bad person. CC will never hire you, but you’re not a bad person.
