Dear CC: My boss continually comes to my office to shoot the breeze, distracting me from what I should be doing. How do I get rid of him?
Head him off at the pass. Get into his office bright and early every morning with an update, even if it's inconsequential: "Hey, chief, how was your weekend? And you know all those tasks that any numb-nuts could handle? Well, I'm handling them okeydokey." Some bosses just need the juice of constant information flow. A good trick is to drop to sotto voce and pass along a rumor about a rival company. The more sotto the voce, the more scintillating the news.
