Confessions of a Pink-Slip Princess: The Gym

I am now on a first-name basis with all the personal trainers at the 45th Street New York Health and Racquet Club. I’m proud to say that this is the very first year I have stuck to my New Year’s resolution of working out consistently. Turns out it’s easy, and almost comforting, to spend a couple hours at the gym every day when you’re not working. If I’m going to go broke and remain in career limbo indefinitely, at least I’ll be in kick-ass shape.

Sometimes I run so fast that I cannot see straight, and my heart feels like it’s going to explode.

I’ve become friends with a lovely woman named Joyce, who was my partner in a boxing class I took one afternoon. She recently lost her job, too. We both admit it’s easier to talk to people who are in the same boat as us. Even though we barely know one another, Joyce understands what I’m going through better than anybody else in my life right now. I find it both funny and sad that a stranger has become my confidante overnight. Joyce and I update each other about our respective job searches. She’s looking for something in finance, and I’m still trying to figure out what I want. I wonder which one of us is more doomed.
