Angelina Jolie is a woman of many talents: actress, mother, spokeswoman, activist, and most importantly today, humanitarian. The film academy announced today that the superwoman will be one of four recipients (alongside Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury, and Italian costume designer Piero Tosi) of an honorary Academy Award for her humanitarian work. Jolie, 38, is no stranger to the Oscars, having won for her supporting role in "Girl, Interrupted" (1999) and nominated for "Changeling" (2008). However, this is her first honorary Oscar, formally called the Hersholt Award which is given periodically. The actress currently serves as a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and has lobbied for programs to support women and children.

In May, Jolie wrote an op-ed in The New York Times discussing her decision to get a double-mastectomy earlier in the year, while also encouraging women to get checked for BRCA1, the faulty gene that she carries. We would like to extend our congratulations to Jolie for serving as an incredible role model for women!
