Native Artisans of Guatemala

If her home is checkered with trinkets from her worldly adventures (or even if it's not), she'll adore this cheerful pillow that evokes the nautical spirit of the coastal region where it's made. Named after the Cakchiquel-speaking Mayans who inhabit the San Antonio Palopó region of Guatemala, Raya is one of three cheerful, "ethnic modern" designs that come from Proud Mary, a collaborative project between New York designers and artisans in Guatemala. The artisans are paid double the usual Guatemalan wage to apply their traditional methods of weaving and printing to Proud Mary's smart accessories and home accents. (proudmary.org, $100)
