Our Ode to Hair Playlist
Our editor, Lauren Valenti, chooses her favorite tress-centric anthems.

Whether straight, curly, or frizzy; long, short, or lobbed; blonde, brunette, or red — hair is ripe with lyrical potential and it's no secret why. Our relationships with hair, be it our own or a stranger's we're admiring from a far, is complicated. Personally, I've always found my own mane to be both a blessing and a curse. Somedays it's the pièce de résistance of my look (see above!) and others I try to run a comb through and it's the bane of my existence.
There are many artists who have equally loaded relationships with their hair and channel it into their music. In "I Am Not My Hair," India Arie vows that despite the evolution of her own head of hair, she doesn't want to be defined by it. Then there's Lady Gaga who has always viewed her hair as a vehicle for freedom and eulogized about it in her Born This Way track, "Hair." "My hair was my glory," she said. "It was the only thing that I could change about myself."
And let us not forget 12-year-old Willow Smith, who prided herself on whipping her hair back and forth, only to shave it off as she approached her teenage years. Here, I've narrowed down 14 of my favorite odes to tresses or lack-there-of.
