Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi surprised the world on Friday with news of their private wedding in Windsor—and then they made us wait for the photos.
It's understood that the happy couple held off on sharing images from their special day so as not to overshadow Captain Tom Moore's investiture, which also took place in Windsor yesterday. But this evening, Buckingham Palace finally released two portraits of the newlyweds taken by photographer Benjamin Wheeler.
The first picture (above) shows the bride and groom leaving the church following the service at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at Royal Lodge. It offers the first glimpse of Beatrice's dress—a vintage gown by designer Norman Hartnell, which is on loan from the Queen.
Per Buckingham Palace: "The dress is made from Peau De Soie taffeta in shades of ivory, trimmed with ivory Duchess satin, with organza sleeves. It is encrusted with diamanté and has a geometric checkered bodice. It was remodelled and fitted by Miss Angela Kelly and Mr Stewart Parvin."
Queen Elizabeth previously wore the dress in 1962 to the premiere of Lawrence of Arabia at the Odeon theater in Leicester Square, and to a 1961 state dinner in Rome.
Beatrice paired the gown with the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, which Queen Elizabeth wore to marry Prince Philip on November 20, 1947. It was clearly very important for the couple that the Queen be able to attend the wedding. A source told Town & Country that the date was "planned around the Queen's schedule."
The British monarch and her consort appear in the second photo shared by Buckingham Palace today. The socially distanced portrait (above), highlights the lengths at which the couple worked to adhere to government guidelines put in place because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
