Everyone loves a comeback, especially when it comes gift-wrapped in millions of dollars. Robert Downey Jr., known more recently as Iron Man's Tony Stark, topped this year's Forbes list of Hollywood's Highest Paid Actors at $75 million for the year. With the third Iron Man installment released this May, the franchise has brought in a whopping $2.4 billion worldwide. RDJ also reprised his role as Iron Man in Marvel's The Avengers, which was released in 2012 and went on to become the third highest grossing film of all time. Though The Avengers was an ensemble cast — including Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, and Chris Hemsworth — Downey was paid more than any of his fellow co-stars, including director Joss Whedon.
It was just in 2005 when Downey almost didn't even get a screen test for Iron Man, with his last "hit" being in 1986's Back to School and his name synonymous with drugs and alcohol, instead of box-office dollars. A few blockbuster hits later, he's the highest paid actor in Hollywood, with People's 2012 Sexiest Man Alive, Channing Tatum, trailing a close second at $60 million.
