Following a visit to Madagascar for UNICEF earlier this year, Katy Perry was named the organization's newest Goodwill Ambassador.

"Katy Perry is already a champion for children, and we look forward to hearing her 'roar' on behalf of UNICEF," said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. "We are delighted that she is joining us as UNICEF's newest Goodwill Ambassador and lending her remarkable voice to amplify the voices of children and young people around the world."

At the event, the popstar said that her perspective on life changed after Madagascar, a trip that exposed her to people in one of the poorest countries of the world who lived with the simplest of means. It inspired her to write her latest song, "Unconditionally," that is charged with the sentimentality of the star's emotional experience.

Later that evening, Perry dazzled on the red carpet at the 9th annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
