SPF Advice

I can never keep all the SPF advice straight in my head. I don't believe that a higher SPF is -always- better. Is it?

Hi girls........ I have oily skin and the best option for me is the oil free sunscreen. We have great options out there and you should try to find one that is good for you (Coppertone, whatever). I wear it everyday (45 or more) because I am afraid to get dark spots on my face (because of pigmentation from waxing or zits). I know that it won't happen now, but if you go out a lot on the sun, it will some day. High protection factor is necessary to have a healthy skin for your life.

I prefer clouds to sun, or, if I do go outside on a sunny day, it's under a tree or in some other shade giving thing. I bet I lack vitamin c in my body...

With Spring just around the corner, I thought I'd post a reminder and links to help assist you in researching any questions regarding skin cancer and SPF advice.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Every 67 minutes, someone dies from skin cancer. With early detection, most of these deaths can be prevented.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. To help bring extra awareness to this deadly serious cancer, Olay and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) have teamed together and invite you and a friend to get a free skin cancer screening.

Friendship is a powerful tool. Friends listen to friends when they won't listen to anyone else. You can make a difference in the lives of those you care about most. Are you willing to get involved to help protect them and yourself?

We invite you to take the first step by learning more, attending a free screening and always wearing SPF protection.

It doesn't matter what time of year it is, or what type of day it is, ALWAYS use sunscreen. Yes, always having an high SPF is important. Applying sunscreen is one of the most important ways to maintain youthful skin! The more protection the better.

:-) OK LADIES!!! The SPF # tells you how long you can stay in the sun before you begin to burn. FIRST: always apply a minimum of 20 minutes before leaving house (it takes that long to start working!!) 2nd: reapply and wear it every day of the year = 365, no exceptions. For those of you experiencing breakouts try Nuetrogina Dry Touch. Non comedegenic, fragrance free, etc. ***** It must have in it either Helioplex or Parsol 1789 to really protect. Any tan is a sign of sun damage and it is cumulative, meaning it adds up through the years and bingo, out pops sign cancer. Maybe you don't realize, but skin is our largest organ!! Put it everywhere, behind your ears and on ears, on back and front of shoulders, because the sun will sneak thru whatever we're wearing. OH! Almost forgot!! Sunblock MUST GO ON FIRST, next to naked skin!!!, then wait 20 min and apply any other primers, makeups (which should have SPF's in them as well. My latest find was Neutrogina with Helioplex spf 70. I'm very happy, but I'd never go below 30-45 as a matter of course. Hope this info helps y'all. We know what we're doing out here in Tucson, AZ, not trying to brag, nope it's darn hot!!!

Same here. That's why I opt to not go outside as much as I can when it's Super Sunny out :!:

Marie is correct, Liv. A higher sunscreen (the FDA has outlawed the use of the word "sunblock" on such products) is always safer. In the battle between healthy skin and a better tan, healthy skin should always win.

My idea was maybe the higher, the more chemicals. So I use the higher ones only when I will expose to sun a LOT, such as going to the beach.

I don't know if my idea is right. But if the higher, the better, why not just produce the highest ones and what's the usage for the lower ones?

 Nobody wants a sunburn/skin cancer! The higher the SPF, the better babe. Especially if you know your going to be outside for more than an hour, protect your skin.
