In case the Backstreet Boys' performance at Tuesday night's Balmain x H&M launch didn't tip you off, pop culture is having a love affair with '90s and early-aughts revivals—especially in the world of TV.
With The X Files slated for January, Twin Peaks coming in 2016, and Gilmore Girls not far behind, it's not surprising to hear that NBC wants to reboot the best movie of all time, AKA Cruel Intentions. The classic teen film stars Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon and is a '90s masterpiece complete with drug-laced rosaries, weird sibling romance and—most importantly—documentation of Phillippe and Witherspoon's real-life relationship.
TV Line reports that NBC's series would revolve around Bash Casey, the son of Sebastian (Phillippe) and Annette (Witherspoon) who moves to San Francisco to get in touch with his roots after finding his dad's journals.
Um what? This alternate universe implies that Sebastian got Annette pregnant before he died (past the spoiler statute of limitations, not sorry), and doesn't even touch on how Sarah Michelle Gellar's incest-happy character might fit in. A Sebastian/Annette love child sounds promising, but without the core cast's involvement, will the original genius of Cruel Intensions be lost in our constant quest to relive '90s nostalgia? *chants "Don't f*ck this up," "Don't f*ck this up"*
