Big Girl in a Skinny World at Fashion Week: Badgley Mischka

Hello Ladies,
As if the blizzard that kicked off New York Fashion Week wasn’t enough, the weather in the city yesterday was atrocious. I left the apartment early this morning in a downpour of wet, blowing snow. Needless to say, the traffic was awful and I literally sprinted up the steps at Bryant Park. I ran into the tent right as the lights turned on and music started blaring for the Badgley Mischka show.

I’ve always been a fan of Mark Badgley and James Mischka, especially because they are two of the kindest individuals I have ever met. Surprisingly enough, I met the pair when they were in Miami an few years ago to show their collection. I was a fresh-faced 17-year-old armed with tons of questions and no particular assignment. I was interning at a local Miami magazine and was able to weasel my way into Mercedes-Benz Swim Fashion Week. I decided to stand in line with all of the other reporters, including one from WWD (in other words, a serious journalist), and waited eagerly to ask my questions. Well, I may have been out of my element, but it didn’t matter: Mark and James were so gracious and attentively answered all of my questions. They even indulged me in a photo op!

And so, four years later, I found myself in the presence of these masters again, as they showed a couple of collections. The first collection was the notable Badgely Mischka. It was a 15-piece collection of what the pair does best: stunning evening wear. The most breathtaking in my opinion was the last look, a floor-length cream gown that can be most accurately described as a walking art installation. The second collection was Mark and James. The models wore puffed up pompadour hairstyles. The overall aesthetic of the show was very much in line with my personal style: a Mark and James take on classic edge. It was a sophisticated and refined edginess that was comprised of an almost all black and grey palette. The best thing about seeing this collection was knowing that the brand makes some gorgeous plus size gowns and some ultra glam accessories.

I’ve got more shows coming up today, so check back soon for updates!
