Big Girl in a Skinny World: Can Curvy Women Wear Skinny Jeans?

Hello Ladies:

Hello Again! I just want to say to all my readers—you are remarkable! I mean, really, the volume of emails I have received is mind-boggling. And while I have been insanely busy, as I am sure you can all imagine, I have tried to make a dent in my inbox. In an effort to get back all of you, which I fully intend to do, I will be answering readers questions once a week.

Many of you had questions, denim questions in particular. Debby from Gresham, Oregon wanted to know about skinny jeans. “I am a size 12. Do you think I could pull off the skinny jean look? What should I watch out for?”

Well, I for one am obsessed with skinny jeans, and while I am a huge advocate of the most figure flattering items, I think everyone is entitled to indulge in a few trendy items. But beware, Debby: rules can be broken only when they are broken correctly. I think you can absolutely “pull off” skinnies. Here is the trick: wear them in a dark wash, and make sure the fit is spot on. I tend to pair them with slightly billowy tops that have a defined waistline, or I add a belt to ones that don’t. Another way to wear them is with a tailored blazer and a simple top—to look like you have extra long legs, throw on a pair of great heels. Two pairs of skinny jeans I am currently obsessed with are Old Navy’s Sweetheart Ankle-Zip Jeans and Z. Cavaricci’s Jesse Skinny Leg Jeans. Hope this helps. Let me know how it works out!
