Vera Wang's Fall Show

vera Wang Fall ShowVera Wang Fall ShowFor Vera Wang, change is in the air - and I don't mean just the scaled-back show she staged at her Mercer Street boutique in SoHo Thursday morning. The designer's clothes, often eccentric in the past, were notably more subtle and sensuous this time around, sacrificing not one bit of her signature style as she channeled Peggy Guggenheim in Venice. The romance, the texture, the cut, the chunky jewelry...they were all there.

vera Wang Fall ShowAs look after look came out, one could sense the relief in both editors and retailers that here was a collection that every woman could wear. The broad range of offerings went well beyond a LBD to include viscose shirtdresses, and A-line shifts, most of which incorporated scuba fabric detailing and techno fabrics that both stretched and were lightweight. One of my favorites was a classic black scuba skirt. Broadtail was about the most fur Vera showed this season, sending out a tank in the fabric. Dresses were simple but offered sequins placed just so for a dazzling effect, and the one shock of color came in the form of a solid royal blue dress.

"We found it," Vera said of the scuba material. "We just found it." Mysterious: I love it.
