Mastering the Messy Top Knot

Mastering the Messy Top Knot

I've been wearing a lot of top knots lately. Between the hair-defying humidity and my tendency to oversleep after sipping rosé on some rooftop deck, they're the perfect summer solution — the ponytail's casual, sexier cousin, if you will. And while it's impossible to mess up a top knot—that's the whole point—Matt Fugate of Sally Hershberger shared his no-fuss tips to achieving summer's hottest bun. Bonus: This style works on wet or dry hair.

1. Flip head over and gather tresses into a ponytail on top of your head. Loosely secure with a band.

2. Spray ponytail with a leave-in conditioner for sun protection and texture, like Sally Hershberger's Hyper Hydration Super Keratin Spray ($10).

3. Wrap hair around the loose band and once you like the knot, secure with another band for a tight, yet undone look. For added fun, leave the end out in a fun point.

4. Double bonus: When you do take the knot out, you'll have perfect beachy waves.
