Fantasy Florals

"I'M A MAGPIE," says Erdem Moralioglu, the Montreal-born, British-Turkish designer who has been collecting sources of inspiration since childhood. Growing up, the 35-year-old traveled from the Tower of London to the markets in Istanbul with his mother, who read him art books instead of bedtime stories. Ask the Royal College of Art graduate (who cites Alber Elbaz as a tutor) what drives his creativity, and he says: "I love art, I love books, I love music, I love an old lady walking down the street." For resort, it was the idea of an escape, sparked by photos of his mother on holiday in Blackpool, England. "There is an element of 'undoneness,'" he says. Wide-leg pajama pants and a printed leather motorcycle jacket felt "sloppy and relaxed," a departure from the elegant cocktail dress that has been the line’s signature since its launch in 2005. "A lot of my work is reactionary," he says, "undoing things from a previous season." We hope he continues doing what he’s been undoing. —Jessica Minkoff
