Blues Traveler: Inspired by Derek Lam's subversive denim smoky eye, Day toned down the color for a more daytime look: "Blue eyeshadow is best worn in moderation. Try sweeping it across the lashline for a subtle hint of color," she says.

A parade of boldly colored lips strutted the Chanel runway last spring. Like the label itself, red lips are one of the few truly timeless beauty looks.

Simply Red: To get more mileage out of your crimson smile, Day suggests sticking with stains instead of lipstick. The stay-put formula lasts all day and offers more versatility. "If you're not comfortable going bold, a stain can also offer a sheer wash of color."

Violet Femme: Shimmering lilac takes the edge off a bright-orange eye, transforming the runway look from punk to pretty. Paired with icy purple, orange is surprisingly wearable, Day explains: "It's a universally flattering hue, but deeper skin tones can pull off the most vibrant shades."

Dior's fall look is all about the eyes. Shimmery gold tones — reminiscent of fall foliage — create a seductively elegant nighttime look.

Solid Gold: Used in moderation, metallics are more than just an option for evening. "A subtle sheen, like a wash of gold or copper shadow across the eyelid, is best for daytime," Day says. "An alternative is to use a metallic eyeliner just along the upper lashline."

Proenza Schouler
Rich autumnal hues ruled the runway at Proenza Schouler. Deep, darkly shaded lips were paired with perfect complexions to punctuate each look.

Maroon 5: When wearing a dark lip, the rest of the face needs to look flawless. "Concealer, foundation, and powder perfect the skin and provide a base for the lipstick," says Day, who recommends using a glossy-formula lipstick to keep the mouth moist and prevent the rich wine color from cracking or feathering into fine lines.
