Styling Tips for Long Hair

Okay, Rapunzel — let down that hair! Here are a variety of styles for your long locks.

Hairstyle Handbook

A super-moisturizing shampoo and conditioner hydrates in the shower so you can use fewer products afterwards.

Generously work a prep spray or style primer through damp hair, to bring out your hair's natural texture and allowing it to air-dry almost perfectly.

Use a little shine serum to fight frizzy ends — the tiniest bit will do the trick.

MARIE CLAIRE RECOMMENDS
PRIMER like Sally Hershberger Supreme Head Style Primer, $24.98.

MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO like Freeman Papaya Massive Moisture Shampoo, $3.59.

SHINE SERUM like L'Oréal Studio Line Glossing Cream, $4.61.

Show off beachy-blonde highlights with an easygoing, tousled look. A brightening shampoo to bring out your highlights, natural or otherwise, makes a huge difference. After towel-drying hair, spritz root to end with a salt spray to create natural, surfer-girl style.

Dab a little leave-in conditioner on the ends if they start to look fried or dry/dull.

MARIE CLAIRE RECOMMENDS
BLONDE SHAMPOO like John Frieda Sheer Blonde Shampoo, $6.49.

SURF SPRAY like Rebecca Bacon's Beach Bag Elixir, $25.

LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER like Warren Tricomi Pure Strength Leave-In Conditioner, $25.

First, consider a few layers. "The longest styles look even longer right after a good cut that adds movement even if it takes off half an inch," says NYC stylist Ted Gibson.

If you haven't gotten to the stylist yet, use a curling iron and roll two- to three-inch sections halfway up the barrel.

Spritz with hairspray and then pull the curls out so they turn into long, loose waves at the bottom. You'll get the same kind of bouncy look you'd get after a $200 haircut.

MARIE CLAIRE RECOMMENDS

CURLING IRON like T3 PRO EverTwirl Curling Iron, $70.

HAIRSPRAY like Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hair Spray, $19.95.

LONG HAIR SHAMPOO like L'Oréal Vive Pro Nutri Gloss Shampoo for Medium to Long Hair, $4.99.

Dry hair with a round brush. Then use a large curling iron and, alternating two-inch sections, roll hair around the barrel in one direction and then again in the other direction to create a ripple effect.

Once you're done, spritz everything with an aerosol shine spray.

Go movie-star glam — and start with unwashed hair. If it's looking a little greasy, grab some dry shampoo and use a sprinkle on your roots.

Spray the rest of your hair with styling spray and roll halfway up with hot rollers, the bigger the better. Then while they're still warm, spritz with hair spray. Take curlers out immediately.

Make a deep side part and shake hair out so curls loosen. A little mascara and you're good to go.

HAIRSPRAY like Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hair Spray, $19.50.

Curly hair lends itself nicely to a messy chignon.

Flip hair over and spritz with hairspray all over. This will give your hair a little extra grit and keep your chignon from wilting after an hour.

Rake hair up and back with your hands, pushing it forward at the roots to encourage lift, and secure ends in a twist at the nape of your neck. Keep sticking in bobby pins and pulling out pieces to loosen the style.

Then, mist the twist with a little shine spray. This shouldn't look perfect but fast/sexy/chic.

Then, dry hair on a low heat to maintain the shine. Don't use a brush, expect when you get to the pieces in the front to help shape the waves.

Mist everything with a little shine-boosting hairspray and pull out curls so they look varied and imperfect — a.k.a. natural.

Take a front section on either side and twist it back so it stays very loose in front.

Shorter layers give thick, coarse curls more volume. As long as you control the frizz, this style is the perfect way to work with your hair's natural height. Run a conditioner and moisturizing gel thorough wet hair.

Flip your head over and diffuse every curl-take breaks so you don't get light headed and fall over.

A strong bang is so chic — and achievable if you have naturally thick hair. A quick flat iron with a tiny, bang-friendly version keeps them in line daily.

This look is all about layering products. Start with unwashed hair and apply some dry shampoo to your roots.

Work a texture cream through your ends — just a tiny bit to get an undone appearance.

To add a little volume to the rest of your hair, go for a mousse and work it haphazardly into dry hair. This look should seem naturally windblown, not styled, so don't try to get textures perfect.

In the shower, go easy on the shampoo — the more natural oils left in your hair the better.

Steer clear of vigorously towel-drying and instead, blot hair so your bathroom floor doesn't end up covered in water.

Then cocktail equal parts gel and leave-in conditioner and coat damp hair in the mixture. Carefully and lightly scrunch hair (stopping a few inches below the root, so you get the top to lie flat). Air-dry, and keep your hands off since touching your hair creates frizz.

First thing's first: Get shiny sideswept bangs. Run a styling cream through and dry immediately, making sure you pull the brush down and to the side as you go, training the bangs to stay put.

Comb an anti-frizz through your hair (use a brush to make sure you really distribute the product).

Blow-dry sections in back with a round brush to smooth out the look. Then, dry the front pieces by combing them through with your fingers so you get that great, sexy wave.

Getting a sexy tousled look with fine hair is a little more work, but definitely doable. Wash hair with a volumizing shampoo — skimp on the conditioner since you want healthy hair but don't want to weigh it down.

Spray volumizer all over and blow-dry hair fast and furious without a comb or brush, just shaking your fingers through to rough up the texture.

Once it's absolutely dry, use a bit of dry shampoo to ramp up the bedhead-y texture.

This updated Veronica Lake-ish style gives you wave and shine without looking overworked. Run a styling cream through your hair and blow-dry straight. Take a tiny dab of product and smooth it over dry hair to fight frizz.

Then, take four medium Velcro rollers and set two one-inch sections on either side of your part (in front).

Spray with aerosol hairspray-a pump spray won't evenly distribute product-and allow to set for at least 10 minutes. Blast with a little hot air from a dryer before removing rollers.

MARIE CLAIRE RECOMMENDS
VELCRO ROLLERS like Roller 3" Super Size Plus, $3.49.

Getting the right combo of straight and wavy textures is easy if you have the right cut. "A few layers throughout makes styling so much easier," says NYC stylist Ted Gibson.

Use a volumizing spray all over. "People always think of volume at the top, you want it in the back and on the sides as well," says Gibson.

Run some serum through bangs and blow-dry but don't flat iron them — it'll make the look too severe compared to the rest of your wavy-ish texture.

MARIE CLAIRE RECOMMENDS
WAVY HAIR SPRAY like Frédéric Fekkai Tousled Wave Spray, $23.

Naturally straight hair looks gorgeous with long layers and not a lot of fuss. Before you dry, mist on some thickening spray to create volume and a fortifying spray to prevent split ends. A deep part elevates a simple, straight cut. Use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner that won't weigh down your hair. Thick, textured hair becomes much easier to style when you have a great cut with long layers. Prep your hair with leave-in conditioner and straightening cream. Divide it into sections and pin up the top pieces to keep them out of the way. To get more body, mist volumizing spray at the roots of your straight, fine hair. Flip your head and blowdry, using your fingers to create lift near your scalp. Really long hair looks beautiful when it's smooth, shiny and healthy. Always use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for long styles. To make your curly hair look more polished, let it air-dry and then smooth out strategic sections. Start by misting a glossing spray all over. With a curling iron, flatten any cowlicks around your face and curl a few front pieces to create more dramatic ringlets. Spray hairspray on your fingers and carefully run your hands over the curls to de-frizz them without breaking them up.
