Splurge vs Steal: Beauty

How the pros spend and scrimp on their own skin-care and makeup routines -- plus, smart beauty secrets you can use.

Spend On
High-end antiagers. NYC dermatologist Debra Jaliman, M.D., splurges on treatments like Retinol- or vitamin C-infused creams or serums. The more expensive ones often have a higher concentration of the active ingredient, which should be one of the top three or four listed on the label. "If not, it's a drop in the ocean," she says. One to try: H2O+ Line Defense Eye Complex, $32.

Microdermabrasion. Anita Cela, M.D., a dermatologist in private practice in NYC, loves microdermabrasion (a process of exfoliating the skin with super-fine aluminum-oxide or sodium-bicarbonate crystals) for evening out skin tone and getting rid of rough spots. Average price: $200.

Massages. "If I had to choose between a massage and a facial, I'd pick the massage," says NYC dermatologist Lisa Airan, M.D. "They're more relaxing than facials, and when you're relaxed, your skin glows." Average price: $75.

Unique fragrances. "People spend more on special-occasion scents," says NYC fragrance consultant Ann Gottlieb. You may spray them onto your skin less frequently, but they'll make a greater impact on those around you. Try Yves Saint Laurent's Nu Eau de Toilette, $78, a seductive blend of bergamot, jasmine absolute and musk.

Moisturizers
"A simple moisturizer shouldn't cost a lot," says L.A. dermatologist Debra Luftman, M.D. Her pick -- Olay Complete UV Defense Moisture Cream, $6.69 (left) -- has a built-in sunscreen, which means one less thing to apply.

Body lotions. "I like a lotion that exfoliates and moisturizes," says Dr. Luftman, who recommends AmLactin 12% Lotion, $13.99. It contains 12-percent lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that softens skin as it hydrates.

Razors. "When it comes to my legs, anything will do," says Viotto, who points out that, unlike the bikini area, legs have a more even surface that's less prone to nicks, making an inexpensive razor, like Gillette Daisy, $5.99 for 10, a suitable choice.
