Few things are as annoying as a winter cold. Instead of reaching for the cough drops and syrups lining drugstore shelves, Dr. Roxanne Sukol, a preventive medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic, suggests any variety of tea with honey, up to three cups a day. Many OTC cough suppressants can make you sleepy, she says, and popping sugary cough drops is like eating candy. Besides, she adds, staying hydrated is key, since a dry throat exacerbates a cough.
