Long known for their UTI-fighting properties, cranberries also defend eaters from cavities and gastric ulcers - but how? A recent issue of Phytomedicine reports that cranberries seem to possess an "antidocking" mechanism that keeps bacteria at bay. To reap the benefits - and up the taste quotient - there's no need to settle for the canned goop. Suvir Saran, chef at NYC's Devi restaurant, mixes the fresh or frozen variety with the dried kind, then adds chopped apples, oranges, pineapple, cherries, pecans, and a little sugar to taste.
