Heroism 0, Wind Chill 19

Heroism 0, Wind Chill 19

There are a lot of insane people in New York at 6 a.m. Especially ones who run. Outdoors. When the wind chill is in the teens. This morning, I was one of them.

I don’t like mornings, and I need a nearly burning hot shower to shake the cold when I come back in. But it’s the off season for triathlon, and I’m doing what I can to keep base training (long, slow distance, lots of focus on technique) interesting. This year, that meant joining a running class that happens to meet at ungodly hours of the day.

This morning, the coldest yet, I was feeling a little heroic about being out there instead of giving my covers some company. Until I saw a bunch of people who were coming BACK from their runs. And I realized that not only was I not really heroic—I was actually kind of a slacker (they were d-o-n-e!). It’s not going to make me set my alarm any earlier, but it will definitely pre-empt any complaining when it goes off next time.
