Remember the days of lunch boxes and Trapper Keepers, when varsity jackets ruled the school and you would have done anything to snag a super-cute cheerleader uniform? Oh, that's just Glee? Well, regardless, chances are you either were a cheerleader in your youth or you were intimately familiar with the sport and its pom-poms. However, it might be time for a reality check for the 3.6 million cheerleaders of today.
According to a recent study in the Journal of Pediatrics, the sport contributes to a seriously significant amount of permanent, disability-causing injuries in females: 66-percent for high school students and 70-percent for female college athletes. And as The Telegraph indicated, these cheerleading injuries rose from roughly 5,000 in 1980 to 26,000 in 2007. Perhaps we got out of that sport at the right time.
