Have you guys ever heard of "dogging" — having sex in public, sometimes with partners you have just met online, so that others can watch?

I hadn't, until I read this New York Times article, all about the "sport" — and about a little town called Puttenham, an hour outside of London, that holds the questionable distinction of being "the No. 2 dogging site in Europe," according to some site that is apparently keeping track of such matters.

Public sex is "a popular — and quasi-legal — activity in Britain, according to the authorities and to the large number of Websites that promote it," The Times notes. "It is treated as a crime only if someone witnesses it, is offended, and is willing to make a formal complaint."

But the people of Puttenham have become distressed by all the sexual activity on display in their otherwise quiet town. "So popular is the woodsy field below the ridge as a spot for gay sex (mostly during the day) and heterosexual sex (mostly at night) that the police have designated it a 'public sex environment,'" The Times reports. "Meanwhile, frazzled residents trade tales of woe: The half-dressed men who materialize from the shrubbery and theatrically pretend to be foraging for nuts and berries. ... The occasion when an unsuspecting motorist went for a bathroom break in the bushes, only to be surrounded by a crowd of eager men. 'It was the quickest pee he'd ever done in his life,' [one town resident] said."

I find this all pretty hilarious and rather harmless. But man, I would never ever want to do it — as in, to have sex in public!

And I can sort of understand — as a person who is very curious about the intimate details of other people's lives — why one might want to watch other average Joe's and Jane's having sex... Wondering How do THEY do it? How is their doing it different from how I do it? That kind of thing. But out of a sense of propriety, I would never ever actually watch a bunch of strangers getting it on! I'd turn my head and walk away.

Is this kind of thing crazy, whether you're participating or just being a voyeur? Is it no big deal? Would you do either one?
