I recently had the good fortune to go to a screening of I Love You Phillip Morris, a new romantic comedy with a dark sense of humor. (It opened in New York and California over the weekend and goes nationwide this Friday.) Title notwithstanding, it's got nothing to do with cigarettes — just a lot to do with love, and the lengths we'll go to to get it or keep it. The romance at the heart of the flick begins in the most unlikely of places: In the library of a prison. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor star as convicts who fall in love while they're incarcerated — and Carrey's character, a con man with a special talent for escaping prison and fooling the Texas judicial system, will stop at nothing to make sure they end up free to live happily ever after.
Folks, I wonder: What's the strangest place where you've ever found love? Or what's the craziest thing you've ever done in the hopes of holding on to it?
I fell for a dude after we met in the tiny bookstore in D.C. where he worked. I was looking at a book of poetry by another Phillip, Phillip Levine, and when I brought it up to the counter, we got to talking about our favorite living poets and … we eventually had a little love affair that is at the top of my list of Fondly Remembered Romances. Other than that, though, the settings are pretty standard: Bars, cafes, and parties. (And it's not like a bookstore is even that weird.)
As for crazy things I've done for love ... truth be told, I can't think of anything that would honestly qualify. Unless risking my life by taking the Chinatown bus back and forth between Boston and New York a few times counts. (I don't think it does.) But I bet you guys have some good stories for me.
Anyway, I loved the movie — it's fast-paced, hilarious, touching, and smart. A good date movie that will leave you with plenty to talk about.
