10 Qualities a Guy Looks for When You First Meet Him

I polled a variety of men on what qualities they look for when they first meet a woman. Here are the goods.

Playfulness
Even if a guy is interested in getting serious with a woman it does not mean he wants to be with a serious woman. Display your sense of humor; if a guy hears a good joke or sees that you get his he'll get seriously turned on.

Sharp Intellect
A little bit of wit and sass is incredibly charming. Guys don't want someone who will just defer to them all the time; they want to be with someone who can hold their own and is brilliant. You don't have to hold multiple PhDs, just display an excellent intellect; it's also okay to brag about how quickly you crush the Saturday New York Times crossword each week.

Down-to-Earth
At the same time, you don't need to constantly brag about how amazing you are. Show, don't tell. Particularly if you're incredible in every way, a bit of humility will go far in impressing the guy you're with.

Fun
Guys want to see a woman who knows how to have fun. If you're out at a bar, it can be showing off your dance moves or picking a silly arcade game to trounce him in, but no matter how you show it off, show that you know how to have a good time.

Compassion
We want to see that you're not self-involved, sure, but we also want to see that you're passionate about something that benefits others. If you strive to leave a positive mark on the world, don't hide it! Compassion is sexy.

Flirtatious
Flirt a little bit, but not so much that you come off desperate. Men like women with high standards. A little bit of touching of the shoulders or arms goes much farther than grabbing his phone and entering in your number.

Well-rounded
We need to know that you're not the type of woman who just exists within a relationship and make it your whole life (codependency = bad). Show off how you've traveled the world, your active social life, and that you love your job. We all want to date people who seem fully formed and well-rounded.

Authenticity
While it's definitely hard to do when you first meet someone, guys like it when you just be yourself, authentically, and not hide any aspect of yourself. In that vein, it's always a good idea to be open and honest about what you want in life and in relationships.

Ambitious
You know what you want and that's hot. While you're laid back in the dating world, you're a beast in the boardroom. You have big goals and we get that; it's nice to know. A man wants to see that you have goals other than getting married.

Supportive
You don't need to look a guy in the eye on the first date and say, “I'll be there for you,” but if he's talking about how he lost his dad last year a simple hand squeeze and a sympathetic face will make him swoon. Men want women who they can trust will be there for them, no matter what.

Confidence
The number one thing men look for in the women they meet? Confidence. This means confidence in who you are and how you look, confidence in where you're going in life and how you move. All of it. The more confidence you exude, the more confident a man will be in his decision to date you long term.
