Behind the Design - Peter Som Video
Behind the Scenes & Interview with Peter Som
Hi. I'm Nina Sterghiou from Marie Claire. And I'm here today with the talented designer Peter Som. So, tell me, what was the inspiration behind your fall collection?
It was really for me about a strong silhouette and then I started sketching and I really wanted to kind of give my woman their sense of power but still maintain her feminine.
So take me through the greater process, how does that all start? What's the starting point for you?
Well, the starting part is actually the most fun. If you're living in New York, you'll go to galleries, I go to museums, that's really about all those images coming together. For me, I'm a sketcher. It's really what happens when pen meets paper.
And so, as a designer, how has wool change for you over the year?
Well, for me, wool has become the most versatile fabric I can think of. It can be the softest tissue weight wool or you can make a flowing dress.
Do you have a childhood memory of a favorite wool sweater or something like that?
I do. Actually, it was this little Rough Rider sweater. Wool is so far from that little crappy sweater that I wore as a kid. I've used wool since day one for this particular collection, it was really about, you know, I really thought [unknown] kind of quality that it stands out to silhouette that I wanted.
But if you weren't a designer, what would you be?
I would probably be a chef of some sort. I love cooking. I mean, to me it's similar to making a collection.
All the element is coming together.
All the elements have to come together.
