MC@Play with Nelly Furtado Video
The Spirit Indestructible singer reveals why she took so much time on her latest album and who would be her dream duet.
Hey, this is Nelly Furtado, and you're watching MarieClaire.com. [unknown] is latest one, I think it's real combination of all my sounds all put on one record, and I think lyrically it's probably my-- one of my stronger albums. I've always had a really eclectic musical upbringing. When I was little, I played several different instruments, and I played in a jazz band, played in a country band, and I know freestyle, and then with my hip hop friends, I did it all. And so I tried to fuse all that [unknown] in music. I like any feeling of pressure or I like having to win people over. I like being in that place, and when I take a long time between records and I make totally hit records each time, it immediately gives me that edge in my mind where I have to win again. It gives me-- it gives me that fighter's edge and that sort of competitive thrill. I do an okay Shakira impression. Underneath your clothes there's an endless story. There's a man I chose, there's no territory. I can't go to bed unless I've taken my vitamins. The roadrunner, beep beep. My mother was like my [unknown] growing up, cause she'd always like get together on Sunday morning for church. And she had staples, she had pieces. She had like the olive wool coat, the black leather skirt, the hot boots. You know, she just kind of pulled it together. When I'm traveling, I like to go into the tourist stores, and then I'd go into the tourist stores and I'd buy really corny things like shot glasses that say, you know, Venezuela or something, or like traditional things that I might never wear, or you know, the other day I was-- I found like a headband I bought with like little dolls on it, you know. You know what I was really excited about and who I still want to work with. Actually at one point, we were rapping about starting a band together is Robyn. Robyn from Sweden. Robyn and I, we've never met before and just through a friend, we have a mutual friend, and we were talking about yeah! We could do a band. And anyway, hopefully we'll collaborate at some point. I mean, God, I love her. I'd prize you a Brandy song: I wanna be down with what you're going through, I wanna be down. Why are you making me do this?
