Hi, I'm Tim Gunn and I'm honored to be here with you to talk about my new book, Gunn's Golden Rules. There's a great story in the book having to do with the fabulous, unparalleled Diane von Furstenberg who's a dear pal. She and I were judging a Gen Art Fresh Faces of Fashion competition. Diane turned to me at one point and she said, "Why is there no food at these events? They booze you up and then they never give you any food. I need a hotdog." And I thought, "Is this some kind of metaphor? I hope not because, don't look at me, Diane," then she proceeded to walk over to talk to the driver of her bottle green Bentley and tell him that we were going off to find a hotdog. On the corner of 34th and 8th Avenue, at the Tick Tock Diner, I knew there would be a hotdog so Diane and I entered the diner, she calls out, "I need a hotdog! Someone bring me a hotdog," and I said, "Diane, someone will come and help us, someone will bring us a menu," "I don't need a menu, I need a hotdog." The lesson here is that if you're going to walk into a diner and declare "I need a hotdog," you better be Diane von Furstenberg. I share a lot of very personal stories in this book and I have to absolutely come clean about why. I had a 15-year-old boy come up to me and talk to me about how I helped him come out. I'm welling up as I say this. I was just so deeply touched by that and the fact that he would talk to me about it and I thought, people share these things with me, I have a responsibility to share things about me with them.
