Marie Claire Throws a Party for Globetrotters

An eclectic crowd of high-profile journalists and activists joined Marie Claire and Overseas Press Club for lunch last week, here in the Hearst Tower. The topic of the luncheon was covering women's news abroad, and the guest of honor was Valerie Amos, the United Nations undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs. She spoke passionately about her hectic job: handling earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, and political blowups around the world. (And you thought you were busy.)

Maire Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles hosted the event, along with Overseas Press Club president David Andelman. Guests included Christy Turlington Burns (pictured), founder of Every Mother Counts; Paul Steiger, president of the Pulitzer-winning news service Propublica; Zainab Salbi, president of Women for Women International; Kristin Whiting (pictured), senior producer for 48 Hours on CBS News; and Ellen Levine, editorial director of Hearst Magazines.

Attending from the Overseas Press Club were Andelman and former president Allan Dodds Frank, as well as executive director Sonya Fry and board member Abigail Pesta, who is also Marie Claire's editor-at-large. Also joining Coles and Pesta from Maire Claire was executive editor Anne Fulenwider. Mark Taylor joined from the UN, and Kat Stoeffel came from the New York Observer.
