The Ultimate Mother's Day Gift: Build a House

Builders participating in Women Build Week 2009 for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity

As Habitat for Humanity kicks off its annual Women Build Week on May 1st, tap into your DIY side. In honor of Mother’s Day, over 200 Habitat for Humanity locations across the country will arrange building days where women with no prior experience will come together to build a house for a low-income working family. Women Build, an offshoot volunteer program of Habitat, has built more than 1,400 houses to date in an effort to expand affordable homeownership and allows women to flex their construction skills in a traditionally male-dominated field. Currently, more than 12 million children live in poverty housing in the United States and you can help change that. Marjorie McCormick, an AmeriCorps volunteer with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity in South Carolina, says, “Having the opportunity to build someone’s future home is a rewarding challenge and a great workout.” While Women Build holds events year-round, find a building site in your area to take part in this unique effort. And if you can’t donate your time, you can also donate money to the cause.
