After her now-infamous remarks last week that Israel should "get the hell out of Palestine" and that Jews should "go home" to Germany, Poland, or the United States, veteran reporter Helen Thomas announced her not-so-early retirement earlier today. Thomas's comments were captured on video last week and circulated quickly via YouTube, and the White House called them "offensive and reprehensible." It's an unfortunate ending to an illustrious, remarkable career 89-year-old Thomas reported for United Press International for 57 years and worked as a columnist for Hearst Newspapers for the last decade. She covered the White House for nearly 50 years.
Thomas apologized via her Website, saying: "I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heartfelt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon."
Were sorry to see Helen join our list of Women We Wish Were Better at Their Jobs, but we hope her retirement gives her the rest and reflection she clearly needs to get her wits back together.
