Bill Cosby is suing seven of the women who have accused him of sexual assault, saying they made up their stories to ruin his reputation and make money for themselves. The Huffington Post reports that the lawsuit is a response to these women's initial lawsuit against him, making this case even messier than it was before.
Cosby is suing Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis, and Angela Leslie, all of whom are plaintiffs in their own defamation suit against the comedian. Cosby's lawyer, Monique Pressley, released a statement condemning what she calls their "malicious, opportunistic, and false and defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against him." He is suing them for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Back in December 2014, three of these women sued him for defamation, saying he falsely branded them as liars for telling their stories. The remaining four women joined the suit last month.
"Mr. Cosby states plainly that he neither drugged nor sexually assaulted the defendants and that each defendant has maliciously and knowingly published multiple false statements and accusations," the statement reads, "in an effort to cause damage to Mr. Cosby's reputation and to extract financial gains."Cosby is asking for compensatory and punitive damages and a ruling to make the defendants publicly retract and correct their accusations against him.
Earlier today, Boston University became the latest of dozens of universities to rescind Cosby's honorary degree. Read Pressley's full statement below:
