The new trailer for Emma Watson's upcoming thrillerThe Circle has landed, and it's pretty much a plot synopsis in video form, just FYI for those spoiler-phobes who haven't read Dave Eggers' 2013 novel.
The trailer begins with Watson's college grad Mae being hired for a sought-after position at The Circle, Silicon Valley's most powerful and elite tech company. Its seemingly benevolent CEO (Tom Hanks) delivers rousing speeches about "the perfectibility of human beings", while claiming the power to cure any disease, end hunger, and overhaul human rights worldwide.
That first part turns out to be especially relevant to Mae, whose father suffers from multiple sclerosis–and she's startled to discover that her new employer is more than happy to use its extraordinary technology to help her family. But there's a price to pay, as becomes clear from the increasingly ominous shots of Mae looking scared, walking down creepy corridors and ultimately being confronted by Hanks' maybe not-so-benevolent Eamon Bailey.
Patton Oswalt, Star Wars' John Boyega and Boyhood's Ellar Coltrane are among the supporting cast, while Bill Paxton plays Mae's father. The Circle will be released in theaters on April 28.
