Cardi B made an important statement this weekend—she will not perform during any Super Bowl halftime shows unless Colin Kaepernick is hired again. TMZ reported that Cardi B made the revelation at the Maxim Party in Minneapolis on Saturday night.
Kaepernick became international news in 2016 when he refused to stand during the national anthem at a preseason game. At the time, Kaepernick was playing for the San Francisco 49ers, and told NFL Media:
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
As a result of his political stance, Kaepernick believed that he was blackballed by the NFL, as he was unable to secure a team for the 2017 season, and remains a free agent.
TMZ has video footage of Cardi B being asked when she would be performing at the Super Bowl, to which she responded that it wouldn't happen until Kaepernick was hired again.
Cardi B isn't the only celebrity to show her support for Kaepernick. Just this weekend, film director Ava DuVernay posted a photo with the football player on social media, along with the caption "#ImWithKap."
