Joan Rivers Was Left Out of the Oscars "In Memoriam" Tribute

Even though the late comedian practically invented red carpet coverage.

What the hell? The iconic comedian, who died last year, was a fixture on the red carpet, interviewing celebrities and skewering their style at the same time. But when it came time to mourn Hollywood's royalty, the Academy didn't think to include her.

Rivers wasn't primarily known for her work in movies, though she did direct Billy Crystal in his first starring role. However, she was known for redefining the Oscars telecast as we know it with her hilarious red-carpet fashion recaps. But she was left out of their "in memoriam" segment, which paid tribute to actors like Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney. Rivers was also snubbed during the Grammys' annual "in memoriam" segment, even though she won a posthumous award that very day.

Another high-profile omission during the Oscars segment was actress Elaine Stritch, better known for her work on Broadway, but still a painful loss for Hollywood. And author Gabriel Garcia Marquez made the list, despite being known mainly for his novels.

Rivers' fans and colleagues lashed out about the omission on Twitter:
