Congratulations are due for Malia Obama, who somehow managed to go through high school with the world's most protective parents. (Can you imagine dealing with Secret Service at the same time as boy drama and SAT prep?) The Washington Post reports that Malia graduated high school Friday.
Of course, Mom and Dad were there, but they tried to blend in like normal parents. "[President Obama] was just a total dad," the mother of a graduating senior told the newspaper. "No fanfare. You didn't know they were there." He had previously told a group in Detroit that he planned on wearing dark glasses to hide his proud-papa tears, and he gave Malia a standing ovation when she walked across the stage. According to CNN, he declined an offer to speak at the graduation because he worried he'd be too emotional. (Aww.)
There have been no officially authorized photos from Malia's big day yet, but here's a zoomed out shot of the entire Sidwell Friends graduating class. If you squint, you can kind of see Malia in the middle. I think.
Malia's graduation is a reminder that we're all getting old. Just as a reference, here's Malia with sister Sasha (who just turned 15) at her dad's first inauguration in 2009:
And here's Malia at a state dinner this March, looking sophisticated and mature:
Now that she has her diploma, Malia is taking a gap year before enrolling at Harvard. And if she's anything like her parents, she'll be accomplishing big things after that.
