We love fan theories and alternate endings, even if they are a bit dark and deep and mess with your brain. How else would we have learnt about the incredible Three Brothers Harry Potter idea? Or the original and very depressing end to Pretty Woman?

But despite all that, this Friends fan theory about the alternate ending the last episode should have had, is a whole other level of 'WTF that is so dark and sad I may never see the show the same way again'.

All we can do is warn you that you should probably have someone you can hug close by, because you will definitely need to feel the warmth of another human and believe in love and happiness again after this.

SO, as you'll remember, the final ever episode ends with the group all leaving Monica and Chandler's apartment for the last time for one last coffee, before they move to the suburbs with their twin babies and everyone continues on in their happy lives together.

But one Twitter user has revealed their thoughts about the REAL ending to the show and while it's pretty damn disturbing and sad, it's also absolutely brilliant. In his mind, it turns out that Phoebe is actually still homeless and the whole plot of Friends is a drug-fuelled fantasy she has had, staring at a bunch of strangers in Central Perk. Prepare yourselves...

Um. Cool. Hug anyone?

While we'll never quite be able to look at Pheebs in the same way again after all of that, co-creator of the show Marta Kauffman has spoken out on the whole thing and reassured us all that we can forget the whole, twisted idea ever even happened.

Speaking to ET Online at the 2017 ATX Television Festival, Marta said: "That's the saddest thing I've ever heard!"

Having heard a whole lot of Friends theories in her time, she went on to say that it's by far the most unsettling one yet. "No, I never heard that - that's a terrible theory. That's insane!" she revealed. "That's, like, that's like crazy alt-television theory. Wow!"

"I'm fascinated," she added. "I just think that someone needs a life. Someone needs a life, that's all I'm saying."

And by a life, we're hoping she means watching the Friends box set for the 25th time all over again every Sunday afternoon while quoting the entire show word for word. Right? Right.
