"I want to start off by saying, I failed at pursuing my dream," Ally Love says on the latest episode of Marie Claire's "Nice Talk" podcast.

Peloton users probably know Love as one of the platform's fan-favorite fitness instructors—she's also the VP of Instructor Strategy and Development for the company. New Yorkers might recognize her from her former role as the in-arena host for the Brooklyn Nets. On top of that, she used to be a dancer for the New York Knicks.

None of that sounds much like failure. But it also wasn’t the dream Love originally imagined for herself.

"When you read off these resumes, sometimes it can make you—no matter where you are in your career—it can make you feel small, if you're listening," Love says, explaining why saying "I failed" is so important to her. "You're like, 'Well, I didn't do that. I wasn't the youngest to...' It starts to wear on you."

Love's dream from a young age was to become a professional dancer, but, as she puts it, she "ran into some roadblocks" along the way. For instance, during her freshman year in college, she was chosen for a scholarship to attend a program with Les Grandes Ballets. But a month before she was supposed to leave, she says someone from her school told her that they'd decided to send a student who was more "streamlined."

She explains: "And they sent someone who did not look like me. And then I later realized what 'streamlined' meant. It meant that I was not skinny enough to represent [the school]."

Looking back at how things shook out, Love sees the power in being able to seize new opportunities, even when they don’t line up exactly with the dream you started with.

"Sometimes those opportunities or those dreams that we have at any age—because we can dream at any age—they don't always manifest exactly the way we want them to," Love continues. "And so, when you're at the crossroad ... That's when you have to learn to pivot, and when you start to rely on other opportunity sets that you have."

Love leaned into the opportunities that came her way, even if she was often hesitant at first. She tried out for the Knicks after a friend suggested it, discovered her hosting skills when the Nets job came up, and followed that path to Peloton when the company expressed interest in having her teach classes.

She may not have had experience as a fitness instructor, but her musicality as a dancer and her ease as an arena host proved to be a natural combination.

"I can keep you engaged and activated. I got the gift of gab, and I know how to win a crowd. I know how to follow the camera," Love says. "So all of those things kind of met right at the intersection of Peloton and what Peloton was, and I end up getting the job. I've been there for 10 years, which is wild, and it has ultimately changed my entire life."

At this point, my denim drawer has become a big family reunion for sister brands Gap and Old Navy. I have the Old Navy jeans I wore nonstop in high school and my new Gap x Hailey Bieber denim. But which pair is currently my favorite child? The new curvy girl-friendly jeans that Cardi B modeled in Old Navy's new "Most Wanted Denim" campaign, starring Quenlin Blackwell, Paloma Elsesser, and more.

Old Navy won me over as early as sixth grade, when I finally found jeans that comfortably fit my premature curves. As an adult (and a fashion writer), I've sampled no shortage of designer denim brands, but I always end up coming home to wallet-friendly finds from the American label. There, jeans are trendy, stocked with a stellar size range (plus, regular, petite, and tall lengths), and easily accessible at my local mall. All that to say: I had high expectations for the latest celebrity-led collection.

Turns out, Cardi B and I have more in common than just our waist-to-hip ratios. According to the press release, the Grammy winner and Old Navy go way back, too: "I grew up shopping at Old Navy! I remember my mom would always get our 4th of July outfits from there, so being a part of the campaign felt like a full circle," she said, referring to the wide-leg, mid-rise, and barrel silhouettes showcased in the new campaign. "You can always walk in and find something cute, something for your body type, something that makes you feel good, and doesn't break the bank."

Cardi's style sold out within minutes of the initial launch on Aug. 6. When I found out there was a restock happening, on Aug. 13, I jumped at the opportunity to try them out.

The Curvy Extra High-Waisted Cuffed Wide-Leg Jeans feature a no-gap waistband and more room around the hips (though the $49.99 denim is also available in the standard shape). Standout details include contrasting cuffs and the dark "Dawn Cuff" wash.

For me, putting on jeans was a process that required a fair share of shimmying. But the struggle was worth it once I pulled Cardi's Old Navy pair over my hips. At this point in the denim dressing operation, I usually see a 2- to 3-inch gap between the button and my stomach (perks of my 36-27-39 measurements). With this pair, the high-rise waistline hugged my figure like a glove. I didn't even need a belt, like I typically do with other denim.

Styles this form-fitting around my midsection usually include wide legs that are, well, less than wide. I'm happy to report that this was a true wide leg that didn't taper toward the bottom. Most importantly: The jeans didn't require any tailoring. The hems stopped in line with my 5-foot-tall frame. (My fellow short fashion girls know that rarely happens.)

Cardi B wore her Old Navy jeans with button-downs in tomato red and dark denim. I see a lot of Canadian tuxedos in my midwestern neck of the woods, so I switched things up with a sheer shirt from L.A. label Leau, a lacy bralette underneath, and vintage Manolo Blahnik flip-flops. Later, I styled the denim more casually by trading my mesh cape for the white top trend fresh from Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Yes, I'm standing in these Instagram-worthy pics, but they're also the best "sitting jeans" I've worn in a while. I made it through an entire family dinner, drinks with my fiancé, and a sunset stroll with my dog without unbuttoning them once. For context, in any other brand-new jeans, I would've snuck away to the bathroom for what I like to call a "breathing break." (IYKYK.) I was inhaling and exhaling just fine, and there was no uncomfortable breaking-in period.

Cardi's cuffed jeans arrived on my doorstep days ago, and they're already starting to feel like second skin. So much so, I've worn them every day this week.

I did take one break to try the petite Arc Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans (styled by Brooks Nader in the campaign), which nudged me outside of my denim comfort zone. I've never given the barrel jeans trend a proper chance, always opting for flared or wide-leg options instead.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the mid-rise, below-the-belly-button jeans formed to my figure. They weren't even from the Curvy catalog! Leaning into the cool-girl energy of the horseshoe shape, I paired the denim with my favorite white T-shirt from Old Navy and Bella Hadid's signature ballet sneakers by Vivaia.

While Cardi's jeans made me feel snatched and sexy, Nader's denim widened my horizons to a '90s-inspired, Katie Holmes-worthy shade and shape.

The new Old Navy campaign proved "you don’t have to overpay for great jeans." By keeping all the denim under $60 (with some styles on sale for $38 or less), there's something for everyone, even curvy and petite fashion people like me.

Before Instagram and TikTok analyzed every detail of the Royal Family’s lives, the public had to rely on daily newspapers to get their royal fix. For Princess Diana, the news coverage was “relentless,” per her former bodyguard Ken Wharfe, and he tells Marie Claire how the late royal was able to handle the level of interest in her life.

Wharfe, who protected Prince William and Prince Harry before becoming Diana’s protection officer in 1987, shares that the princess “was constantly pursued by the media.”

“I always remember Diana would go down to the kitchens at Kensington Palace, where the chef would lay out the morning's newspapers across the deep freezer,” he says, speaking on behalf of Casino.org. “Inevitably, if she wasn't on the front page, she'd be on pages three, four or five. There would always be a story about Diana—hopefully, and thankfully, about her work—but just as often about the state of her marriage, what her children were doing, and so forth.”

Wharfe shares that even though Diana read all of the stories about her deteriorating marriage, “she lived with it” and “understood it was part and parcel of her job.”

“To read those headlines first thing in the morning, then get into a car or a helicopter, fly somewhere like Manchester, Nottingham, or anywhere else in the world, and immediately perform, that takes a remarkable level of professionalism,” he adds.

Diana kept up a steady stream of royal engagements every week when she was married to Prince Charles, and Wharfe says he “often wondered” about the “toll that constant barrage of newspaper coverage took on her.”

Wharfe recalls traveling with the late princess and wondering if she was “really going to be able to pull this off?” when Diana was going through a tough time, noting that officials “all want their part in the occasion, and if the star of the show isn't performing, the whole thing falls apart.”

However, for Princess Diana, the show needed to go on, even after a tough day.

“The Royal Family is a bit like a traveling theater,” Wharfe shares. “You move from one place to the next, and the moment that door opens, you're on stage. You're only as good as your performance. The more professional your performance, the more popular you become. And in that respect, Diana was exceptional.”

One driving motivation for Diana was not disappointing Queen Elizabeth. “At that particular time, despite the unhappiness of her marriage, her commitment was to Her Majesty the Queen,” Wharfe shares, adding that Diana “was loyal to the workings of the British Royal Family and would never let them down, despite her personal unhappiness.”

Spoilers ahead for all episodes of Let's Marry Harry. So, who married Harry? 20 women competed to win Harry Jowsey's heart on the latest Netflix dating series (which felt very similar to The Bachelor), and at the end of Let's Marry Harry, only one got to say, "I do," at the altar. 30-year-old Hawaiian travel photographer Amber Mozo outlasted the competition and said her vows to the 29-year-old reality TV star in the show's finale.

But did they live happily ever after? Rumors were swirling before the show even premiered about whether notorious playboy Harry was still married to the winner of the series. Ahead, we break down his and Amber's journey and whether they are still together after the cameras stopped rolling.

What happened between Harry and Amber on 'Let's Marry Harry?'

Amber Mozo, who was married before this competition, entered the house alongside the 19 other contestants vying for Harry's attention. Amber and Harry had immediate physical chemistry, but their emotional connection took a bit longer to form. At first, Harry admitted that he wasn't even sure if Amber liked him, calling her a "mysterious little cat." He explained in episode 2, "She makes me feel like she hates me, but also loves me, and I think that’s kind of exciting."

It wasn't until Amber opened up about her father's death during their one-on-one date in episode 5 that she and Harry began to form a deeper bond. Harry called it the best date he's ever had. Later in the season, he revealed that he sees bees as a symbol of his late father and that he'd only seen them flying around Amber—a sign of his dad's stamp of approval.

Amber's time living with the other girls came with some drama. First, she got into an argument with 30-year-old Juliana Melchor after Amber interrupted her alone time with Harry. Juliana claimed that Amber pulled Harry away right as she was having a serious heart-to-heart with the eligible bachelor, while Amber said she didn't realize what she was interrupting. The two eventually patched things up, but not after some lingering tension in the house.

The most controversial moment of the season occurred when, in episode 5, Amber and Harry have sex in the shower in Harry's bathroom. (Yes, he also lives in the main house.) In the episode, Amber can be heard saying, "Get naked. You gotta drive the car before you buy it." The other remaining girls overhear and jump to the right conclusion, though Harry initially lies to them about what happened behind the closed door.

Do Harry and Amber actually get married on 'Let's Marry Harry?'

In the finale, Amber calls their relationship "two imperfect people who are perfect for each other," before expressing her love for Harry. Though she was previously married and divorced, Amber says in a confessional that she feels at peace and has clarity about walking down the aisle towards Harry.

Harry breaks things off with finalist Dannelle Davidson in the dressing room while she's in her wedding dress (ouch!) and proceeds to the ceremony, where he meets executive producer Alex Cooper for a quick pep talk before taking his place at the altar.

Harry and Amber exchange heartfelt vows, with him noting their slow-burn romance. "On the first day of this, I didn’t think we’d be here,” he recites from handwritten vows at the altar. “Somehow you made me slow down, soften, and believe in something real. And here you are, and you make me feel like home.” Harry even dons his dad's glasses so that his late father can "see how beautiful" Amber is.

Amber replies, saying, "This whole process with you has been a process of surrendering, letting my guard down… You are so special and so unique, and I always said that unique souls have unique timelines, and it just feels like you were always meant to be on mine from my first date."

They then exchange rings and a kiss to make things official. (And as wild as that sounds, the official word from Netflix is that the marriage is legit.)

Are Harry and Amber still together after 'Let's Marry Harry?'

Neither Amber nor Harry has explicitly commented on the fate of their marriage since the finale aired on August 12, 2026. However, the odds don't seem great.

Before the show even aired, notable reality TV spoiler hound Reality Steve claimed that Harry and Amber had gotten "TV married," meaning they said "I do" but never signed a marriage certificate. The post, published three weeks prior to Let's Marry Harry's premiere, also dropped the alleged bombshell that the pair are no longer together, breaking up "earlier this year."

In the lead-up to the premiere, Amber teased her involvement on the series with an Instagram post that said, "24 hours until the world gets to witness the biggest man hater attempt to date the world's [sic] biggest red flag." While it doesn't explicitly speak to their fate, it could provide a peek into her feelings toward Harry post-show. Harry, meanwhile, told Us Weekly that life after the show is "the best I’ve ever been. Everything that I’ve dreamed of is happening."

Let's Marry Harry ends with an announcement for the show's reunion airing August 26, so hopefully we'll at least get some answers about what could've soured their marriage and led to an alleged breakup then.

Like her eldest daughter Princess Kate, Carole Middleton can't resist a good midi dress, and one brand they both lean on is Me+Em. Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nikki Ogunnaike wasn't wrong when she told me "everyone loves" the Wild Rag by Guest In Residence. Not only did the triangle scarf earn endorsements from the knitwear brand's founder, Gigi Hadid, and her sister, Bella Hadid, but it sold out twice since launching last summer. Now, the best-seller is back just in time for fall—and with a brand-new price tag and slightly updated look.

Receiving an invitation to stay at Balmoral or Sandringham might be thrilling, but it also comes with a fair amount of stress. Sticking to the strict dress code (and the idea of making small talk with the Royal Family) has overwhelmed even the most seasoned of world leaders, but for a 14-year-old Tanya Rose, the experience felt absolutely “terrifying.”

PR guru Rose, who went to boarding school with Prince Edward at Gordonstoun, recently appeared on Amanda Wakeley’s “Style DNA” podcast, and she shared memories of her 1979 visit to Sandringham House.

“I was 14, and Edward invited me to Sandringham just after Christmas, so it was just me who was not family,” Rose said. After she was sent a detailed dress code ahead of the stay, Rose’s father exclaimed, “Oh my God, why did I send you to this school?”

The PR pro explained that the list included “four outfits for breakfast, four outfits for tea, shooting things, Barbours, Wellington boots” and evening wear. “I did not have that wardrobe, so we had to go out and buy everything,” Rose admitted.

“That first night, it was terrifying,” Rose recalled, explaining that the “ladies go into another room” after dinner. With the group including Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and the Queen Mother, Rose said she was “absolutely terrified,” but the late Queen stepped in to make her feel at ease.

“The Queen was so divine because she knew I was nervous,” Rose said. “So she started doing impressions of her groom and just being so sweet to me. She was lovely.”

Although Rose said she wasn’t used to dressing for such an occasion, one of her affordable accessories seemed to dupe the Queen Mother. Rose shared that her mother let her borrow a faux pearl necklace she’d bought at London department store Fenwick, describing it as her mom’s “pride and joy.”

“The first night I remember the Queen Mother saying to me, ‘Is that a family heirloom?’ And I said, ‘Well, my Mummy did give it to me,' but I didn’t say it’s from Fenwicks,” Rose shared with a laugh.

During her Sweetener era in 2018, Ariana Grande's beloved thigh-high boots were her footwear of choice. Once the shows started, the Wicked actor paired Sandy Liang's square-toe Mary Janes with matching socks in L.A., Chicago, and even her hometown of Boca Raton, Florida. Earlier this week, a video of Grande wearing gray socks with the label's split-toe Pearl Slingback Pumps went viral on TikTok.

What Beauty Products Should I Bring on Vacation?

While I feel like I did a pretty good job with the products that I brought, there were still one or two that I could’ve used on the trip, especially as an oily-skinned gal in an extremely hot climate. First on the list? Gel moisturizer.

​“While heavier moisturizers are thicker and have more occlusive ingredients, lightweight moisturizers have more humectants," Naana Boakye, MD, MPH, FAAD, previously told Marie Claire. These are water-attracting substances that draw moisture into the skin, either from the air or from deeper layers of the skin. I, for some reason, decided that sunscreen was adequate enough moisture while on vacation, and while my barrier didn’t freak out a ton, I absolutely felt the difference. My face felt rougher and more textured than it did when I left, even with consistent use of my LED mask. Avoid this rookie mistake.

​Another must-have on vacation? Lip SPF. Yes, your lips need protection from the sun too, and boy did I learn my lesson. I didn’t necessarily get sunburnt, but it’s like I could feel every single line in my lip times 10. Part of the issue was likely that I was surviving on mango daiquiris for almost a week straight, but lip SPF would absolutely have helped smooth the area over time. A little fancier than bike shorts and breezier for warm-weather dressing than ankle-length leggings or (gasp) full-on pants, sleek capri leggings have become an absolute summer must-have for me. I’ve worn this outfit several times before, and honestly, it always hits. A cropped Marc Jacobs rugby shirt with feminine touches of puffed sleeves and a ruffled collar sets the tone of the look as more preppy than sporty, especially when paired with a pop of green ballet flats and a straw box bag. The capris give the whole thing a retro feel, and it’s a classic vibe that feels put together for a farmers market run or popping into some shops in my New England town. It’s a zero-effort combination that, for me, yields lots of compliments. The cropped element of the shirt makes it feel more girly overall, but I think it could be cute with a slightly oversized style from a male counterpart’s closet; just make sure it’s not too long, otherwise it will throw off the proportions of the capri length and look and feel off.

An oversized striped shirt could definitely do the trick here, but there is something about a little peplum that feels really sweet with a pair of capris. This Sacai number from TheRealReal is one of my favorites, which I usually wear with baggy pants, but switching up the proportions to something very fitted and sleek works just as well, with a pop of white kitten heels and a “silly little pouch” bag. This fit is pretty ambiguous, since the top is kind of casual but the pants make it dressier than jeans, making it kind of a casual outing chameleon, perfect for a lunch with a friend or happy hour rooftop cocktails.

I’ve tried this one on a few times in the mirror but never left the house in it until recently, and I didn't regret it! In all honesty, this is a vintage Chanel skirt that I wore as a dress to make it more of a mini, and somehow I got away with it. It felt very “cha-cha-cha” with the capris and a sassy wedge sandal. I added another touch of flouncy flair with a silk scarf tied around the strap of my bag and voila: a look that truly captures the feeling of summer. Admittedly, the vibe is a little bit 00s, and I don’t hate that. I had fun in that era and intend to do the same while wearing it again to an al fresco date night or to a garden cocktail party with a fun crowd.

Sarah Ferguson's whereabouts have been a mystery since last October, when the former Duchess of York was stripped of her title alongside ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. But in a new episode of the Daily Mail's "Palace Confidential" show, senior editor-at-large Richard Kay revealed where Ferguson has been staying over the summer.

The former duchess's ex-boyfriend Paddy McNally, 88, died on July 22, and the two dated for three years before she became involved with Andrew. According to Kay, the Formula One mogul frequently allowed Sarah and her daughters to stay at his various European properties, and he heard that's exactly what Ferguson has been doing lately.

“I understand that Sarah has been spending time at Paddy’s place in Verbier over the summer,” Kay said. The Swiss ski resort is packed with visitors during the winter months, but Kay noted that summer provides “a completely different vibe” that’s perfect for solitude.

“You get a few middle-aged people who like walking in the hills, but it’s much more laid-back and low-key,” he said. “A perfect place to hide up.”

Although McNally died with an estimated £600 million fortune, Kay says that suggestions of the businessman “leaving a slice” to Ferguson are likely off the mark.

”I am not sure that's actually going to happen,” he said, explaining that he's heard that Paddy “took the view that he had provided for her a great deal throughout her life” already.

Where Ferguson will head next is unclear. She was photographed ducking down in a car while attending granddaughter Athena's christening in December, and a snap of her at an Austrian ski resort was published by the Sun in April. Other than those instances, the ex-duchess hasn't been seen in public since the Duchess of Kent's funeral in September 2025.

You'd think filming a music video in New York City during the summer would call for shoes with the least possible coverage. However, lately, unseasonal shoes have stolen the role of sandals. Earlier this season, Olivia Rodrigo lip synced to "Stupid Song" in tall buckled boots. On August 10, Cardi B brought the divisive peep-toe boots trend to Brooklyn to film the "AH HA" music video.

Two weeks after the rapper released the song, she wasted no time starring in an equally unapologetic short film. Paparazzi captured Cardi's on-set outfit, complete with a zip-up crop top, matching micro shorts, and the scene-stealing shoes.

At first glance, the boots, with their skintight shafts and sky-high stilettos, appeared to be your average knee-highs. But zoom in, and you'll notice the open toe boxes. The black leather interlaced her toes à la fingerless gloves, showcasing Cardi's on-trend white pedicure.

While I've been unable to identify the brand behind Cardi's boots, I wouldn't be surprised if her stylist, Kollin Carter, sourced designer archives for this throwback style. In the 2000s, the peep-toe boots walked so today's A-list-approved hybrid shoes (think: open-toe loafers and backless mules) could run.

Fashion shows like Balenciaga Fall 2007 and McQueen Spring 2011 popularized the cross between peep-toe pumps and booties. In 2013, Rihanna walked in a graphic pair from Tom Ford. Fast-forward to 2016, and Kim Kardashian wore a thigh-high, skintight take on the trend.

From there, peep-toe boots began to drop in and out of the celebrity street style scene. Victoria Beckham's eponymous label revived the Y2K silhouette for Paris Fashion Week Fall 2019. That year, the creative director doubled down on the look with versions in burgundy, tomato red, butter yellow, and even leopard print.

Once 2024 rolled around, Gen Z fashion girls proved the polarizing shoe trend has nine lives. In late April, Kylie Jenner styled thong sandals-turned-boots as effortlessly as flat flip-flops. If you’re trying to fade dark spots, chances are azelaic acid and niacinamide have both made their way onto your radar—or, more than likely, your FYP. I know they have for me. As someone who deals with breakouts and the angry marks they leave behind, I’ve reached for both ingredients at different points with the same pursuit in mind: clearer, more even-looking skin.

“Both can help with dark spots, but they take slightly different routes to get there,” says board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD. That’s also what makes choosing between them a little confusing. They overlap just enough to seem interchangeable, even though they don’t actually work in quite the same way.

That distinction matters because “dark spots” is a pretty broad category. The marks left behind after a breakout aren’t necessarily treated the same way as melasma or years of sun damage, and choosing an ingredient based solely on "brightening" claims can only get you so far. Azelaic acid and niacinamide target pigment through different mechanisms, come with slightly different benefits, and, most importantly, have different efficacies depending on what’s behind the discoloration in the first place.

So, which deserves a place in your routine? Ahead, board-certified dermatologists break down azelaic acid versus niacinamide for dark spots, including how each works, which types of discoloration they can help address, and whether you actually need to choose between them at all.

What’s the Difference Between Azelaic Acid and Niacinamide?

For a quick science lesson, everybody's skin contains melanocytes, which are tiny cells that create melanin—the pigment that gives your hair, eyes, and skin their color. When external triggers, such as sun exposure, skin inflammation from injuries or acne, or hormonal shifts, occur, excess melanin can be produced, resulting in increased pigmentation. This leads to dark spots, a catch-all term for different types of skin discoloration. Azelaic acid and niacinamide are two skin-brightening ingredients that target these dark spots, but they do so in different ways.

Dr. Gohara compares pigment production to a factory: Azelaic acid helps to slow down the production line, while niacinamide essentially disrupts the shipping process, so less pigment is transferred to the surrounding skin cells. I find that distinction much more helpful than simply thinking of both as “brightening ingredients.” They can address the same concern, but they’re doing different jobs—which is exactly why one may be a better fit depending on what’s causing your discoloration.

• Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid helps tackle discoloration earlier in the pigment-production process by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. It also helps calm inflammation and keep pores clear, which is a particularly useful combination when breakouts are responsible for the marks you’re trying to fade in the first place. And unlike niacinamide, azelaic acid is also available in prescription-strength formulas, though you’ll find lower concentrations in plenty of over-the-counter skincare products.

• Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, works a little differently: It still helps prevent dark spots from forming, but it does so a little later in the process. Once melanin is produced by melanocytes, it’s packaged into tiny structures called melanosomes and transferred to nearby skin cells. That's where niacinamide swoops in: it helps interrupt that transfer, so less pigment makes its way into the surrounding skin cells and contributes to visible discoloration. It also supports the skin barrier and helps calm inflammation, which is why it tends to pop up in everything from dedicated dark spot serums to moisturizers meant for sensitive skin.

Which Is Better for Dark Spots?

Azelaic acid gets my vote in a few key scenarios. Dr. Gohara tends to favor it for post-acne marks because, as she puts it, “you get a nice two-for-one: it addresses both the breakout and the pigment it can leave behind.” It also has good evidence behind it for melasma.

Niacinamide, meanwhile, is the gentler brightener. Board-certified dermatologist Sejal Shah, MD, says it works well for most skin types, including sensitive skin, and can help with uneven tone while supporting the skin barrier. I’d especially look to it if your routine already has a lot going on and you don’t want to pile on another potentially irritating active.

True sun spots are a slightly different story. Neither ingredient is necessarily the star there, according to Dr. Gohara. For more established sun spots, or solar lentigines, ingredients like retinoids or hydroquinone have a more established track record, while in-office treatments like lasers and IPL can target individual spots more directly.

The gist: Azelaic acid tends to make more sense for discoloration tied to inflammation, like post-acne marks, while it can also be used as part of a treatment plan for melasma. Niacinamide, meanwhile, is a good option for more general uneven tone and can be particularly appealing if you want a gentler ingredient that also supports the skin barrier. Sunscreen matters regardless of which camp your discoloration falls into. Trying to fade pigment without daily SPF defeats the purpose.

Can I Use Azelaic Acid and Niacinamide Together?

Good news if you were already mentally rearranging your skincare routine: You don’t necessarily have to pick one. Since azelaic acid and niacinamide approach discoloration differently, they can complement each other nicely.

“I typically recommend applying niacinamide first to support the skin barrier, followed by azelaic acid,” says Dr. Shah. She also points out that there isn’t strong evidence that the order of application meaningfully affects their compatibility or efficacy, so this isn’t a layering rule you need to obsess over. Azelaic acid can go first, too, and there are formulas that combine both.

What I’d pay closer attention to is tolerance. If your routine is already packed with exfoliants or other actives, adding two more treatments at once may not be the smartest experiment. There’s no prize for fitting the most ingredients onto your face before bed, and it can actually backfire resulting in angry, pissed off skin.

How Long Do Azelaic Acid and Niacinamide Take to Work?

“Pigment is a marathon, not a sprint,” says Dr. Gohara, which is unfortunately very accurate if you’ve ever spent weeks inspecting the same post-breakout mark in the mirror like myself. With consistent use, improvement from either ingredient may start to show up in about 4 to 8 weeks, though more meaningful changes often take 8 to 12 weeks or longer. Azelaic acid may have a slight advantage when acne and inflammation are driving the discoloration, because it targets several aspects of the problem at once.

And I know you’ve heard this a million times, but daily sunscreen is part of the deal. Dr. Gohara notes that trying to fade dark spots without protecting your skin from UV exposure is essentially working against yourself.

Are There Any Negatives to Azelaic Acid or Niacinamide?

Gentle doesn’t mean completely irritation-proof. Azelaic acid is more likely of the two to cause some initial stinging, burning, itching, dryness, or redness, particularly when you first introduce it. Niacinamide tends to be easier on skin, though high concentrations can still trigger redness or irritation.

“More is not always better in skincare,” says Dr. Gohara. “I would rather see someone consistently use a well-tolerated formula than chase the highest percentage on the label.”

But percentage chasing isn’t the only way a dark-spot routine can go sideways. Dr. Shah frequently sees people layer too many exfoliants and actives, use their products inconsistently, or skip sunscreen altogether. Another mistake is treating every patch of discoloration the same without first figuring out what caused it. Even an expensive in-office treatment can only do so much if you’re not protecting your results with a consistent at-home routine and daily SPF.

Prime Video's new series from My Old Ass writer/director Megan Park is a coming-of-age drama centered on the titular small Canadian island. When N.Y.C. twins Annie (Ella Rubin) and Connor (Keen Ruffalo) inherit an idyllic cottage from their estranged grandfather, Annie sets out to visit Sterling Point, which was her late adoptive mother's favorite place in the world. But once she arrives, Annie finds that a secret sister (played by Amélie Hoeferle) is just the start of an avalanche of secrets surrounding their late mother.

Since its debut on August 5, Sterling Point has won the hearts of critics and fans, becoming the streamer's latest beloved word-of-mouth hit. The eight-part original series may have viewers wondering when they can book a seaplane to the small-town island. All About the Real 'Sterling Point' Locations

Where Was 'Sterling Point' Filmed?

According to star Ella Rubin, Sterling Point was filmed entirely in southeastern Ontario, Canada, "half in Toronto and half in Muskoka." The latter is a district two hours north of Toronto that comprises multiple villages and towns, as well as over 1,600 lakes. While Muskoka has plenty of rentals for visitors, most cottages are privately owned, especially ones that have been maintained for decades by the same families.

As seen on Sterling Point, Muskoka is part of "cottage country," one of Canada's most popular summer enclaves for wealthy families. (If that doesn't give you Hamptons vibes, Summer House's Canadian spinoff will be set in Muskoka.) The region regularly hosts celebrity couples from David and Victoria Beckham to Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, so Oona’s Kaia Gerber name-drop in episode 1 actually wasn't that far off.

Another reason that "cottage country" may sound familiar? Heated Rivalry put the vacation locale on the map late last year, as the cottage (of "I'm coming to the..." fame) is a real-life Muskoka rental property.

As for specifics, the Prime Video series was filmed in several locations around the region's three major lakes: Lake Muskoka, Lake Joseph, and Lake Rosseau. Per Streets of Toronto, some of the local haunts featured include the family-run Mortimer's Marina and the Sparrow Lake Camp, a real-life summer camp that also offers nightly tent stays.

Is 'Sterling Point' a Real Place?

The town of Sterling Point may be fictional, but it's based on personal history. Creator Megan Park was inspired by her own childhood summers in Muskoka in the '90s while writing both Sterling Point and her 2024 coming-of-age film My Old Ass. Park explained to CBC that the series is a love letter to the rapidly-changing region.

"There is tension up there that's very real with people who have had these cottages in their families for [generations], and new people coming in...environmental challenges," she told the outlet. "Muskoka is stunning, and I'm so glad that the world gets to see it."

There's also a sweet connection hidden within the show's name. According to a blog from the rental company Jayne's Cottages, one of their properties, a "century-old traditional cottage," was the filming location for Elliot's childhood home in My Old Ass. The name of the cottage? Sterling Point.

Prince Philip was never one to keep his opinions to himself, and when it came to his in-laws, the late Duke of Edinburgh was one of the few people who had “reservations” about one of the most-beloved members of the Royal Family.

The Queen Mother was wildly popular with friends, family and the general public, with royal biographer Gyles Brandreth writing in his book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait that the Queen Mother’s niece, Margaret Rhodes, told him, “Everybody adored her. Everybody.”

Various people described the Queen Mother as “captivating” and “the most charming person in the world” to Brandreth. While the biographer added that he’s “met few who didn’t” adore Queen Elizabeth's beloved mother, there was one person who was less positive about the late royal.

When Brandreth, who formed a friendship with Prince Philip after working on charity projects together, asked the royal about his mother-in-law, he was less ebullient. “She certainly keeps going,” Prince Philip told Brandreth at the time of her 100th birthday in August 2000.

Brandreth noted that Philip wasn’t as enthusiastic about the Queen Mum for a few reasons, one of them being the treatment that he initially received from her brother when he was first pursuing Queen Elizabeth. But the other had to do with her close relationship with King Charles (then Prince Charles).

“Prince Philip had reservations about his mother-in-law, in part because he knew that members of her family had reservations about him in the 1940s,” Brandreth wrote. He added that “largely” the issue was that Philip “felt she had an emotional hold over Prince Charles ‘that’s not always been to his benefit, in my opinion.’”

It’s no wonder Charles was so close to his grandmother, as he spent a large amount of time with her as a child when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip traveled. "In some ways, the Queen Mother was a mother figure to Charles just because the Queen became Queen when Charles was so young,” author Gareth Russell, author of Do Let's Have Another Drink!: The Dry Wit and Fizzy Life of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, told People.

“There were a lot of tours of the Commonwealth and every time the Queen had to go away, Prince Charles stayed with the Queen Mother," Russell continued. “They had a great sense of humor, and she always encouraged him.”

With the Queen Mother, Prince Charles was also able to form a different kind of bond than he did with his father, who didn't always get along with his sensitive, artistic son.

At the end of the day, it also came down to a difference in personalities between Philip and his mother-in-law . Brandreth, who called Prince Philip “a cool customer,” said that the late duke thought the Queen Mother’s exuberant personality was “overdone.” And Philip’s cousin, Patricia Mountbatten, told Brandreth that the prince thought his mother-in-law was “occasionally irritatingly gushing”—a quality that one wouldn’t dream of assigning to Philip.

Hailey Bieber adopted the heeled flip-flops trend long before it became summer 2026's hero shoe. That's not to say her taste in thong sandals stopped evolving. On August 11, Bieber debuted her most unusual take on the trend yet: Massimo Dutti's cross between wedges and kitten heels.

The tapered 2-centimeter-tall heels give the V-strapped shoes a wedge sandal treatment. Perhaps that unusual silhouette switch is exactly what secured them the sixth-place slot on the fashion search engine's list. It might be pushing 90 degrees right now, but my mind is firmly on fall fashion, and for the royals, they’ve already started digging into their autumn wardrobes at Balmoral. The weather in Scotland is notoriously rainy and chilly, even in August, and it wouldn’t be unusual for temperatures to be in the fifties. But even if it's still steamy here on the East Coast, it’s never too early to start dreaming about cozy sweaters, riding boots and tweed blazers.

The royals have been escaping to the Scottish highlands for some R&R ever since Prince Albert purchased Balmoral Castle for Queen Victoria in 1852, and there’s something about Scotland that makes you want to fill your entire closet with tartan (or is that just me?). But achieving the perfect Balmoral outfit doesn't just mean covering yourself in plaid, according to Tom Birbeck, director at Scottish heritage brand House of Bruar.

“Mastering the Balmoral look is all about combining classic country elegance with subtle hints of Scottish heritage,” Birbeck tells Marie Claire.

Birbeck continues that Balmoral style “relies heavily on traditional fabrics like tweed and tartan, durable outdoor layers, and a rustic aesthetic made famous by the British Royal Family's Highland retreats."

For the royals, that means not just leaning into countryside style, but thinking carefully about functionality. “The quintessential Balmoral outfit includes a reliable waxed or quilted jacket, which is vital for the unpredictable weather,” Birbeck advises, adding that “cable-knit or cashmere sweaters in neutral tones” are ideal for layering underneath.

“You can also incorporate high-quality tweed jackets or capes, and try adding subtle touches of tartan through scarves or skirts,” he shares.

While our glimpses of Princess Kate at Balmoral have been limited to photos of her driving to church, Queen Elizabeth’s Scottish style has been highly documented over the years. Think quilted jackets, her famous silk headscarves, tweed skirts and plenty of tartan.

While Princess Kate, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne have already packed up their jackets and boots for Balmoral, we (unfortunately) still have plenty of time here on the East Coast to get our autumn pieces ready.

During the fall months, I wear tons of leather jackets; they’re easy, edgy, and work with truly any combination. The punk-rock silhouette alongside the sweet pink shade felt like the perfect juxtaposition for a Saturday lunch with a friend.

Pregnant celebrities won't hesitate to sacrifice footwear trends for underrated silhouettes with more support. On August 10 in Paris, however, Natalie Portman's Vejas nailed the white sneaker trend and soothed her soles.

Before catching a movie with her boyfriend, Tanguy Destable, Portman was spotted in a baby bump-shielding shirtdress, a cozy fleece cardigan, oval-shaped sunglasses, and what appear to be Veja's V-10 sneakers.

Between the thick, supportive gumsoles and the flexible cotton canvas, it's no wonder they're highly rated and maternity-approved. Portman's pair came in V-10's usual white base and featured the "V" logo in black. Earlier in the Oscar winner's third pregnancy, the Vejas would've set you back $160, but now they're down to $112.

Since Veja launched the V-10s in 2015 (to celebrate the French brand's tenth anniversary), the silhouette has maintained a permanent spot in cool mom closets. Back in the 2010s, everyone from Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon to Meghan Markle and Lily Collins paired them with street style looks. Portman, however, hasn't publicly worn them since May 2024, when they finished her jeans-and-a-T-shirt uniform in London. With this latest look, it's safe to say the Hollywood-wide Veja hiatus is officially over.

Boden has been one of my personal favorite British brands for more than a decade, and Princess Kate would certainly co-sign that statement. She’s worn Boden’s sweaters, dresses, loafers and more for everything from Zoom meetings to her official Christmas card photos, and she’s also dressed her three kids in Boden pieces.

Princess Charlotte, in particular, has worn the brand for some big moments, like the blue and white zigzag sweater she showed off in her 8th birthday portrait. Right now, Adidas Samba sneakers are stuck to Kristen Stewart's soles like glue. Following several Samba looks, Stewart once again styled her go-to black-and-neon It trainers with a four-figure leather dress for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on August 10.

Adidas Sambas are to Stewart, as Christian Louboutins are to Zendaya. In fact, the actor, who is currently promoting her new film The Wrong Girls, wore them twice in one day. First, she paired the Samba Deco SPZL sneakers with a graphic tee, linen blazer, and black micro shorts while out in New York.

A few hours later, taking the stress of deciding on a new shoe off of stylist Tara Swennen's shoulders, the Twilight alum re-styled the same pair. For the second Samba appearance of the day, she proved celebrity stylist Allison Bornstein's "Wrong Shoe Theory" right when she unexpectedly paired the athletic style with a leather spaghetti-strap evening slip. The $2,400 Bikini Dress is from Alex Perry's Pre-Fall 2026 collection and features a V-neck bodice and calf-brushing skirt.

Leave it to the indie-sleaze queen to style a sleek evening dress with sneakers. Though it should be noted that they aren't the run-of-the-mill Sambas that earned Billie Eilish's endorsement last weekend. The athletic label launched the suede sneakers with black gum soles and neon green stripes in November 2023. The special-edition color combination isn't widely available anymore, but if you're lucky enough to secure your size, the sneakers are worth the $326 investment.

At this point in the summer, it's simply too scorching to wear all-black. Judging by Anne Hathaway's latest skin-revealing maternity look, she disagrees. The pregnant star just gave a masterclass in taking the heat-averse styling risk anyway.

King Charles has been a supporter of environmental causes and organic farming long before it was popular. In 1970, he gave a speech talking about the damage things like single-use plastics have on the environment—subjects few were discussing at the time—but the reception from the public and the media wasn’t what he’d hoped for, with many calling him “mad” to worry about such topics. But The King’s former head chef, Visen Anenden, recently shared that Charles has been vindicated in today’s age and was “way ahead of the curve” with his views on food.

Speaking on behalf of Heart Bingo Online, Anenden says that when he worked for His Majesty, it was “like an encyclopedia of learning about seasonality, vegetables, and organic meats.”

“Everything is made in-house,” he adds. “What King Charles preaches, he does. We would get everything from the Duchy Estate. So, when it comes to milk, it would come from the cows, and we would pasteurize it for things like double cream. It’s extremely self-sufficient. We would make our own breads, cakes, and juices—everything.”

Anenden says there “was a huge learning curve” when he started working for The King in the early 2000s because the restaurant industry wasn’t focused on sustainable, organic food like today.

“From a chef’s perspective, when you come from restaurants, at the time I was learning, there was no such thing as heritage produce, seasonality, or ethical sourcing, nothing about that when I was starting out,” he says.

Since King Charles eats seasonally, Anenden had to focus on creating recipes that were right in season using ingredients pulled from the Highgrove gardens, the Balmoral estate, or wherever they were traveling.

“Charles was way ahead of the curve,” Anenden adds. “They called him the Mad Prince, but that can be taken back. He was always about sustainability and sourcing more British produce. That was one thing throughout his entire time—sourcing British produce.”

​I’ve been playing around with the new glosses fo a while now, and I have to say: Danessa Myricks Beauty has another hit on its hands. As Myricks hinted at earlier, the glosses are a cross between a treatment and a traditional lip gloss. I find them to have some tack, but they aren’t necessarily sticky, just thicker than the average gloss on the market today. That being said, these lip glosses are also extremely pigmented, so I personally don’t go in with a ton of product, just enough to get some color on my lips and properly blend it into my lip liner.

I have found that if I add three or more layers to the lips (which, objectively, is a ton of product, but I had to do it for science), then the formula is more on the sticky side of the spectrum. I personally like to use these products in place of lipstick regularly, so I’ll do a liner, the Glosswork lip gloss, and then I’ll add a layer of clear gloss on top for that extra shine. If I use it on top of an already pigmented lip combination (lip liner, two or more lipsticks, etc), I dab just a bit in the middle of my lips to top everything off.

I find the wear to be extremely comfortable in both instances, and they stay on for hours. After I eat or drink I do typically need to reapply, but I will say that the product only comes off toward the inner parts of my lips. The outer layers stayed fully intact, which was a welcome surprise.

It’s no secret that I am a Westman Atelier super fan. On a daily basis, I’m using Baby Cheeks in shade Fizz (it’s bright, but don’t knock it until you try it), the Lit Up Highlighter Stick in Nectar (I’ve been through at least 10 of these), and the Sun Tone Bronzing Cream in shade 1. While it officially launches today, August 11, I’ve been secretly testing the $69 formula for the better part of the past month, and let me just say: it’s easily one of the best foundations I’ve ever tried.

I typically gravitate toward medium coverage formulas (Chanel Sublimage L’Essence d’Tiente and Laura Mercier Real Flawless Foundation are my other go-tos), which is exactly what this provides. But it has a finish that I’ve yet to find in a foundation: it is completely pore-blurring—almost as if I’m walking around with a ring light or Instagram filter permanently on my skin. What Is In the Supréme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation Formula?

Founder Gucci Westman says it best: “It’s blurring, it’s hydrating, it’s weightless. It gives the skin this unbelievable lit-from-within, real-skin finish. And then you have the addition of this clean, potent skincare technology that’s making your skin better every time you wear it.”

Let’s break down that last part, shall we? The formula itself is very much a skincare-first makeup makeup. The so-called Bio-Complex is a proprietary blend of peptides, including ogliopeptide-1, which means it's incredibly well-positioned to smooth, brighten, and firm the skin. Next up on the ingredient list is amino acid powder. These little guys absorb excess oil throughout the day and blur pores in a manner I have yet to experience from any other foundation. The last few standouts are rosemary, sunflower, and seaweed extracts, which are responsible for the silky, hydrating texture of the foundation.

How Do I Apply the Supréme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation?

The brand recommends using a brush or your fingers, but my process looks a little different. Because I like a pretty glowy complexion, I use two pumps of the Victoria Beckham Beauty Illuminator in shade Rosé as my primer. Then I put one pump of the foundation onto a damp Beautyblender—I’m currently using shade M1. I bounce around my whole face—from the center and work my way out—until every bit of skin (and my neck) is covered.

Then, I go in with the rest of my products like blush, bronzer, and the rest, and everything blends seamlessly together. There's no pilling whatsoever. I normally go in with just a touch of powder on my oily zones, but to be totally honest, this foundation is pretty self-setting and does a great job of keeping those greasy spots like the sides of my nose and the chin under control, so I’ve been skipping that step.

How Does the Supréme Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation Wear Throughout the Day?

I always find that the true test of a foundation is the wear. Most formulas look great at the jump, but by around two or three in the afternoon, they’re fading, settling into my pores, emphasizing dry spots, or just looking a little crusty. This foundation does exactly the opposite—it truly looks better as the day goes on. It sinks into my skin so naturally that when I look in the mirror, I can’t tell if the makeup is working double time or just a really good skin day. It melts into my complexion and creates this bouncy, juicy texture gives me a plump, hydrated finish—somehow without the oil.

Foundation isn’t as mindless to swap in and out of your routine as mascara, so I understand any hesitancy to make a swap. The Sandringham estate might be best known lately as the home of disgraced royal Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, but another member of the Royal Family has been spotted hard at work in Norfolk this summer. According to the Sun, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s 18-year-old son James, the Earl of Wessex, has taken on a summer job helping out as a farmhand at the estate, much to the shock of staffers.

“Everyone is so used to only seeing James smartly turned out with his family at functions at Christmas and Easter so I had to do a double take,” one estate worker said after spotting James riding a tractor.

“He might be The King’s nephew but he is more than happy to get his hands dirty and muck in,” the staffer added. “Driving tractors around Sandringham is not an easy task and it can mean long hours. But it doesn’t matter how rich you are, learning a good work ethic at a young age can always help.”

James, who just graduated from secondary school at Radley College this summer, will be receiving the results of his A-levels next week, the rigorous tests used in the U.K. to determine university placement.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have not made any announcements about their son's future plans, although it's been rumored he'll be taking a gap year.

The Earl of Wessex isn't the only member of Sophie and Edward's family to take on a regular job before heading off to college. His big sister, Lady Louise, worked at a garden center to earn extra money ahead of her time at the University of St Andrews, and she recently took on a job helping out at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

I wore Amina Muaddi shoes throughout my wedding weekend (suggested by my friend and stylist Shiona Turini), and I couldn’t stop telling her “I get it” now. I totally understand why the girls love them—extremely comfortable—and love the mesh options in particular. They didn’t rub against my toes or feel constrictive. Additionally, this heel shape was perfect for our indoor-outdoor events, and the height was so easy to get around in.

Summer used to be the time for Adidas Sambas to shine on the celebrity style circuit. But this year, even slimmer sister sneakers, like the Tokyos and Taekwondos, have started a Samba sighting shortage. That's not to say the 76-year-old shoes are officially outdated. On August 8, Billie Eilish proved Adidas Sambas are just as timeless today as ever.

For a trip to Toronto with her boyfriend, Nat Wolff, Eilish skipped past the Air Jordans and ballet sneakers on her shoe rack and chose black Adidas Sambas instead. The classic $95 trainers featured a black leather base, darkened gum soles, and white stripes you know and love. Interestingly, the Grammy winner is the second A-lister to style Sambas in the last week. Kristen Stewart wore a black-and-lime green pair in New York City over the weekend.

The "Birds of a Feather" singer kept a low profile in a black baby tee, oval-shaped sunglasses, and a butter yellow Green Bay Packers baseball cap. In true Eilish style, she further embraced the sportiness of her Sambas with the board shorts trend. The surfer-beloved bottoms were knee-length and featured an elasticized waistband and drawstrings.

While Taekwondo and Tokyo sneakers recently experienced a spike in A-list approval, thanks to longtime Samba loyalists like Hailey Bieber, Dakota Johnson, Sophie Turner, and Stewart, the best-sellers will not be going anywhere.

The Spanish royal family is officially on their summer vacation, and they went for a matching moment while heading out to dinner in Palma de Mallorca, Spain over the weekend. Queen Letizia, King Felipe, Queen Sofia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia dressed in shades of blue and white for the evening on Sunday, August 9, and if Sofia’s dress looks familiar, it’s because both her sister and mother have worn the breezy style.

Infanta Sofia, 19, borrowed the off-the-shoulder dress that Princess Leonor wore to the 2025 summer reception at Marivent Palace—the same ruffled design Queen Letizia wore to the event in 2023.

Sofia’s white maxi dress, designed by Desigual x Stella Jean, featured a tiered skirt and a bright blue pattern, and she paired it with flat white espadrilles by Espadrilles Picón.

Big sister Leonor also wore shoes by the Spanish brand, choosing the same blue ankle-tie style she wore with Sofia’s dress last year.

As for the rest of the future Spanish queen’s outfit, Leonor debuted a blue swan-print halter dress by Spanish label Babbaki. Keeping the mother/daughter dressing theme in mind, she carried mom Queen Letizia’s pink Adolfo Domínguez leather clutch for their night out at Mia Restaurant.

Queen Letizia went classic in a sleeveless white dress and some new accessories, wearing crystal-adorned Pedro Garcia sandals and carrying a hand-woven Heimat Atlantica basket bag covered in floral-shaped shells.

I consider my fashion aesthetic minimalist. I feel most comfortable in simple silhouettes and classic pieces, and my closet contains enough white, gray, and beige to rival a Scandinavian paint chip display. Yet, whenever I go on vacation, a style alter ego emerges. Suddenly, the loudest, brightest items I own make their way out of the back of my closet, as though giving my most-worn wardrobe staples some time off, too.

That was certainly the case on a recent return trip to Cartagena, Colombia. Against the city’s color-soaked walls—and surrounded by tropical flowers, blue water, and a rainbow-hued assortment of fruit—I embraced saturated shades, exuberant prints, and accessories that would ordinarily feel over-the-top for my everyday life in New York. I didn’t entirely abandon my usual dressing instincts, though. I still packed versatile separates, limited myself to a handful of shoes, and prioritized pieces that could be worn more than one way.

This packing list got me through everything the "Gateway to South America" had to offer, from historic sites and waterfront views to shopping, bar-hopping, salsa dancing, and a day on the water. Ahead, everything I fit into a carry-on (a nonnegotiable for me on any trip shorter than 10 days) to contend with the heat and humidity in my newfound maximalist style.

Why Visit Cartagena

Wardrobe considerations aside, there are plenty of reasons to travel to Cartagena right now. There’s the UNESCO-designated Walled City, the historic Getsemaní neighborhood with its colorful murals, and landmarks such as the home of One Hundred Years of Solitude writer Gabriel García Márquez.

Four Seasons Hotel Cartagena, spread across a collection of restored historic buildings that include a former 1920s social club and a 16th-century San Francisco Cloister, opened in April 2026, marking a major new luxury arrival to the city. Cartagena also has a growing design and fashion scene, with standalone boutiques from some of Colombia’s biggest names, including Silvia Tcherassi and Johanna Ortiz, alongside shops and markets specializing in locally sourced emeralds and handcrafted accessories such as woven mochila bags.

Its food-and-drink scene is just as compelling. There is Celele, the acclaimed restaurant devoted to the culinary traditions and ingredients of Colombia’s Caribbean coast; the newly opened Grand Grill, which brings old-school steakhouse glamour to the city and marks Major Food Group’s first outpost in the region; and Medellín's favorite Carmen, which serves contemporary cuisine inspired by Colombia’s biodiversity in a secluded courtyard that feels worlds away from the bustle outside. Then there are also some of the continent’s most celebrated cocktail bars, including Alquímico (No. 11 on the 2025 World’s 50 Best Bars list!) and El Barón, as well as a growing specialty-coffee culture at spots like Libertario and Café Rialto.

Packing List: Sightseeing

For a morning and early afternoon of exploring Barrio Getsemaní, I packed a matching shorts set from London-based staples brand With Nothing Underneath. I tend to gravitate toward co-ords when traveling because of their mix-and-match potential: I can wear the shorts over a bathing suit, pair them with a tank top, or toss the shirt over a summer dress in an air-conditioned space. The set’s relaxed proportions were also ideal for navigating heat, humidity, and crowded cobblestone streets without looking as though I had dressed exclusively for survival.

Speaking of cobblestones, whenever I know I’ll be walking extensively, I pack a pair of white sneakers. My usual choice is a pair of tennis shoes from Keds: They take up very little suitcase space and work with nearly everything.

After accidentally burning my scalp on a past trip, a hat has become equally nonnegotiable in sunny climates. I love this older Loewe bucket hat because it folds flat inside my suitcase without losing its shape. I bought the bag, a traditionally woven Colombian mochila, at a local market during my previous trip to Cartagena. Bringing it back felt fitting. More importantly, it was roomy enough to hold my daytime essentials (sunglasses, sunscreen, water), could be worn hands-free (to take all the photos), and gave the outfit an electric jolt of color.

Boat & Beach

Colombia’s Caribbean coast offers access to some incredible water, so a boat-day outfit was essential. For a trip spent swimming and exploring nearby islands, I started with a swimsuit from Left On Friday. The brand has become one of my favorites in recent years for its supportive-yet-comfortable swimwear that works for everything from laps and kayaking to lounging on the beach. I’ll even wear the Streamline one-piece as a tank top with shorts away from the water.

For a lunch stop at Cala Mambo—a private-island retreat in the Rosario Islands, roughly 50 minutes by boat from central Cartagena, that can also be rented for overnight stays—I added a colorful robe-style cover-up from L’Agence, a hat from Gigi Burris, and Saint Laurent sunglasses.

The cover-up delivered the dramatic vacation color I wanted while remaining easy to throw on over a wet swimsuit for lunch. Its versatility also extends beyond the beach: Later in the trip, I wore it as a duster, over black pants and a tank top, to add color to an otherwise somber formula.

Drinks, Dinner, Dancing

For sunset drinks at El Palmar, the Four Seasons rooftop bar with panoramic views of Cartagena, I wore an older one-shoulder maxi dress from Brazilian label Farm Rio. Its oversized florals echoed the tropical greenery, while the sweeping silhouette didn't require much additional styling, which is my preferred ratio of effort to impact while on vacation.

Since the return of heeled thong sandals, I rarely travel without a pair. They can handle a reasonable stretch of cobblestone while still looking dressy enough for dinner (in this case, Pizzeria della Chiesa), and their barely-there shape takes up almost no room in a suitcase.

The floral hair clip came from Pico, a Copenhagen accessories store that Marie Claire’s Halie LeSavage introduced me to years ago during Copenhagen Fashion Week. It reinforced the dress’s tropical mood while keeping my hair off my neck—a practical consideration in Cartagena, especially when the night ends with salsa dancing at nearby Café Havana. A shell-adorned bag from Simon Miller offered one final wink to the seaside setting.

Leisure

Not every Cartagena outfit needs to pull inspiration from its tropical surroundings. For a slower day that began with a courtyard cortado and lulada juice, I returned to my usual black-and-white uniform. From there, I visited Colombian brand boutiques whose pieces I can only find through select retailers in New York, including Silvia Tcherassi, Johanna Ortiz, and Agua Bendita. I'm still regretting not buying this wonderfully quirky monkey handbag from Mercedes Salazar.

When traveling somewhere hot, I always pack extra cotton and linen tanks and shirts that can be mixed with my separates—and can withstand the inevitable midday outfit change. These Pleats Please Issey Miyake pants are also among my essentials, particularly on travel days, because they don’t wrinkle, are comfortable enough to wear all day, and look put-together even after a long-haul flight.

To prevent the outfit from looking like something I would wear in New York, I added colorful jelly sandals and playful accessories. Bright sunglasses, printed scarves that can be worn over the hair or around the neck, and statement jewelry require very little suitcase space but can completely transform a minimal look. For Cartagena, I leaned into pieces featuring shells, pearls, and other under-the-sea references.

For all its brighter colors and loud prints, my Cartagena wardrobe wasn’t so different from my everyday one. The silhouettes remained simple, each piece had to be versatile, and nearly everything needed to work in more than one outfit. The difference was that, for once, neutrals were relegated to a supporting role.

Between the viral heel caps at the Cruise 2026 show and the beanstalk stilettos on the Couture Fall 2026 runway, Chanel keeps outdoing itself in the freaky footwear department. Even more practical pairs from creative director Matthieu Blazy—like Jennifer Garner's heeled slingback sandals—offer unconventional twists on timeless shoe trends.

On August 9, the 13 Going On 30 actor took her newest luxury purchase for a spin around Santa Monica, California. To complement the Chanel heels, Garner styled a black long-sleeve V-neck sweater and a floral-print midi skirt with scalloped lace from Prada.

Though not featured on the runway, the multi-strap sandals are from the Métiers d'Art Spring 2026 collection. However, that didn't stop the three-inch heels from earning Garner's endorsement. Knowing her, a footwear collector with a penchant for hybrid pairs, she was drawn to their ability to give slingbacks the summer peep-toe treatment.

Garner's allegiance to Chanel dates back almost two decades. So, it's no surprise she sourced the French fashion house for another sleek accessory for the same look.

As a handbag, she chose a quilted $7,000 tote, lined with burgundy leather and featuring the signature interlocking Cs, from the same Métiers d'Art collection. Despite its autumnal color combination, Garner is already getting her money's worth.

During the Spring/Summer 2026 circuit, Chanel wasn't the only label to prove the It-shoe potential of slingback sandals. Miu Miu, Toteme, Dior, and more slashed the toe boxes off of ankle-hugging styles.

Now, everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Tate McRae is spending the dog days of summer wearing the hybrid shoe trend. Luckily for fans of the silhouette, Marie Claire scouted similar slingback sandals that don't require a trip to a Chanel flagship store.

Shop Slingback Sandal Heels Inspired by Jennifer Garner

Visen Anenden served as head chef to King Charles for nearly a decade, and he said that during his “phenomenal” role, he learned “a good lesson” about sustainability and organic cooking. Anenden, who shared that The King is “extremely interested in what he eats,” revealed that for the royals, food was one area where they could always call the shots.

Speaking on behalf of Heart Bingo Online, the former royal chef said that King Charles is “a real foodie.”

“He’s very seasonal, and everything comes from the estate,” Anenden continued, adding that The King “always wants to know where something has come from, so menus were very particular.” When the royals stay at Balmoral, for example, they would eat a different style of food than at Highgrove, where “it would be what you could source from the garden.”

“You really learn how the farm-to-fork aspect works, and it’s a phenomenal lesson for a chef,” Anenden added of The King’s penchant for fresh, local food.

The former royal chef revealed that despite having access to a bountiful supply of foods, The King and Queen Camilla both show restraint with their eating. “The thing with the royals is that they don’t eat a lot,” he shared. “It was always small portions. It’s never substantial, loaded plates at all, never.”

When asked why he thought that was the case, Anenden mused that it had to do with “control.”

“They’re very conscious of their diet,” he said. “It isn’t just them, but also lots of private households I’ve worked for—they all eat small portions. It can be to do with control. People like King Charles, because they have control over the food, that’s the only aspect of their life that they can control.”

As Princess Diana’s bodyguard, Ken Wharfe had his share of tough days protecting the late Princess of Wales. He recently told Marie Claire that she “didn’t always welcome” having a royal protection officer, but when it came to carrying out her royal duties, there was one major reason why Diana never backed out.

Wharfe, who served as Diana’s bodyguard from 1988 to 1993, shares that even when the princess didn’t want him around, she never actually refused protection. “I think possibly, on some occasions, if we'd had a difficult day the night before, she might have said, ‘Oh dear, you know, I can't cope with this. I don't want you today.’ But thankfully, that never happened,” he says, speaking on behalf of Casino.org.

Wharfe continued, “And I'll tell you why I don't think it ever would have happened. At that particular time, despite the unhappiness of her marriage, her commitment was to Her Majesty The Queen.”

He adds that even though Princess Diana's relationship with Prince Charles was falling apart, “She was in a position where she was loyal to the workings of the British Royal Family and would never let them down, despite her personal unhappiness.”

Even on days when she’d say, “I don’t think I can do today, Ken,” Diana would soldier on and carry out her commitments. Wharfe says he’d suggest, "Well, okay, you don't have to. What do you want to do about it? We can find a reason not to do it. You can be ill, or we can come up with some excuse.”

“But the answer would always be, ‘Well, I can't let my mother-in-law down,’” he shares. “So there was a real sense of duty on her part.”

Wharfe stepped down from his role in 1993, and he admits that he's not sure what would have happened if Diana had ever refused his protection. “Quite how I would have dealt with that, God knows,” he shares.

Neither Jennifer Lopez nor I have RSVP'd "yes" to Copenhagen Fashion Week yet. That's not to say we aren't watching the street style scene, waiting for the next Scandi-tested trend to shop. This weekend, while I sampled Bermuda shorts, Lopez looked straight off a Scandinavian Airlines flight in the white T-shirt alt that took over Denmark's capital last week: a lacy eyelet top. What's more, her Free People style is still available for purchase and retails for less than $50.

Longtime J.Lo fans know she usually heads to the Hamptons in August. This year, her go-to lightweight linen looks, airy maxi skirts, and raffia accessories appeared in California. For an afternoon stroll through the Malibu Country Market, Lopez styled the $48 Darling Dreams Cami from one of her go-to retailers for laid-back summer looks. Thanks to the style's pleated cotton poplin and scalloped lace trim, the look nailed CPHFW's leading shirt trend.

Continuing the wallet-friendly theme of Lopez's Sunday look, she paired the cami with LoveShackFancy's $295 light blue cover-up, which she wore as a semi-sheer maxi skirt. The tiered, ankle-sweeping cotton skirt doubled down on the romantic look with a smocked waistband and a peachy floral print.

The New York-based label, known for its summer dresses, isn't new to Lopez's travel rotation, either. The "Let's Get Loud" singer previously wore the label on trips to the Hamptons in 2021 and 2024 and, just last month, in Rome.

She accessorized the look with oversized sunglasses and a sold-out Valentino bag.

Similar boho-chic styles dominated the step-and-repeats outside CPHFW fêtes. Some show-goers even played with lace lining and cotton poplin cut-outs the Jennifer Lopez Way.

It didn't take this white top trend long to resurface beyond the confines of Copenhagen Fashion Week. Now that it landed in L.A., it's only a matter of time before shoppers kick white T-shirts to the curb. To partake in the end-of-summer trend, shop the lacy tops below.

Shop White Lace Tops Inspired by Jennifer Lopez

Set aside all preconceived patriotic notions you have about styling red and blue in the same summer outfit. Sure, the color combination thrives on the Fourth of July, but Anne Hathaway confirmed it's no longer reserved for barbecues or fireworks displays. The cool blue and strawberry red color trends gave her maternity jeans a red carpet makeover at The End of Oak Street premiere. I bet you didn't see shades this sleek at your local celebrations and parades.

To begin her fourth round of press tour fashion for 2026, Hathaway's longtime stylist, Erin Walsh, traded The Odyssey neutrals for bright, contrasting hues. The sleeveless, mock-neck halter top from New York-based designer Prabal Gurung exposed the actor's baby bump while the silk train cascaded to the ground and trailed behind her.

In addition to eye-catching design details, the style came in a cool blue that took over the Spring/Summer 2026 runways, including Ulla Johnson and Carolina Herrera. (Could the color double as a gender reveal for the soon-to-be mom of three?)

While working the red carpet, the Oscar winner revealed the rest of her fresh-from-the-runway color combination: The halter top was lined in a rich red. While the swatch matched her bold lip and peekaboo pointy pumps to a T, its cool undertones clashed (in the best way) against the icy blue base.

The red-and-blue duo elevated her Jenny Jeans from La Ligne (a celebrity-beloved brand, thanks to Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Pamela Anderson). It's no wonder the wallet-friendly denim made the cut: Even straight-leg supporters like Hathaway, Jennifer Lopez, or Selena Gomez have embraced the return of wide-leg jeans this season.

Being a brand ambassador for Bulgari, Hathaway completed the high-low look by frosting herself in diamond earrings, rings, and bracelets from the luxury jewelry brand.

Hathaway isn't the only style setter (or celebrity mom, for that matter) to pull off the red-and-blue look. Katie Holmes and Gwyneth Paltrow previously paired strawberry with aquamarine and baby blue, respectively. Celine, McQueen, Versace, Prada, and more also featured the pairing on the runways. Most recently, guests at Copenhagen Fashion Week picked up where Spring/Summer 2026 shows left off by embracing every shade of red and blue imaginable. Meanwhile, Fashion shows from Caro Editions and Henrik Vibskov proved the colors will return come Spring/Summer 2027, too.

If Scandi style at CPHFW has any say in the matter (and it certainly does), bright red and cool blue looks aren't going anywhere. That's not to say you have to wait until next year to sample them yourself. Peruse Hathaway-approved pieces in the trending colors now, below.

Scandinavia is the IYKYK location for trend spotting. Copenhagen Fashion Week may not be quite as big as the core four (New York, London, Paris, and Milan), but there are still brands like Stine Goya, Cecilie Bahnsen, and Ganni, who over the last decade have not only put Scandi style on the map, but have influenced the way a generation of women dress.

Traveling from runway show to runway show during the week, one thing I noticed was how interlaced the city's style is with what models are wearing. Some shows embraced quiet luxury with silky, monochromatic ensembles that easily translated for work-to-drinks dressing IRL. Others leaned into the classic, zany Scandi style, mixing colors and prints with abandon, but in a way that still feels easily digestible for the woman wanting to try it out at home. In fact, between shows, it wasn’t unusual to spot a Copenhagen resident on her bike dressed to the nines, though often finished with a pair of flip-flops (they’re all over the city).

I’m already starting my shopping for the trends I want to incorporate into my own wardrobe, long before the Spring 2027 collections hit stores. Here's a look at my wishlist.

Capri Pants

Perhaps because of the city residents' love of biking, pedal pushers are alive and well on the runways in Copenhagen. Cropped silhouettes, in both sleek, sporty fabrications and bold prints, appeared at shows including Opera Sport, Caro Editions, and Taus. While summer is still in full swing, it’s an easy trend to incorporate into your own everyday style, playing with proportion by layering them under a mini dress or oversized tee.

Sheer Layers

Sheer pieces are a choose-your-own-adventure trend, with the possibility to be as undressed or overdressed as you wish to be. On the runways, gauzy dresses and see-through overlayers were a look on their own, but also served as a playful final touch to tailored ensembles. One of my favorite takes on the trend was at Anne Sofie Madsen, where a sheer piece was worn, almost invisibly over a special collaborative tee with Nike. At home, gossamer pieces can add some textural play to a simple everyday look.

Picnic Core

From veggie filled baskets at Skall to bold checkered prints at Nicklas Skovgaard, to garden-worthy overalls, the collections drew inspiration from days spent outside. While cottage-core details were aplenty, the trend extended far beyond your already beloved nap dresses. Channel your inner farmer’s market visitor, and embrace the trend by trying a straw hat or lettuce-filled tote on for size.

Fringe

On the runway, touches of fringe arrived in many forms. Dramatic, floor-sweeping hems playfully dressed up more minimalist designs at staid labels like MKDT Studio, while bold beaded fringe appeared as an act of joy on the colorful runway at Mr. Larkin. Whether your personal style skews more quiet luxury, or you don’t shy away from prints and colors, adding a little fringe still stays true to your aesthetic. While I love fringy pieces with a western vibe, this season, I’m drawn to styles that are a bit dressier and dramatic.

Duchess Sophie is one of the hardest-working members of the Royal Family, and on Monday, August 10 it was announced that she’s been named the new patron of a charity that ties heavily into one of Prince Harry’s greatest passions.

Sophie will now be working with the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team (AFPST), and she hit the indoor slopes at The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead, England to celebrate the news. The organization uses snow sports to accelerate the physical and emotional recovery of wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans.

Through adaptive sports like snowboarding, alpine and nordic skiing, the AFPST helps gives participants “a renewed sense of purpose and independence as they work towards individual and shared goals”—a very similar mission as Prince Harry’s Invictus Games.

The Duchess of Edinburgh looked in her element as she skied alongside AFPST participants and learned more about how the organization has given military personnel and veterans an increased sense of community and purpose.

Prince Harry has been carrying out the same work through the Invictus Games, which will take place in Birmingham, England in July 2027. Although the U.K. will host a summer games, the organization held its first Invictus Winter Games in 2025, and with Sophie’s new role, it opens the opportunity for her to attend a future winter event.

The duchess's husband, Prince Edward, also has a strong interest in para sports as the patron of the British Paralympic Association, a role he's held for more than 20 years. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh have taken part in many of the Paralympic Games and traveled to the 2026 Winter Games in Italy, giving Sophie the opportunity to meet ParalympicsGB athletes ahead of her new role.

Unofficially dubbed the “Happiest Fashion Week on Earth,” Copenhagen Fashion Week has long offered a spirited prelude to the Fashion Four, with its mix of emerging talent, cult-favorite labels, and distinctly Scandi irreverence. Spring/Summer 2027 carried extra significance as the event celebrated the second half of its 20th anniversary, bringing together homegrown names, returning heavyweights, and a growing international presence.

New York’s Collina Strada became the first designer to participate in CPHFW’s new international guest program, bringing Hillary Taymour’s off-kilter whimsy to Denmark's capital. Meanwhile, Scandi powerhouse Ganni returned from Paris Fashion Week's calendar, where it has been showing for the past few years, and reunited with zero-waste textile studio Stem on a series of upcycled looks. By Malene Birger also came back to the schedule after a six-year hiatus.

On the runways, the mood was dreamier than in seasons past. Romance emerged through layers of gauzy, semi-sheer fabrics, eyelet details, and trailing dusters. At Skall Studio, the effect took on a pastoral feeling, with prairie-inspired layers, delicately boho dresses, boater hats, and straw baskets offering a refined (and Jane Birkin-approved) take on countryside dressing. At Anne Sofie Madsen, transparency and fluid layering made the mood feel more sensual. Even tailoring became lighter on the runway of The Garment, where feminine proportions and lace trims softened more structured silhouettes.

Still, Copenhagen did not abandon the charm and eccentricity that have made its fashion identity so beloved by fashion insiders. Peplums brought unexpected volume to the waistlines, and fringe and tassels appeared on hems, adding movement and playfulness to otherwise simple separates.

That push and pull extended to the palette. Familiar Scandinavian neutrals—optic whites, creams, sandy browns—provided a minimalist foundation, while saturated pinks, reds, and vivid blues added brighter counterpoints. Green, meanwhile, continued its ascent in color trends, with unconventionally pretty shades of chartreuse, moss, and other slightly oddball, frog-adjacent hues.

If last week's showcases are any indication of what’s to come in New York, London, Milan, and Paris in the next two months, Spring/Summer 2027 is shaping up to be lighter, brighter, and more ethereal. Ahead, the biggest trends from Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Whiteout

Forget a little white dress. For Spring/Summer 2027, Copenhagen designers made a case for dressing in white head-to-toe. Relaxed tailoring and flowy separates gave the non-color plenty of dimension, proving minimalism doesn’t have to be boring. The best looks played with texture, layering, and transparency, creating outfits that felt light, romantic, and made for high summer.

Fringe Benefits

Fringe was everywhere in Denmark’s capital, swinging from hems, trailing off accessories, and turning otherwise understated pieces into statement standouts. Tassels offered a similarly tactile effect, bringing Scandi minimalism with a swish to dresses, skirts, and accessories.

Capri Comeback

The divisive capri pant isn’t going anywhere. Copenhagen's biggest names continued to embrace cropped, calf-skimming trousers ranging from minimalist monochrome pairs to loud printed styles. After several seasons of oversized barrel pants and Bermuda shorts, the retro silhouette feels like a cheeky change of proportion.

Lovely Lace

Lace helped set the season’s soft tone, appearing as delicate trims, sheer panels, and full-on separates. Rather than feeling overly precious or Victorian, it was often paired with utilitarian pieces (like a leather jacket at Munthe), giving the traditionally feminine fabric a cooler edge. Call it romance with a rock 'n' roll flair.

Not-Your-Salad Greens

Green continued its fashion takeover, but Copenhagen largely skipped the pretty leafy shades or trendy mints. Instead, designers leaned into chartreuse, moss, algae, and other “ugly” tones. With their unexpected earthiness, these “gross greens” will electrify spring's looks.

Peplum Play

After years dominated by straight and oversized silhouettes, the peplum’s comeback gained more momentum in Copenhagen. Designers used flared waists to add shape to tops, jackets, and dresses in ways that were both sculptural and fluttery.

Softly Sheer

Transparency was one of Spring 2027’s strongest through lines. Sheer skirts, gauzy dresses, and barely-there layers offered glimpses of skin in an ethereal rather than overtly sexy manner. The trend felt wearable thanks to modest layering, relaxed proportions, and subtle embellishments that kept the look out of naked dressing territory.

Whimsy Waist

Designers weren’t content to simply cinch the waist—they decorated it. Cummerbund-like bands, peplum belts, and tasseled scarves wrapped around the midsection, turning the area into a focal point of the outfit. It’s a small styling hack with a big payoff, adding shape and visual interest without requiring an entirely new outfit.

Dainty Dusters

Long, trailing dusters brought storybook drama to some of Copenhagen’s most fluid looks. Worn over bustiers, dresses and billowy trousers and in fabrics ranging from lace to satin, the elongated toppers fluttered behind models and further exaggerated the season’s airy silhouettes. Bonus: These practical layers can double as outerwear in colder weather.

The iconic scene of Melanie Griffith hoofing it to her corporate job in sneakers and a skirt suit (and then changing out of them once she gets to her desk) in the 1988 classic “Working Girl” is an image we can hopefully enjoy nostalgically, but leave in the past. While dress codes in certain offices still remain pretty specific, most have embraced sneakers as an appropriate footwear to pair with otherwise stuffy tailoring and conservative skirts in 2026. With that said, it’s also important to set some ground rules: nothing explicitly sporty or exclusively for running, overtly chunky silhouettes might be a little too edgy for some conference rooms, and things that are too flashy with logos or branding should stay at home for weekend wear only. More streamlined silhouettes like suede retro joggers or straightforward leather low-tops are no-brainer options, and even more untraditional designs like ballet-or tae kwon do-inspired shapes, and even a loafer-sneaker hybrid, are all office-approved. All of the picks here are intended to accompany suiting (preferably on the baggier side if possible) and most dresses or skirts, but still let the office dress code be the boss when it comes to what feels most comfortable for the intended audience.

Sneaker trends are constantly evolving. Case in point: Hailey Bieber's unexpected endorsement of the jelly shoe sneaker hybrid, in a neon lemon and lime shade, no less. While Adidas Sambas have always been a firm favorite with It girls and celebs, they've been notably absent from recent trend reports. However, Kristen Stewart just confirmed there's a very good reason that Adidas Sambas are considered a classic sneaker style.

The Chronology of Water director was photographed in New York City on August 8 wearing silky pants, a white T-shirt, and an open shirt. For footwear, she opted for a pair of Adidas Samba Deco SPZL "Core Black" Sneakers featuring a Lucid Lime Green back panel and stripes.

Basically, if you were on the fence about investing in a pair of Adidas Sambas, this might just be the sign you were waiting for. Clearly, the classic sneakers really never go out of style.

Right from the start, Princess Kate was recognized for her smart fashion choices. In fact, the popularity of her style decisions led to the term "the Kate effect" being coined, to refer to items of clothing that immediately sold out following her endorsement.

Author Catherine Mayer recently released the book, Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles. An expert on royal women, Mayer speaks exclusively to Marie Claire about how Princess Kate's style choices will be remembered, and why she's so important.

"I write in the book about how Kate's fashion choices changed, from styles that immediately situated her in a time and a place to a more 'timeless' set of looks," Mayer explains. "These are not of course really timeless."

In fact, the Princess of Wales appears to be drawn to two particular decades when it comes to formulating her outfits.

"The silhouette of the dresses tends to resemble day dresses from the 1930s and '40s for example," Mayer tells us. "But they are fashionable while also conveying that she is, as Princess of Wales, part of a historical continuum."

Mayer continues, "Her genius is image-making."

In the same interview, the royal author notes that Princess Kate seems to be following in Queen Elizabeth II's footsteps, in some respects.

"There is some truth to the idea that Kate follows a model quite close to Elizabeth's in terms of letting images do the talking rather than expressing herself more verbally and freely," Mayer says.

The biographer continues, "That melds more easily with an institution that is meant to stay out of party politics and unite the populations it represents...rather than being divisive. But it doesn't mean that other models are automatically wrong."

As wife to the future King, Princess Kate is carving out an important career within the Royal Family. However, being a royal woman is no easy task, with press scrutiny and public opinion weighing heavily on the princess.

Author Catherine Mayer recently released her latest book, Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles, which explores the ways in which Princess Kate, Meghan Markle, Queen Camilla, Princess Diana, and Queen Elizabeth have been treated by the general public and the press.

Discussing how the Princess of Wales navigates her prominent royal role, Mayer exclusively tells Marie Claire in a new interview, "She is human and the projection on to her of perfection adds to the burdens she already carries as one of the most famous women in the world."

Mayer continues, "And that scrutiny is worse for royal women because it is their job to be seen."

By necessity, for the British Royal Family to survive, new people need to join it, despite the obvious downsides to taking on such a role.

As Mayer tells Marie Claire, "Not only that, but the only way the monarchy continues to exist or recruits new members is through marriage and reproduction. That appears to legitimize a closer interest in their love lives and bodies than other famous women endure. And such scrutiny is always worse for famous women than famous men."

In spite of the obvious difficulties associated with being a female member of the Royal Family, Princess Kate appears to be embracing the role, while firmly focusing on the future.

Throughout her life, Princess Diana was well-known around the globe. As a result, it's entirely unsurprising that she reportedly had a private meeting with talk show legend Oprah Winfrey, which led to a "friendly tug-of-war."

In his book A Royal Duty, former royal butler Paul Burrell opened up about Princess Diana's meeting with Oprah Winfrey.

Burrell shared in his book, "The princess was really nervous about meeting [Winfrey] because, she said, 'She is such a big name.' It didn't cross her mind that perhaps Oprah would be nervous too."

According to the former butler, Diana "made her typical confident entrance" to meet Winfrey. "'Sorry to keep you waiting, sorry, sorry,' [Diana] said," Burrell recalled. "I served lunch in the dining room and soon became part of the proceedings as conversation turned to America."

Sharing the private conversation, Burrell explained, "We love America, don't we, Paul?' the princess said. 'He goes there every year for a holiday.' Cue Oprah to the princess: 'So, would you ever consider living in the United States?'"

According to Burrell, he pitched in with a joke: "I would pack my bags and go and live in America tomorrow."

The butler continued, "I looked at the princess and winked. Oprah saw her opportunity. 'We could do with a butler. Why don't you come to Chicago and look after me?'"

As documented in his book, Burrell recalled Princess Diana bristling at the thought of Winfrey poaching her royal butler.

"The princess suddenly straightened in her chair," Burrell wrote. "'Look, Oprah,' she said, laughing, 'he's my butler and he's staying here.'"

Per Burrell, "It became a friendly tug-of-war all the way through to coffee: Oprah kept returning to it to embarrass me."

The joke apparently continued right up until the moment Winfrey left Kensington Palace.

"Just before she pulled away, Oprah opened the window, leaned forward and said: 'This is your last chance, Paul,'" Burrell shared. "The Boss stood beside me at the front step, threw a possessive arm round me and shouted out: 'Hey, he's mine—and he's staying here with me.'"

Luckily, the meeting reportedly ended in "laughter." Basically, Princess Diana and Oprah Winfrey appeared to develop quite the rapport during their alleged meeting.
