Launched in 2024, Nice Talk has become a weekly destination for women who want more from a podcast than surface-level chatter. Each episode, Ogunnaike sits down with fascinating women across entertainment, sports, and business to talk about how they got where they are, what makes them feel powerful, and the role played by their personal style.

Over nearly 70 episodes and two seasons, guests including Padma Lakshmi, Issa Rae, Coco Gauff, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph have opened up about building their careers, negotiating their worth, and the wardrobes that carry them through it all.

“Working on Nice Talk has been such a joy! As someone fair, blue-eyed, and blonde, I'll be honest—contouring has never been a part of my makeup routine. I'm even a little skeptical about bronzer. I instantly think of middle school makeup: cakey, laid on thick with harsh lines that look unflattering, and a tinged orange hue. Even though I am decidedly not a contour connoisseur, I jumped at the chance to ask pro makeup artists about their best-kept, A-list contouring tricks.

"I always say the easiest way to start with contouring is to start with one feature at a time," says professional makeup artist and founder of m.ph Beauty, Mary Phillips, who works with clients like Hailey Bieber. "Start with just your nose or cheeks or wherever you want—as you get more comfortable, it's easier to add on from there." Makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell, who works with Kelsea Ballerini, agrees, citing a trick she learned from another makeup artist, Katie Jane Hughes: "Really look at your face in the mirror and talk," she says. "This will expose your natural hollows in the cheeks, and you can start there."

What surprised me is that contouring is actually not as hard as it seems—and it can look incredibly natural. The formulas and pigments have gotten far more advanced, sure, but also the techniques and tips have gotten easier to follow, too—even for a contour novice.

Below, I used all their best tips to create the most natural, sculpted contour of my life.

Step 1: Prep The Skin

Everything—concealer, powder, highlighter, and contour—looks a million times more natural when your skin is prepped with a great moisturizer. "When the skin looks hydrated and smooth, it naturally looks good," says Phillips. "Then everything else just falls into place seamlessly."

Sewell agrees, noting you don't have to overthink it. "Just support the skin barrier in whatever way suits you," she says. I prep my skin by warming Bonjout Beauty's Balm all over—it's so soothing and nourishing, and my skin drinks it up, leaving it instantly plump, supple, and hydrated. Then I follow it up with a few drops of the Rhode Glazing Milk to add a bit of tact and sheen so the makeup adheres better.

Step 2: Color Correct

By color-correcting before you do anything else, you help ensure you're smoothing and evening out your skin tone. To make the process even more seamless, Phillips created this brilliant little palette, which has a color corrector, two shades of highlighter, and two shades of contour. It's all a part of underpainting, her signature technique of applying contour, bronzer, blush, and highlighter under foundation, foolproof. "Use the lightest shade in the palette with the small side of the dual-ended brush to color correct any dark circles or discoloration," says Phillips. "But remember that color correcting isn't concealing—so apply judiciously." Even if you don't want to use the rest of the palette, color correcting is still a crucial step to help your contour really pop, without ever looking too unnatural.

Step 3: Choose Your Contour

When choosing a contour product, Sewell says your skin's undertone affects how colors appear on your face. "It acts like a 'lens' that filters color or absorbs certain undertones of products," she says. To keep things simple and not overly complicated, she suggests looking for a formula that has strong cool (or gray) undertones for the most natural-looking contour. "You want to create 'shadows' on the face, and to do so you need a gray element to the formula to make it look as natural as it can," she says. Remember—you can always add a bit of warmth with bronzer and blush later on. (A good frame of reference is that bronzer is warmer in tone, and contour should be cooler.

Depending on where you contour, you can use a liquid, powder, or cream—but both Phillips and Sewell prefer creams for more dimension and depth. "A liquid is typically going to be more sheer, natural, and more like a tint because it can stretch and expand as you blend," says Sewell. "Creams are a bit more pigmented, [which] can do more to shape and sculpt because they're easy to blend but don't move around—you need it to hold its 'shape'."

Step 4: Sculpt At the Temples and Hairline

Both Phillips and Sewell say the biggest mistake in contouring is applying too much product right off the bat. "It’s important to work in thin layers," says Phillips. "That’s what gives the most natural, skin-like finish." Both Phillips and Sewell recommend starting your contour at the temple. "I love an outer temple snatch," says Sewell. "Use the contour to draw a diagonal line upwards from the outer edge of the eye, over the tail end of the brow, into the temple. This really helps define the eyes."

Phillips adds that, "By starting at the tail of the brow and brushing upward toward the temple, you create lift. Then bring it up along the hairline and around the perimeter of the forehead." As you go, you should softly buff and blend the contour with your brush or sponge so it's not totally blended to the point of being invisible, but there aren't super harsh lines.

Step 5: Chisel The Cheekbones and Jawline

Next you can add the subtle face-chiseling lift. Glide the contour along a diagonal line up to your cheekbones, blending to create shadowed depth. Chances are, you're probably applying your cheek contour too low. "It's all about working upward," says Phillips. "I like to keep everything slightly higher than you think—for example, on the cheeks, I hug just under the highest point of the cheekbone, not too low." Look for the natural dip of where your cheekbone sits and apply it right above. "Focus on lift more than depth," says Phillips. "So instead of dragging contour down the face, I place it strategically: under the cheekbone but diffused upward, into the temple, softly around the perimeter." While it may look harsh at first, Phillips assures us to trust the process. "Everything is blended out so there are no hard starts or stops," she says.

Step 6: Define the Nose And Add Highlight

To sculpt the nose, use a small brush or brilliant stick—like this one by Victoria Beckham—to sculpt up towards the brow. "You want to be very strategic because the placement matters," says Sewell. Then lightly buff it out to soften. "A small dense, fluffy brush gives you precision," adds Sewell. Bring lightness to the face (which helps add contrast to make your contour pop) with concealer or highlighter. "I start with the shadows of the face before moving on to where the light hits," says Phillips. "Highlight is what really enhances that lift—place it right under the contour on the cheek, between the brows, and down the bridge of the nose to bring everything forward."

Step 7: Apply Sheer Foundation Then Blend and Buff

Phillips signature underpainting technique means you apply a sheer (note—a sheer finish is crucial here) foundation over top to help blend out and conceal any lines from the contour. "The key is that nothing lives in isolation—the contour, highlight, and complexion are all working together underneath, so by the time foundation goes on, it’s just this seamless, sculpted skin," she says. "You shouldn’t see contour; you should just see a lifted, balanced face."

By layering a soft, sheer foundation over the contour, you're not covering everything up, but rather, blurring it imperceptibly. "That’s what gives that lifted, seamless, lit-from-within effect," says Phillips. "You’re not seeing harsh lines and heavy makeup—you’re seeing dimension coming through the skin." After you've layered a light foundation on, you can add more contour if you want (although I found this method left me with definition that looked super natural.) "You always can build, but it’s much harder to take away," says Phillips.

Step 8: Finish With Blush

My own tip for a look that’s both more natural and incredibly flattering, I dab blush on wherever the sun might hit (for me, it's a little on my nose and my cheeks). This helps bring it all together—the blush adds a little natural flush and melts in, so your skin looks like skin.

Putting together a skincare routine isn’t always easy, considering the endless stream of options that are currently flooding the market, but if there’s any one thing to know about taking care of your skin it’s that sunscreen is the most important product you can invest in. Most doctors and dermatologists would recommend that you apply sunscreen at least once every day to protect your skin from premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and most importantly, skin cancer. “It's the best anti-aging skincare product, period,” says board-certified dermatologist David Kim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York Dermatology Group.

That said, knowing that you need to wear sun protection is one thing, but understanding what’s on your product labels is another. All sunscreen labels include information, like "broad spectrum" or "SPF," that's crucial for determining which ones will best fit your needs, but if you find yourself getting a bit confused trying to decipher all of the acronyms, ingredient names, and special language, let this be your guide.

Ahead, three dermatologists break down how to decode all of the major numbers, letters, and words you'll likely find on any sunscreen label.

What Does Broad Spectrum Mean?

Any sunscreen you use should have “broad spectrum” printed somewhere on the label—it’ll usually be on the front of the bottle right in front of the SPF number, and it just means that the sunscreen actively protects against damaging UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) rays from the sun. “UVB rays are what cause sunburns and play a big role in the development of skin cancer,” says board-certified dermatologist Dara Spearman, MD. “UVA rays go deeper into the skin and are mostly responsible for premature aging. Think wrinkles and sunspots.”

Your skin is more susceptible to skin cancer, sun damage, signs of aging, and obviously sunburn whenever you’re not wearing sunscreen (and this happens even if you’re not directly in the sun), so wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen is likely to keep you safe from all of the aforementioned issues.

What Does SPF Mean?

Right next to the “broad spectrum” label, you’ll notice that your sunscreen has an SPF number that usually ranges from 0-100. This is called the sun protection factor, which according to board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD, refers to the product’s ability to protect your skin from UVB rays. It’s essentially supposed to help you understand how long you’d be able to stay in the sun before your skin starts to burn compared to how long it would take to burn if you weren’t wearing sunscreen. Say you walked outside wearing no sunscreen and began to burn within 30 minutes. “SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for your skin to burn than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen,” Dr. Spearman says.

Most dermatologists would recommend wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, since it blocks about 97 percent of UVB rays, but you can find plenty of products with much higher levels, and these are typically recommended whenever you’re spending an extended amount of time in the sun. Additionally, higher SPF levels do offer more protection from UVB rays, but the percentage jump isn’t as big as you might assume it’d be. “An SPF 30 product prevents about 97 percent of UVB rays from reaching the skin while SPF 50 prevents about 98 percent,” Dr. Camp says. “Higher SPF offers slightly more protection, but no sunscreen blocks 100 percent.”

Since it’s impossible to block 100 percent of UVB rays, it’s also recommended that you don’t spend too much time in direct sunlight. If you have to be outdoors for work or exercise, try wearing sun-protective clothing like hats, sunglasses, or long-sleeve shirts. If you’re spending a day at the pool or beach, try sitting under an umbrella.

Why Does My Sunscreen Say "Water-Resistant"?

A lot of sunscreens are water-resistant, though that’s not to be confused with waterproof. “There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen,” Dr. Kim says. “They're water-resistant or not, which means they're less likely to come off by being in the water.” A water-resistant sunscreen can remain effective while you're sweating or swimming, but only for between 40 and 80 minutes, depending on what the label reads. After that, you should reapply all over.

What Are the Active Ingredients In My Sunscreen?

The active ingredients in any sunscreen product are the ones that are “actively” protecting your skin from ultraviolet rays. Per Dr. Kim, they can be categorized into two types of filters: mineral and chemical. “There are two FDA approved mineral UV filters: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,” he says. “There are many different types of chemical UV filters including oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate.” Note: oxybenzone and octinoxate aren’t considered reef-safe, so if you’d prefer something that is, find something that doesn’t list these as the active ingredients.

Mineral sunscreens contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on the skin and reflect UV rays, which is why they often tend to give off a purple or white cast when applied to the skin. Dr. Spearman says that chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which the skin then releases, so these come in handy if you want a more invisible formula.

Some sunscreens are also hybrid products, meaning they contain both mineral and chemical active ingredients.

How Should I Be Applying Sunscreen Anyway?

Not every sunscreen label will give you direct instructions on how and when to apply, but in general, sunscreen should be applied every morning—even if it’s cloudy or you’re spending a big chunk of the day indoors.“Apply it 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours, or right after swimming or sweating,” Dr. Spearman says. A good trick for ensuring that you’re applying enough product to your face and neck is to use the two-finger rule. Take your middle and index fingers and squeeze a strip of sunscreen onto both fingers from the base to the tip, then massage in until it’s fully absorbed.

How to Overline Your Lips

As with all makeup trends, there are no rules, and no two people overline their lips for the exact same reason or use the same step-by-step techniques. Some people want to fake the look of lip filler without visiting a dermatologist. Others may simply want their lip colors to blend better with their skin tones. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to getting the perfect look for your needs, but use this as a general guide to inform your process.

Select the Best Lip Liner for Overlining

The best lip liners for overlining depend on your skin tone. These are the editor-vetted, professional makeup artist formulas that I recommend you pick up, based on where you land on the Fitzpatrick scale (a measurement of how much melanin is in your skin).

Take Note of Asymmetry

“Overlining can be used to exaggerate someone’s pout, but it can also create symmetry in places that need correction,” says makeup artist and founder of Glamourpuss, Alexandra DiBlasio.

People with uneven lips can use lip liner to even out the shape or size of their mouth. Analyze your lips in the mirror and decide whether you will want to draw a thicker overline on your right side, left side, or bottom lip. The goal is for the overall lip to look symmetrical, not the line you draw.

Start Slow With Your Cupid's Bow

I’ll tell you this right now: overlining your lips can get very wonky, very quickly, especially if you’ve never done it before. So if you’re just starting to learn, I highly recommend you opt for a more natural result. “For beginners, keep the exaggeration slightly around the cupid’s bow (that M shape at the top of the lip),” Luna says. Hold your pencil vertically and gently shade a little over each "hump" of your lip.

Continue Along the Upper Lip

“Connect each line of the cupid's bow to the natural, more voluminous areas on the side of the mouth," says Luna. Follow the line you create (not your natural lip shape), keeping in mind that you will likely be shading the space between the two afterward. You don’t want it to be such a large gap that it looks like you dipped your lips into a vat of color; however, properly shading the sides can provide a believable amount of volume that makes your lips look bigger.

Finish Up the Bottom Lip

The bottom lip is the most critical to a natural-looking overlining job. Unlike the upper lip, you really don't want to extend your bottom lip from side to side. Instead, slightly overdraw in the center (this will create a pouty appearance) and then extend the line up onto your actual lip and connect it to the outer corners. While everyone's face is different, overlining too much on the bottom lip can leave you with a downturned smile.

Last year, the Wicked press tour brought us endless pink and green outfits from stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the "holding space for 'Defying Gravity'" meme, and lots and lots of theater kid energy. And while it really felt like a moment in time, it's not over. Because what's that flying in the western sky?! Why its the Wicked sequel, which is bringing with it another Wicked press tour. Let's go!

Wicked: For Good doesn't hit theaters until November 21, but Erivo and Grande have already teased their upcoming press tour... which is also providing press for the film, creating a sort of conundrum about what defines the start of a press tour. Anyway, while presenting an unreleased-to-the-public trailer for Wicked: For Good at CinemaCon on April 2, the actors made a promise about the new press tour—a promise they already admit they might not be able to keep.

"We can't wait to get back on the road again," Erivo said, as reported by People. Grande added that they "already have our tissues packed," but Erivo said, "I promise less waterworks this time, but I'm not sure we can live up to that."

Grande then told the crowd at the event for movie theater owners, "Me neither, but you've seen it, so you get it, right? You cried." Erivo explained that now that everyone has seen Wicked, they should understand why she and her co-star were just so emotional in all those interviews. "You cried. Don't lie. We know. We saw," she said. "And we thank you, and we also forgive you for the hard time you gave us for doing it."

As a refresher: Last year's press tour saw Grande and W become overwhelmed with emotion in various interviews, whether it was about their bond with one another, their feelings about the themes of the movie, or their response to equally emotional interviewers. It all came to a head during an interview with Out magazine reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist, who told the pair that people were "holding space" for the song "Defying Gravity". Erivo and Grande appeared deeply moved and responded with such sincerity that people—many people on the internet—were both confused and astounded. A meme was born.

It's safe to assume that—even if Erivo and Grande live up to their promise of fewer tears—that their second press tour is still going to bring it when it comes to fashion and feelings. Hear me out: When your eyebrows are tinted, your makeup routine is quicker (put those brow pens away for a couple of weeks!) The best part is that learning how to tint your eyebrows at home is actually pretty easy.

As a professional brow stylist, Melanie Marris has been tinting her brows at home for as long as she can remember. "Tinting my brows made me feel so put together—it elevated my look even when I had no makeup on and, as a little hack, it made my brows look five times fuller than they were," she says.

We've already given you our picks for the best at-home brow tints, and now it's time to teach you how to tint eyebrows yourself. Ahead, Marris, along with Laura Kay, owner of permanent makeup clinic Laura Kay London breaks down how to use the best tints to achieve killer brows.

How to Tint Your Eyebrows at Home

Step One: Patch Test

Patch testing adds extra time to the process, but it's important to ensure your body won't react to the products you're using. Especially when they're going to be applied so close to your eyes.

"Simply apply a tiny amount of the mixed product to a small area like the inside of your elbow or behind your ear," explains Marris. "If there’s no reaction within 24 to 48 hours, you’re good to go."

I like to patch test in the crook of my arm. It's innocuous enough but not so invisible that I forget it's there and don't wipe off my product.

Step 2: Preparation Is Key

In the restaurant world they call your pre-cooking setup (tools out, veggies chopped) your mise en place. This is the same concept. Because you know what? When you have tint on your face and that timer starts counting down you're not going to want to run around looking for q-tips.

"To ensure the tint adheres properly, use an oil-free cleanser to remove any makeup from your brows. Your brows need to be completely dry and free of oils before you begin tinting," says Marris. "To prepare the tint, mix a pea-sized amount of the tint and cream activator in the dish with the application brush until you get a creamy paste. The paste will darken as you mix it."

Step 3: Apply Away

Next, you'll apply the already-mixed tint mixture to the first eyebrow, making sure you cover all the hairs you want colored.

"Blend the tint through the brow with a dry cotton tip for even distribution. Wipe away any excess tint outside your desired shape for a defined look and start the timer for your first brow," says Marris. "Repeat the steps for the second brow, starting a second timer once complete. This is a pro tip to give you the most even results." Aren't you glad phones have double-timer ability these days?

Step 4: Trust the Process(ing)

The processing time can make or break your look and it's arguably the most important part of your brow tint.

"When it comes to processing time, remember you can adjust the time based on your desired intensity," notes Marris. (I was using the brand's light brown brow tint, and left it on five to seven minutes for a soft brown shade.) "Once the tint has been processed, remove it with a damp cotton round, wiping towards the edge of your face. Avoid scrubbing back and forth to prevent removing the skin stain."

Step 5: Aftercare

As with so many beauty treatments, aftercare is crucial for getting the most wear out of your tint. To prolong your new brows, keep your brows dry for 24 hours and avoid sunbeds, saunas, steam rooms, and swimming pools. Also, avoid exfoliating and self-tanner around the brow area for the next two to three days.

Whether tinting at home or by a professional, Kay recommends not scratching the area and reapplying your tint every three to four weeks to keep your brows looking fresh. "Avoid rubbing, exfoliating, or oil-based products around the brows, as this will cause the tint to migrate, fade, or become patchy," she adds.

What Color Brow Tint Should I Choose?

"Clients often ask for darker brows because fuller, thicker eyebrows can help frame the face and enhance features," explains Kay. "Darker brows can also make the eyes appear more prominent. Overall, the look is bolder and more polished. Brow tinting is a common treatment because some people's natural brow hair is light or spare and tinting can help define the area and make your features stand out." (Hi, that's me.)

When it comes to choosing your shade, it's best to go lighter if you're new to brow tinting. I used Brow Code's Light Brown Tint Kit for a softer, more subtle look.

Risks of an At-Home Tint

As long as you follow instructions and keep the product out of your precious eyes, there are no major risks involved in an at-home tint—besides eyebrows that are darker than you anticipated.

"Brow tinting uses semi-permanent dye, so there is a risk if mistakes are made, your brows could look unnaturally dark, or appear unevenly tinted," notes Kay. "I’d say just be conscious of the amount of time you allow the stain to sit on the hair and skin and follow the instructions/directions thoroughly," Marris adds.

What Do I Do If My Brows Are Too Dark?

If you do end up with brows that are too dark, don't worry; they'll lighten up soon.

"Using either a micellar water or our tint remover on a cotton pad, simply begin to buff away the stain until it reaches your desired shade," explains Marris. "While the tint in the hair will remain, remember that it’s a semi-permanent color and will naturally fade over about a week."

I have quite an extensive piercing collection. I have everyday hoop earrings for my lobes and a few cartilage piercings that I accessorize with studs, so I often stack my earrings to upgrade my look from basic to edgy. And lately, I've considered getting a conch piercing to round out my collection.

"The conch refers to the center 'bowl' of the ear," explains Sarah Lacy, a registered nurse, and Associate Director of Piercing Research and Innovation at ear piercing studio Rowan. "Like the helix, this part of the ear comprises cartilage."

While piercing this area opens up a wide world of earring possibilities, it is also more sensitive and takes longer to heal than a run-of-the-mill lobe piercing. I spoke to Lacy and cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Mark about what to expect when getting a conch piercing, how to avoid irritation, and yes, if the piercing is painful.

What Is a Conch Piercing?

As Lacy mentioned, the conch is the inner "bowl" of the ear. Therefore, augmenting your earscape with a conch piercing creates a more balanced look that includes not only the outer sections of the ear (like the lobes and cartilage) but also the inner part.

However, the conch is made of cartilage, which is thicker to pierce than the fleshy skin of the lobe. The conch area is also prone to irritation for those who consistently wear earbuds, and it garners a higher volume of earwax. These circumstances make aftercare particularly important when you're getting your conch pierced. But rest assured, when you're flaunting your gorgeous collection of ear jewelry, it'll feel worth it.

What to Expect During a Conch Piercing

Whenever you get a piercing, you should be aware that you will feel a pinch. However, if you already have a piercing or two (or three or four), you may be better prepared for the conch than you think. "There is a misconception that the conch is more painful than other areas of the ear," says Lacy. "The cartilage of the conch is easy to pierce, and the discomfort is minimal." She admits, however, that physical pain is relative.

How to Care for a Conch Piercing

The skin around a piercing is sensitive for the first year, so treat it as such. Lacy recommends avoiding touching or sleeping on your piercing, which might cause discomfort. You'll also want to wear over-the-ear headphones, as added friction can lead to a hard bump or keloid scar. "If you must wear earbuds, make sure they don't touch your piercing, and clean them before each use to keep infection-causing bacteria away from your piercings," she explains.

The most significant factor when caring for a conch piercing is to keep the area clean. Personally speaking, I have four cartilage piercings, and I noticed that the ones I took good care of and cleaned religiously healed much faster. Lacy and Dr. Mark recommend cleaning the area twice a day with clean hands, avoiding ointments, creams, alcohol-based products, or hydrogen peroxide. The latter two, in particular, can over-dry skin and kill new cell growth, inhibiting healing. Be especially mindful to clean the piercing area after working out, swimming, showering, or sweating in order to prevent bacterial growth.

How to Prevent a Conch Piercing Infection

Dr. Mark recommends applying an antibiotic ointment twice daily for the first few weeks. Then, he says the best course of action is to clean the area using a piercing cleaning solution or soap and water. If you use a lot of hair products, be sure those don't contaminate the piercing area. "Keep the area clean and don't remove the piercing until it's completely healed," he adds.

Finally, minimize excess moisture in the area around your piercing, which can support infection-causing bacteria. Avoid swimming, whether in a pool or at the beach, or prolonged baths for the first few weeks after you get your conch piercing.

If the pierced area becomes severely inflamed, unusually painful, or infected, he suggests seeing your doctor, who can prescribe you a topical steroid cream.

How Long Does It Take for Conch Piercings to Heal?

Unlike lobe piercings, which take four to six months to heal, cartilage piercings, including those on the conch, require more care. "You can expect about a year for your conch piercing to heal," Lacy explains. "Some may experience faster healing, and others may take longer, and that’s perfectly okay. If you’re concerned that your piercing is not healing well, you can always check in with your piercer and your medical provider for guidance."

What's the Best Jewelry for a Conch Piercing?

Make sure you select hypoallergenic jewelry with a flat or tiny round backing that's made for the conch and cartilage. Lacy suggests avoiding hoops until after your piercing has healed fully, as this style may not be comfortable before then.

In a perfect world, I wouldn't ever use foundation. While the makeup staple certainly has benefits, I'm trying to embrace my natural skin, let my freckles and beauty marks shine through, and complete my routine in under five minutes. Lau likes wearing "lightweight and hydrating" products with multiple functions (think a light tint or SPF). Tinted sunscreens, tinted moisturizers, CC creams, and BB creams are some of the most popular options.

While a base is optional, you'll likely want to add in some additional complexion products to add warmth or brightness. "I like to warm up the face with a cream bronzer and some rosy blush to add some life to the skin," Lau says. If you're trying to stay away from cream makeup altogether, you can also opt for lightweight powder formulas, which are my personal favorite.

Then it's entirely up to you if you want to apply mascara, a brow product, or one of the best lipsticks.

The No-Makeup Skincare Routine

If you want your skin to appear clearer even without the aid of makeup, having a solid skincare routine is key. The somewhat inevitable process of developing jowls. If you've found yourself researching how to get rid of jowls—just for future reference—you're not alone.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Deniz Sarhaddi defines a jowl as "the area of laxity and fullness specifically along the jawline, between the chin and the angle of the jawline." She notes that people often mistake buccal fat pad fullness for jowls—or vice versa. (Buccal fat is actually higher up in the lower cheek.)

Jowls mainly form due to the natural aging process, with signs they're coming starting as early as your late thirties. By your forties and fifties, you'll likely see a greater loss of definition in the jawline, which continues to progress as you get older.

It bears repeating: This is a natural and normal process. "As we age, collagen and elastin production is greatly reduced and skin loses its elasticity and firmness, leading to sagging around the cheeks and jawline," facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Levine explains. To get anatomical, a weakening of the depressor muscles and ligaments in the lower face, paired with gravity, can pull the skin down and contribute to jowling.

Jowls aren't only formed because of the aging process: Other causes can include genetics, your lifestyle choices, and your anatomy. Many patients have reported sagging jowls following the usage of semaglutide medications as well.

Jowl-havers and future jowl-havers, take note: While this facial transformation is a part of life, it can be treated if you so choose. Keep reading to discover how to get rid of jowls and reduce your chances of developing them in the first place.

What Are Jowls?

Put simply, jowls are the saggy skin around the cheeks and jawline. The biggest cause of jowling is getting older, when skin loses its elasticity and firmness due to a reduction in collagen and elastin. Still, many other factors affect the formation of jowls: Genetics, lifestyle choices like smoking and sun exposure, and weight fluctuations can all play a role. Even your face's underlying anatomy and the position of your airway can make jowls appear more prominently.

Getting more technical, Dr. Sarhaddi says that jowls form in part because of anatomy. "Everyone has a ligament just lateral to the chin and in front of the jowl, the mandibular ligament, that doesn't loosen over time. Rather, the tissues behind this ligament loosen and descend over time, creating the jowl," she explains. Patients with a quote-unquote "strong jawline" develop jowls later in life than patients with more delicate jaws. The reason? "The strong bone structure is a bit of a cushion for facial aging and supports that descending tissue a bit better."

So yes, jowling is inevitable—although some faces develop more prominent jowls than others.

How Can I Get Rid of Jowls?

• Injectables: Botox and fillers can both camouflage jowls. "We can place neurotoxin along the platysma muscle, specifically the muscle that wraps around the jawline and neck region," shares Denisse Serrano MS, PA-C, a SkinSpirit Aesthetic Physician’s Assistant. However, it may not be a permanent fix. "I always tell my patients when they have 'graduated' from filler camouflage to surgical correction," Dr. Sarhaddi notes. "Continuing to put filler along the jawline in front of and behind the jowl, as the jowl continues to descend and inflate/get heavier, can give patients a bottom-heavy, square look to the lower face." That can eventually result in an unnatural, puffy look.
• Surgery: Serrano notes that, if your case of jowling is severe, surgery is always the most comprehensive form of correction. While minimally invasive surgery such as microliposuction along the jawline can do the trick on small jowls, a full face or neck lift may be necessary to fully sculpt your jawline.
• At-home prevention: Unfortunately, there's no surefire way to prevent jowls from forming—it's anatomical. You can, however, delay their onset. "Wearing sunscreen daily, using red light therapy devices and medical-grade skincare with peptides and antioxidants, as well as consuming ample Vitamin C and protein for collagen synthesis can help hold off jowling," Dr. Levine recommends.

Professional Treatments for Jowls

A wide variety of treatments are available to reduce the appearance of jowls. Your treatment plan will depend on the cause for jowling, the severity of skin laxity (i.e., loss of firmness and structure), and any other aesthetic goals you have. Remember, it's always important to be goal oriented when considering aesthetic treatments, as opposed to going for procedures willy-nilly.

"Typically, a combination of treatments is used to deliver results that look natural," Dr. Levine says. "Cosmetic fillers also have a lifting effect, while neuromodulators such as Botox can help relax muscles in the lower part of the face and neck, which reduces the pull. Fillers can also be used to give definition to the chin and angle of the mandible as well."

If your jowling is severe, a surgical facelift is often the best option, and you may also have to throw in some liposuction or buccal fat removal.

Injectables and Fillers

One way to disguise and help prevent jowl formation is injecting Botox into the platysma muscle, a sheet of muscle just under the skin in the neck that extends up onto the lower face. The goal is to get the muscle in the neck to relax up and under the jawline. This is often called a Nefertiti Lift, named for the queen of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt's sharp jawline.

"Additionally, strategically placed dermal filler that has a high level of gel firmness can be injected. This firm gel can target the jawline in order to mimic bone and create a more defined appearance," Serrano shares. With regular in-office procedures, like quarterly neurotoxin visits and annual dermal filler, Serrano says you can maintain a defined jawline.

Although it can help delay lower face aging by preventing the platysma muscle from pulling down or "bowstringing," Dr. Sarhaddi and Dr. Levine both note that Botox injections do not fully treat jowls. Instead, Botox is a preventative treatment that reduces jowling by relaxing the muscles that pull on the skin.

Face Lifts and Neck Lifts

So, is it time to consider a facelift? While it can certainly eliminate jowls, that's a question to ask your plastic surgeon.

If you and your doctor decide to go the face lift route, here's what you can expect. "In facelift surgery, a key to getting rid of the jowl is to completely disrupt that mandibular ligament, otherwise there will always be a hint of the jowl even if the face is lifted," Dr. Sarhaddi explains. Doctors sometimes choose to add a little volume with fat grafting where the ligament was, making the jawline look "nice and straight and cleaned up."

Facial Liposuction

Micro liposuction just along the jawline is a low-downtime option for treating small jowls, according to Dr. Sarhaddi. It can often be added on during a face or neck lift.

Skin Tightening

If you want to go the non-invasive route, Dr. Levine suggests a treatment like Ultherapy (which utilizes ultrasound energy) or Emface (which uses Synchronized RF and HIFES energies to simultaneously stimulate the production of collagen). Both "lift" tissue to contour the jawline.

Another option? A thread lift, which helps to reposition and tighten tissue, defining the jawline.

At-Home Treatments for Jowls

Sorry, gua sha devotees: There's no simple, over-the-counter treatment for jowls once they've formed.

"People mistake jowls for swelling or lymphedema and often think that gua sha or other at home devices will treat jowls," Dr. Sarhaddi says. "Once a jowl is present, treatment options are camouflage or correction." That's it.

You can, however, take steps to prevent them in the first place.

As shown by the many awards Oppenheimer has racked up this season, from the Golden Globes to countless critics' organizations, the film stands tall as one of the best drama movies of 2023. Murphy and Downey give career-best work in the film, with the former transforming over the course of the movie from a theoretical thinker on science and faith to a disillusioned man who has been forced to face the consequences of his involvement in the dawn of the nuclear arms race. If that subject doesn't sound like it would birth an entertaining story, then you're underestimating Nolan's ability to imbue even a closed-door legal hearing with impressive dramatic stakes. Also, the Trinity Test detonation sequence is a must-watch for anyone looking for a scene that will literally take their breath away.

What to Look For in Blue Eyeshadow

If you want your blue eyeshadow to really pop, you need one with plenty of pigment. Otherwise, you might end up with a wash of coolness that looks more sickly than starry-eyed.

According to makeup artist Jonet Williamson, a "true blue" (see: Violette_FR’s Yves Klein-blue shadow, Dieu) looks great on every skin tone. It's once you begin to explore the color wheel—take blues that lean more green or more purple as examples—that you'll want to consider your personal complexion.

"Blue greens like teal tend to look more flattering on warmer complexions, while blue violets like periwinkle look best on cooler skin tones," the makeup pro says.

Makeup artist Chynara Kojoeva agrees that blue eyeshadow suits every skin color. "It’s just about finding the right shade of blue for your skin tone," she says. Light skin is better suited to muted colors with light or baby blue undertones—a less is more approach. Meanwhile, "the brighter, the better" is the motto for deep skin tones. "Go with the blues that pop and stand out," Kojoeva recommends.

The shade can complement any eye color as well. “There’s that whole thing where people don’t like to think out the box too much. Or they don't want something to look seemingly too much out of their comfort zone," makeup artist Emma Willis says. "But I have to say, blue eyeshadow can go so well with so many different colored eyes."

Why Is the Blue Eyeshadow Aesthetic So Popular?

Williamson says blue eyeshadow always trends upward during the colder months—maybe it's our way of manifesting blue skies ahead?

"Blue is one of those colors that can be worn in the winter and spring, so during this time of year, I always expect to see more blue eye looks in different hues," she notes.

Still, there are specific trendsetters who've earned credit for reviving bright blue palettes. You'd be hard pressed to search "blue eyeshadow aesthetic" online and not find a still from the movie The Love Witch. The 2016 film featured an array of brilliant, bright shadow looks by Willis—most of them blue.

"We really wanted that sort of siren, ‘60s look. Big eyes with big makeup, thinking back to the movie stars of the late ‘60s," Willis shares. "With regards to the turquoise blue we landed on, the trend didn’t take off, in terms of the shadow, until the last few years. And then, obviously, Euphoria came on the scene."

Celebrities are also newly exploring blue eyeshadow's potential. In January 2024, makeup artist Kenya Alexis gave Keke Palmer a dramatic slate-blue eyeshadow look that left fans begging for more. Other recent celebrity co-signers include Selena Gomez and Julia Fox.

The History of Blue Eyeshadow

Strong blue eyeshadow can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt—Cleopatra was on Willis's The Love Witch inspiration board!—when minerals like lapis lazuli were utilized to create a vibrant hue. Makeup artist Erin Parsons has tried this out with actual lapis lazuli, a hammer, and a mortar and pestle—it works.

Centuries later, icons like Brigitte Bardot, Diana Ross, and Twiggy's makeup in the '60s and '70s once again contributed to the look's widespread adoption.

"I think blue eyeshadow is ultimate classic look that tends to make a comeback now and then, just like a leopard print trend in fashion," Kojoeva says.

Still, it's not all the same as it was. The shades of blue eyeshadow available have expanded vastly as color cosmetics have become more inclusive over the years.

In the '80s, Kojoeva notes, "It was all about deeper blues worn up to the brows." Then in the '90s and early '00s, starlets like Paris Hilton, Beyoncé, and Sarah Jessica Parker were obsessed with a "frosty, metallic wash" of blue. Today, we have all of the above—and some intense pigments made possible by recent beauty innovations.

How to Wear Blue Eyeshadow

There are so, so many ways to wear blue eyeshadow. You can go mod or more modern, subtle or monochromatic.

Williamson, for example, loves to see blues in different textures and tones used on the eye for a monochromatic look. Picture a light, shimmery teal shadow paired with dark navy/royal blue eyeliner, like Shiseido's Kajal InkArtist Pencil in "Gunjo Blue."

"It’s all about having fun and wearing it confidently," Kojoeva adds. "I personally love to use the blue color as an accent around the inner corner of the eyes or around the waterline. You don’t have to go all out to get a strong look."

To get started, Willis recommends prepping your lids with concealer for a "flawless, even canvas." Then, begin finger painting. If you're using a powder, make sure you have a mixing medium on hand to influence how the color reads and how long the pigment will wear.

“The best way to use any blue eyeshadows is definitely with your fingers," says Willis. "For general application—and to get that rich turquoise blue—you want to use your fingers to apply and get the richest, best pigment from the product. ”

While applying, you'll want to buff the shadow at the crease, slightly diffusing it out so there's no major transition of color. (You don’t want a sharp line.) Another note? In sticking with classic makeup rules, if you're going for bold eyeshadow, you should probably stay away from, say, a bold lip.

"I tend to go easy on blush and eyebrows, and stay away from bright lip colors," Kojoeva says. "Keep the eyelid nice and clean and just add winged dark brown or black eyeliner. Take a smudge brush or even your finger and apply blue shadow around the inner corner of your eyes. It will make your eyes pop instantly. If you wanna go extra, add corner lashes and, voila, you're ready."

But in the Spring/Summer 2024 collections, designers flexed the full range of fringe’s possibilities.

On Bottega Veneta's runway last September, models walked in all sorts of flouncy pieces made to move: leather two-piece sets with feathered trim, ball gowns boasting hems of shredded straw, and woven gowns covered in cheerful pom-poms. Prada also held fringe as a focal point, sending out skirts adorned with grommet-punched fringe and belts embellished with metallic strips reminiscent of party curtain decorations.

Even more designers in their spring lineups offered everything from floor-dusting car wash hems to shredded denim that sways in the wind. Hair-Thin Treads

If you squint and stay still, these styles might look like long fabric swatches. Upon closer inspection, you see that they feature hundreds of teeny-tiny, hair-thin threads. Burberry, Ferragamo, and Brandon Maxwell first called on this intricate technique in their seasonal presentations; right now, you can find it everywhere from tiered mini skirts to dramatic cape coats.

No matter if you’re a celebrity, influencer, or beauty editor, we all have days when we feel insecure about our skin. Can you tell us about your journey with plaque psoriasis?

It all started one day back in 2018 when I noticed three small dots on my calves. I didn’t think anything of it. I was grateful to have an answer but struggled to accept this new reality—not just because there’s no cure, but for me, as a Korean American woman, having beautiful, clear skin is everything. Something a lot of people don’t know, too, is that I also have an identical twin sister. I would stand next to her and compare myself to her, wondering what happened to me and why I was different. I just was heartbroken—it was an excruciating time for me.

How has plaque psoriasis affected your mental health?

The beginning was definitely the hardest. I stopped going out. I stopped meeting friends. I hated myself. But then I realized that when I would sit in my room and think that everyone hated me, that was the reality I was creating. But when I learned to love myself again—plaque psoriasis and all—that’s when things started to turn around.

Could you describe your journey to rebuilding your confidence and self-love?

I first stopped comparing myself to others and got comfortable in my own skin—and got comfortable with being naked, too. Every day, I prioritize activities like yoga, meditation, and walks outside because it helps me relax my mind if any self-loathing thoughts come in. I also tried to switch the narrative on the disease. So instead of hiding my skin, I took photos of myself, I got to know my angles, and I truly believe that I’m still beautiful with or without plaque psoriasis. I also find a lot of comfort in the online plaque psoriasis community because it reminds me that I’m not alone on this journey.

What’s your skincare routine like? What products have made a difference?

I love keeping a simple, effective skincare routine. In the morning, I wash my face and put on a gentle toner. At night, I use my prescription VTAMA cream, used for the topical treatment of adults with plaque psoriasis, to spot treat plaque psoriasis flare-ups, which happen occasionally. Antithetical to 'clean girl beauty' and inspired by the darkly glamorous women of Scarface, Casino, and The Sopranos (among other movies), the mob wife look is characterized by all-out opulence and maximalism. Loud animal prints, luscious (faux) furs, and flashy jewelry define the mafiosa’s wardrobe; bright lips and heavily lined eyes are her beauty staples.

Of all the ways to get in touch with your inner Connie Corleone, switching up your makeup is the lowest commitment. That said, it involves striking a balance between leaning into the aesthetic and ensuring the overall effect isn't too much. (No one wants to look like they're wearing a costume.) According to Victor Anaya, director of education and artistry at Bobbi Brown, finding that balance boils down to offsetting vampy, defined eyes with cloud skin and soft glam.

"The trend calls for a soft matte complexion, soft smokey eye, and velvet matte lip," he tells Marie Claire. "The focus is on defined eyes, sculpted cheeks, and a fuller looking lip.”

Mob Wife Lips

From deep reds to subtle nudes, most lipstick shades can channel head-of-the-table energy. Just remember the intended final effect: "The overall lip is a matte velvet lip," Anaya says.

Lips that can command a high-stakes meeting begin with a lipliner close to your natural color, but a few shades darker. "Emphasize the outer corners and cupid’s bow," the expert recommends. "Next, softly press in a matte crème lip color in the center and softly blend where it meets the lip liner." The makeup artist suggests Bobbi Brown's lip liner pencil in cocoa and the luxe matter lipstick in parkside for a mob wife lip that will also last all day.

Mob Wife Eyes

When channeling your inner mob wife, "Eyes are the focal point," Anaya says. They're soft, smokey, and defined, like Adriana la Cerva's smolder on The Sopranos.

Anaya recommends starting with a rich, jet black liner to build definition around the eye, using a small pencil brush to blur and defuse. Next, add a mid-toned smokey brown shadow—Anaya's preferred shade is Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in sand dune—over the liner and onto the lid, blending and blurring the edges with a blending brush. Finally, apply a few coats of volumizing mascara, plus extra liner to frame the eye.

Don't forget the brows: Anaya suggests building definition with a brow pencil and setting with a soft wax.

Mob Wife Face

On one end of the viral makeup spectrum, there's the strong contour that ruled beauty from 2016 onward. On the other, there's the dewy, natural complexion of the "clean" aesthetic. Where does mob wife makeup fit in—and which products are best for the mafiosa face?

Anaya says a Ginger McKenna-like complexion has a soft, matte finish. Bases like Bobbi Brown's Skin Long-Wear Foundation can prime your mob wife canvas. "It’s perfect for this trend because it self-sets to a modern matte finish," the expert explains.

To apply, Anaya recommends sculpting the parameter of the face with a soft bronzing powder and finishing with a soft pink blush on the high point of each cheek. (Bobbi Brown Pot Rogue in powder pink is one of his favorites.) Add a touch of concealer under the eyes to brighten, lift, and define.

Misalignment of financial priorities among Gen Z and millennials is causing friendships to disintegrate across the board and driving a phenomenon known as “FOMO spending,” aka spending money you don’t have in order to keep up with your friends. According to a recent survey, More than one-third (36%) of Gen Zers and millennials have a friend who drives them to overspend, which can understandably take a hefty toll on friendships. Luckily, our friends at Credit Karma have done a deep dive into this dilemma and are here to assist. We tapped Courtney Alev, the consumer financial advocate at Intuit Credit Karma, to get the scoop on how to combat this issue. Her role is rooted in helping Credit Karma’s members make sense of their full financial picture and make progress against their financial goals. Our first question for her: What is the biggest issue with FOMO spending, and how can one resolve it? Her answer was lengthy but insightful. “Spending money you don’t have in order to keep up with friends—or worse, strangers online—can lead you to take on debt, which can cost you a lot of money in interest fees and prolong the time it takes to reach your financial goals,” she said. She also referenced some pretty staggering data: “A recent Credit Karma survey found that 76% of Gen Z and 69% of millennials have gone into debt as a result of FOMO spending, which is a dangerous consequence.” Read the rest of the interview below.

MC: Do you have any tips for how to set financial boundaries?

Courtney Alev: Be open and honest about your financial situation. It’s no secret that talking about money can be awkward, especially with friends and family. We’ve all been there—it’s easier to keep your concerns to yourself when you’re in the moment and everyone is having a good time. But in order to avoid overspending or potentially resenting your friends, these conversations can be necessary. Other friends might even be feeling the same way you are and appreciate the opportunity to set expectations as a friend group. It’s better to have these conversations before you RSVP for that group dinner or that bachelorette trip so you don’t overspend or feel pressured to pay an amount you’re not comfortable with. 

Set a limit for yourself. In addition to having a larger conversation about money, it’s okay to speak up about your spending limits. For example, if your friends are planning a trip, let them know the maximum amount you’re willing to spend before they start booking flights and hotels. The more prescriptive you are, the better. Sharing your budget with your friend group can also make it easier to opt out when you don’t have the funds.

Don’t be afraid to say no. It’s easier said than done, but try not to feel pressured to participate in expensive outings just because your friends want you to. At the end of the day, it’s more important to do what’s best for you and your finances. Aim for quality time and quality experiences rather than taking part in every single costly event. 

Factor your social life into your budget. It’s all about balance. You’ll have to say no to some things, but not everything. The key is to avoid spending money you don’t have, and if you can put aside money for entertainment and travel, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy those experiences periodically. Take a look at your budget to see what you can move around to set aside money in the “fun” category. It’s also always a good idea to plan as far in advance as possible so that you can save up more over time. If you’re not sure where to start with budgeting, we recommend allocating 50% of your income toward your needs (such as rent and groceries), 20% toward your financial goals (such as saving an emergency fund or paying down debt), and the other 30% for discretionary or fun expenses.

MC: How do you recommend using Credit Karma to help you spend and save wisely?

CA: Changing how you save may help change how you spend. Start by creating a dedicated high-yield savings account with Credit Karma Money, where you can save for specific items and experiences with friends and where your money can earn interest and grow over time. You can also track your transactions via Credit Karma’s Net Worth feature to reflect on your recent purchases, determine if they were “worth it,” and use those insights to make smarter spending decisions. 

A dedicated savings account can help you avoid spending money you don’t have, and it can keep you honest about how affordable something actually is. Let’s say you’re saving for a weekend away with friends. If you realize that you don’t have enough money saved by the time you’re booking your travel, that may be a warning sign that a vacation isn’t the best move financially at the moment and that you need to keep saving.  

And as you’re saving for something specific, name each of your savings accounts. Instead of putting money into “savings,” you’ll be contributing to your “fun fund” or “vacation account.” Knowing you’re working toward something specific may make it easier to contribute regularly and will help you avoid withdrawing from that account for anything else.

You can supercharge your savings by keeping your cash in a high-yield savings account. Interest rates have been relatively high for the last several months, and your savings can earn interest and grow over time. Accounts like Credit Karma Money are free and secure.

How to Watch 'Poor Things'

Poor Things is currently available to own digitally on platforms including Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. It was released on digital platforms on February 27, three months after its nationwide theatrical release on December 22, 2023. Per Decider, the film will become available to rent on March 12, the same day of its DVD/Blu-ray release.

When will 'Poor Things' arrive on streaming?

Per Variety, Poor Things will arrive on Hulu on March 7, 2024. Ahead of the announcement, we already know which streaming platform would host the film, as both its distributor Searchlight Pictures and Hulu are owned by Walt Disney Studios. The March 7 release also means that Poor Things will hit streaming just three days before the 2024 Oscars, where its nominated for 11 Oscars, including best picture, director, and lead actress for Emma Stone's performance.

Look alive, entertainment fans; the Golden Globes are just days away! The awards show is kicking off the 2024 red carpet season with some big changes this year, including a switch to a new network and the loss of its original voting body. For better or worse, the Globes are a major event along Hollywood's awards season schedule, as it combines the year's biggest films and movies into a jam-packed, famously boozy ceremony. Among this year's top film nominees are, of course, Barbie and Oppenheimer, along with Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Past Lives, and The Holdovers. On the TV front, Succession's final season received the most nominations of this year's shows, followed by The Bear, Only Murders in the Building, and The Crown. Comedian Jo Koy is set to host, becoming the second-ever Asian host in the awards' history.

The Golden Globes will air on CBS on Sunday, January 7 at 8 PM EST/5 PM PT. What was the Golden Globes' controversy?

It's highly likely that the 2024 ceremony will include a good amount of jokes about the Globes' loaded history. For anyone in the dark, a quick summary: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization which founded the Globes, faced backlash and intense scrutiny in 2020 after a series of reports that the group lacked diversity (including not having a single Black member) and only existed to give its 87-member body preferential treatment from studios. The award show broadcast was canceled in 2022 in the wake of the news; an untelevised ceremony took place that year, with the primetime show returning to NBC in 2023. Then on June 12, 2023, the HFPA dissolved and the awards were relaunched as a for-profit organization, with the broadcast making a jump from NBC to CBS for this year.

On Monday, December 18, the 35-year-old walked the red carpet in Los Angeles to launch her Fenty X Puma Creeper Phattys shoe design. In a memo for the evening, Rihanna promised "fun!" Her look, complete with a fuzzy purple jacket and matching eye makeup, certainly delivered.

The eyeshadow was the creation of Rihanna's regular makeup artist, Priscilla Ono, who (naturally) used Fenty beauty to achieve the look. Commenters on a post published by Ono were enchanted by the lavender color, relating the style to both Prince and old eras of Rihanna's career. "The eyeshadow is giving me 2023 'What’s My Name' music video purple eyeshadow vibes," commented a fan. "Her eyeshadow," added another, alongside a heart-eye emoji.

Swift showed up to the Kansas City Chiefs v. Green Bay Packers game in the cutest, boldest bright red teddy coat by Stella McCartney (which is sadly sold out), worn over a simple black mock-neck shirt, a pleated skirt, and black leather over-the-knee boots by Stuart Weitzman.

In April of this year, fighting broke out on the streets of Khartoum, Sudan between supporters of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and supporters of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemeti). The two had been leading Sudan's Transitional Council, which was formed in 2019 with the intention of eventually turning power over to Sudanese civilians after a decades-long dictatorship led by Omar al-Bashir. Al-Bashir, who'd ruled Sudan since overthrowing a democratically elected government in 1989, had a brutal reign that included genocide in the western region of Darfur; human rights violations including mass killing, forcible transfer, and mass rape; and the Sudanese Civil War, which led to a partition between Sudan and South Sudan in 2011.

Now, history is repeating itself. The Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Dagalo, have been engaging in all-out warfare across the country. Burhan-ordered air strikes have devastated cities and villages, while RSF forces have burnt down entire villages, robbed Sudanese people attempting to leave, raped women en masse, killed tribal leaders, and kidnapped civilians, in addition to war crimes including torture and denying people access to food, water, and essential supplies. Those who are at the greatest risk are non-Arab, non-Muslim minorities, who have been targets of bigotry for decades, particularly as a result of British-backed colonialism and the conquer-by-dividing strategy of Omar al-Bashir.

Since April, over 5,000 people have been killed in Sudan and over 12,000 have been injured, while 2.32 million have fled to neighboring countries and 2.2 million have been internally displaced. Those who have fled to neighboring Chad, South Sudan, Eritrea, and Egypt are often met with a lack of shelter, devastating poverty, and, in many cases, further violence. At this time, it's essential to uplift Sudanese voices and to lend support to those who are in dire need of the basic means for survival. Below, a list of organizations that are on the ground in the region providing essentials for those in need.

Islamic Relief Worldwide

Islamic Relief Worldwide is a well-established, robust organization that has provided substantial relief in emergencies all over the world, having been active in Palestine, Ukraine, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and elsewhere. They've been active in Sudan since the 1984 Western Sudanese famine, and have provided emergency healthcare, food, water, and sanitation, in addition to supporting long-term initiatives like peace-building, education, and women's rights. Now, they are active in Blue Nile, Darfur, Khartoum, Kordofan, Kassala, and Gedarif. They support 26 health centers across the country, are working to decrease the rate of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across the region, and are even supporting refugees who have fled to South Sudan. Doctors Without Borders

Doctors Without Borders is currently active in 11 out of 18 states in Sudan, providing emergency care—essential during this outbreak of unspeakable violence—along with long-term medical support. Their ongoing efforts include reproductive care, water and sanitation support, mental health care, nutrition, and vaccination. Consider supporting them.

UNHCR

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, is active in Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad, and is committed to helping refugees who have been displaced by the conflict. They are especially active in providing shelter for refugees and in preventing gender-based and sexual violence. Consider donating to them.

UNICEF

UNICEF has long advocated for human rights worldwide, with a particular focus on the rights and safety of children. This is particularly important in the case of Sudan, where vulnerable areas of the country like Darfur have seen their hospitals, water supplies, and schools razed to the ground. You can donate to their efforts, which focus on education, policy advocacy, health, and child protection.

Refugees International

Refugees International is a non-governmental organization originally founded in 1979 to advocate for the rights of refugees in Southeast Asia. Now, they're active all over the world, including in Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad. They raise awareness of international refugee crises, advocate for the rights of refugees, and run field missions to investigate and meet the needs of those impacted by displacement, climate change, and violence. Mercy Corps

Mercy Corps has been active in Sudan and what is now South Sudan since 2004, and focuses on providing those who are displaced with clean water, hygienic products, and medical support. For the last twenty years, they've both responded to emergency situations like the one occurring now and have providing the countries with long-term support in the form of agriculture, peacebuilding, and climate adaptation programming. Operation Broken Silence

Operation Broken Silence is devoted entirely to the Sudanese people. It partners with carefully selected local partners to promote childhood education and accessible healthcare. The organization is active in the Blue Nile, Nuba Mountains, and Darfur regions, which are most vulnerable to violence because they are populated largely but ethnic and religious minorities. Per its name, Operation Broken Silence also empowers Sudanese people and promotes peace in the region by facilitating Sudanese storytelling. You can contribute to their cause.

International Rescue Committee

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been active in Sudan since before this year's civil war, but it's recently increased its efforts in the area dramatically. They've reported that in the country, especially in the Hantoub and Banet regions, Severe Acute Malnutrition rates have risen by 300 percent and 163 percent, respectively. Thus, the IRC has established a Khartoum office to respond to immediate needs; created health, water, and sanitation services in Khartoum and in Tunaydbah; opened a field office to support refugees; and is supporting medical campaigns to prevent Covid-19 and polio. Oxfam International

Oxfam International has been working in South Sudan for several years, and is now focusing on what it is calling "one of the world's worst food crises," which it says puts over 7.1 million people at high risk for extreme hunger and starvation. Currently, they're working to provide refugees and civilians with access to safe and clean food and water (including livestock, agricultural tools, and fishing gear for sustained food access). They're also providing cash support, food vouchers, canoes for people who are sheltering from conflict on small islands, and hygienic supplies. You can donate via Oxfam America.

Operation Broken Silence

Sudan Relief Fund specializes in supplying the people of South Sudan with food, clean drinking water, hygienic products, clothing, and shelter. They have ongoing partnerships and projects in hospitals, leper colonies, orphanages, schools, midwife training programs, refugee camps, and more. You can donate to them.

Save the Children

Save the Children, per its name, focuses its efforts on aiding children impacted by crisis. In Sudan, they are working to fight food and water insecurity among refugee populations and to mitigate the risk of sexual violence that women and girls face—particularly as they are fleeing south. You can donate.

No matter your hair type, you've likely dealt with a lack of volume at some point or another. Whether it's your hair is straight, your curls are weighed down, or you didn't have time to thoroughly wash your strands, lank locks tend to hit when one least expects them to, creating a need for volumizing hair products like shampoos and conditioners, leave-ins, and stylers.

On the other hand, she says, "If you are wearing something with large shoulders or an over emphasized skirt, maybe think about complementing the look with less volume in the hair."

But how do you achieve voluminous locks without resorting to potentially damaging methods like teasing? Below, Perea dishes on the best practices to keep your hair looking full and flouncy.

Enhancing Hair Volume

While weighed down, lifeless locks may seem easy to fix at first glance, in reality, bringing volume back to your hair can be somewhat challenging. This is because the issue can come from a number of sources, which means that the first step to combatting limp hair is uncovering its cause.

"So many factors can lead to thinning, limp hair," agrees Perea.

Below, she lists best practices for ensuring that your hair looks healthy and voluminous.

Take Care of Your Overall Health

As with any beauty woe, your hair's appearance begins with your internal health.

"Smoking and a poor diet can lead to an overall appearance of sad hair," says Perrea, which means a smoke-free lifestyle, healthy eating (protein and collagen are key), and plenty of hydration are the first step anyone should take to combat lackluster hair. For an extra boost, you can even consider hair vitamins, which are formulated to foster hair growth, retention, and thickness from within.

Use the Right Tools

Overall health is paramount to a healthy appearance, but there's still more to ensuring your hair is as voluminous as possible.

"As always, thinking about what wet products, hot tools, styling tools, and sleep prep is very important," advises Perrea. "Consider making sure that the shampoo and conditioner, post-shower wet styling products, heat protectants, the way you brush your hair out, the way you sleep, and how you tie your hair out of your face are all aligned with keeping your hair looking full and healthy and therefor leading to a more voluminous appearance." More specifically, she says, "I always encourage my celebrity clients to use light weight heat protectors, make sure to sleep with nonabrasive pillowcases, and use non breakage styling tools (i.e., be wary of elastics that can lead to breakage and consider a nylon covered hair pin)."

The way you use your styling tools matters as well. Perrea instructs, "Blow dry with your brush pulling straight up instead of horizontal or towards the floor, and let your hair cool before letting it drop from the brush. This will encourage style memory."

Use the Right Products

"Keeping your overall hair health in check will always lead to the look of voluminous hair, but you want to make sure you are using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner," says Perrea. Furthermore, she stipulates looking for "a volumizer that is light weight so that it won’t weigh down your hair."

In terms of what to avoid, she warns, "You want to avoid anything with heavy silicones or oil, as that will add to the weight of the hair and pull the styling work you did down."

Of the thousands of runway shows I've seen as a fashion editor, only one has felt like a true mirror to my personal style: Miu Miu Fall 2023, particularly for its leggings outfits. The styling felt like an honest representation of a slice of life—and it was quintessential Miuccia Prada: insouciant, eclectic, and cool.

In the seasons since, I've found that Miu Miu isn't alone in celebrating the ease of the errand-running staple. Katie Holmes is reviving a stirrup leggings trend, while Kendall Jenner up-styles her $100 Commando pair with The Row separates that total well over $10,000.

The spring 2025 trends seen on the recent runways also desmonstarte how to wear leggings with an undeniable polish. At Ferragamo, Maximilian Davis gave the form-fitting bottoms the balletcore treatment via leotards and lace-up pointe shoes, while Chloé's knit leggings, ruffle blouses, and chunky gold jewelry embodied modern bohemia. An outfit in the same head-to-toe hue will consistently, without fail, deliver an impact. Toteme called on cream and showcased just how striking the subtle neutral can be by teaming off-white leggings with a suede jacket, and a gauzy turtleneck top. Here, Schiaparelli presented its signature surrealism as accessible, not avant-garde. Over the last week, the Hawaiian island of Maui has been devastated by wildfires in what is considered one of the state's worst disasters of all time. Dry weather on the island, exacerbated by climate change, resulted in a deadly situation when coupled with low humidity and strong winds from Hurricane Dora, a category four storm raging hundreds of miles south of the Hawaiian islands. These conditions have led to wildfires that have displaced hundreds and left over 11,000 people without power or telephone access—meaning that even the most vulnerable can't call emergency services if they need them. The fires have also destroyed hundreds of buildings, particularly in the historic city of Lahaina, which was once the royal capital of Hawai'i. Most tragically, over 1,000 people remain missing, and 55 have been reported dead—a number that officials say is a tremendous undercount, considering they have not yet checked the interiors of buildings for victims.

Cut off geographically from the rest of the United States, the island is grappling for resources including food, shelter, clean water, and medical attention for survivors. Furthermore, the state's infrastructure is overwhelmed by the sudden, meteoric rise in demand for services, and they need all the help they can get to take care of victims' immediate needs. 

Below, organizations that are accepting donations so that you can help Hawaiian residents fight the fires, survive, and rebuild. 

Hawai'i Healthcare Emergency Management

Hawai'i Healthcare Emergency Management (HHEM) is a non-profit devoted to addressing the health needs of Hawaiians and increasing the resiliency of the state’s healthcare system. They are entirely dependent on federal funding, which has been cut by over 60 percent, and are therefore in dire need of support—particularly since the healthcare system is currently overwhelmed with a rising death toll and increasing reports of smoke inhalation and burns. You can donate to HHEM so that they can replace expired equipment, maintain their resources, and purchase more in order to meet victims' needs. 

Aloha United Way

Originally known as the United Welfare Fund, the Aloha United Way was founded in 1919 as a means of uplifting the Hawaiian community, supporting local businesses, and leveling financial and educational playing fields so that all Hawaiians can have a more equal opportunity to succeed. The organization also responds to emergencies such as natural disasters, and at the moment is funneling all its efforts into helping those impacted by the wildfires in Maui. You can support their efforts.

Hawai'i Community Foundation

Founded in 1916, the Hawai'i Community Foundation focuses on empowering the Hawaiian community through initiatives such as scholarships, investment in health and medicine, emergency response, preservation of local arts and culture, and more. In the wake of the fires, they've launched the Maui Strong Fund, which is focused on rapid response efforts so that those impacted by the disaster can obtain food, clean water, shelter, financial assistance, and more as soon as possible. The foundation is working closely with the Maui community and with government leaders in the area to keep up with the quickly evolving needs of those affected. You can support them by donating.

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is one of the most well-known emergency response organizations in the United States, with more than 600 chapters throughout the country dedicated to disaster relief, blood donations, first aid training, and support for vulnerable populations around the world. Right now, they are taking calls from Hawaiians in need and are working with local partners to provide immediate assistance. As part of their Hawai'i Wildfire Response plan, they are also in the process of deploying over 150 additional trained responders to help victims survive, thrive, and rebuild. Mercy Chefs

Over 271 buildings in Maui have burned down over the course of the fires, which means that countless people have been stripped of their access to shelter, food, and clean water. Mercy Chefs is devoted to providing meals to those impacted by disasters around the world, and is currently on the ground in Maui, feeding both victims and emergency workers in the area. You can contribute to their efforts online, bearing in mind that any donation goes a long way—a $50 donation provides 14 meals to those in need, a $70 donation promises to feed 20 people, and a $1,000 donation provides a whopping 350 meals.  

Maui Mutual Aid Fund

The Maui Mutual Aid Fund has cropped up in response to the wildfires, and is currently focused on helping the most vulnerable residents of the area, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and people who are underinsured or who lack insurance. You can donate to their verified PayPal. 

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement

Like all indigenous peoples in the United States, native Hawaiians are often marginalized on their own land. Because of structural and historical inequalities on the island, they face higher levels of poverty and less access to safe housing and robust education. For instance, in Oahu, native Hawaiians make up over half of the homeless population despite comprising only 10 percent of the general population. To counter these alarming trends, The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement is devoted to the professional, financial, and educational advancement of native Hawaiians, providing scholarships, loans, financial assistance (particularly when it comes to housing), and professional and vocational training programs. They also provide emergency relief during natural disasters. Global Empowerment Mission

Global Empowerment Mission was formed after the devastating impact of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, and is devoted to delivering "the most amount of aid, to the most amount of people in need, in the shortest amount of time and with the least amount of costs to [their] donors." Another well-known organization that provides international aid, The Salvation Army balances a variety of priorities, including combatting homelessness, supporting the LGBTQ+ community, fighting human trafficking, supporting victims of domestic abuse, and more. Their disaster relief efforts have also spanned the globe, aiding everyone from refugees to those rendered homeless after natural disasters. Maui Humane Society

The Maui Humane Society is always devoted to rescuing animals from unsafe situations and finding them loving homes, and they're currently all-hands-on-deck to help those impacted by the wildfires. I’m a born-and-raised New Yorker, so wearing all-black is practically in my blood. While my mom loved to dabble with a colorful piece now and again, I grew up watching her wear the chicest little black dresses—she was the coolest mom in the pickup line. Now that I’m a little older, I find myself reaching for an all-black outfit whenever I don’t know what to wear. This might be an out-of-season opinion, but wearing all black is one of my favorite summer work outfits. 

I love wearing my black jeans, black sneakers, black ankle boots, and black dresses just as much as the next person, but I still want to look like I have a bit of a personality when I get dressed in the morning. Because I’m always interested in adding a little bit of *spice* to my mostly-black wardrobe, I tend to look towards the runway and my favorite street style stars for inspiration. Wearing one color all over can feel a little boring, but I’ve found that playing with textures and proportions is the key to making even the most simple ensembles feel a little more elevated.

Keep It Simple

I know this sounds simple, but wearing jeans and a black T-shirt or top is always a good idea. Not only does it work for just about every single type of event, but it's so easily elevated. You can go for a black tube top with a pair of high-waisted jeans on a night out, or wear an oversized tee with a pair of trousers for a trip into the office. At Y/Project for Fall 2023, a bustier-style top was styled with baggy jeans. At Rokh for the same season, a cut-out strapless top was paired with washed-black denim for a bit of subtle contrast. 

Sheer Excitement

The sheer trend is still going strong, but you don't need to bare it all to keep up with the trend. Try going for a sheer dress like Bella Hadid did and style it under an oversized leather jacket or denim jacket. Or, wear it without anything on top and layer it over the matching lingerie set of your choice. At Marc Jacobs for Fall 2023, this looked like a sheer black catsuit under an oversized blazer with pointed-toe ballet flats. Versace instead opted for a sheer black turtleneck with a pair of black shors and strappy heeled sandals for their Fall 2023 show in Los Angeles. 

Turn Up The Volume

Playing with proportions is a great way to take your basic all-black outfit and give it a fashionable edge. Lori Harvey did this in a subtle way by pairing her nylon cargo pants with a fitted top, but designers at brands like Fear of God and Sacai took a more dramatic approach on the runways. The former did so by layering an oversized long coat over a slim-fitting pair of trousers and a blouse, while the latter opted for a high-low bubble skirt with a fitted long-sleeve tee. 

Hi, Shine

Even if you're not a magpie at heart, you can't deny the joy of wearing a little something sparkly from time to time. Wearing a monochromatic outfit is a great way to play with sparkle because it's surprisingly subtle. At Chanel, a tweed skirt and matching jacket elevated what would normally be an office-ready silhouette into something that's more nighttime-appropriate. At Max Mara, sparkly 3D flowers took a simple black shift dress into one that feels a little more playful. 

Double or Nothing

Leather pants and a leather jacket? Yes, please! I love this look for the fall and winter seasons. Leather isn't always a great idea in the summer, but you could always opt for a pair of leather shorts or a lighter-weight leather shirt in the meantime. Leather leggings are also a great idea if you wear a longer, tunic-style top! 

The archetype of a fashion girl varies, but you can typically break it down by geography. New York’s woman is forever on the go in head-to-toe black, while California’s operates at half the pace and lives in breezy boho style. And according to the summer 2023 trend report, there’s a new gal on the scene: Meet the Grecian girl, who has the appeal of Aphrodite and masters the draping trend with ease.

In the Pre-Fall 2023 collections, we saw liquid-like ruching from Bottega Veneta and swooping cowlnecks and capelets at Blumarine and Givenchy. Valentino even answered the question of what a modern working goddess would wear into the office: a collared shirtdress that flows into a wrapped waist—2023's corporate-approved take on the toga.

But summer’s draping trend is more than just an ephemeral fad. As designer Norma Kamali shares with Marie Claire, “draping is an art form in making clothing," similar to the majestic sculptures from the Hellenistic Period that depict goddesses in impossibly fluid gowns. Kamali’s iconic draped Diana dress—which debuted in the 1970s and has remained a cult classic since—is quintessential of her masterful work with the technique. "The Diana is as classic as the simplicity of the silhouettes of ancient Greece," she describes.

New York-based designer Marina Moscone adopts a similar sculptural approach when crafting her highly-lauded draped pieces, which include sarong-style dresses and multi-pleat trousers. “For me, draping explores the relationship between fabric and silhouette, married with the craftsmanship of a garment,” she describes. “I am very tactile from start to finish of every collection: I develop all my fabrics selectively in Italy, and from there, focus on the manipulation of these fabrics." Despite the laidback ease it connotes, draping is deliberate and intentional on the designer's part. But for you, dear reader, it can actually be that simple.

How Often to Clean Silver Jewelry

If you wondering on whether you need to bust out your jewelry box and go to town on all of your silver jewelry, think again. Take comfort in knowing that you really only need to clean your pieces as needed, a.k.a. when they are looking lackluster, dirty, or tarnished. However, Kyne recommends cleaning your jewelry in between wears or every three months if you prefer your pieces to look extra brilliant. With proper care and by following the tips outlined below, you can go much further in between cleans. All in all, how often you have to clean your silver jewelry depends on how you care for and store your pieces. 

Steps for Cleaning Silver Jewelry

If you have less than five minutes and some common household items, you’re ready to make your silver jewelry dazzle again. You’ll need a soft cloth, mild dish soap (such as Dawn), warm water, and an extra soft bristle toothbrush, says Kyne. And while this may seem obvious, you’ll also want to clean your jewelry in a large bowl, rather than over the sink to prevent any disastrous slip-ups. Below, Kyne has outlined easy-to-follow steps for cleaning your silver jewelry in minutes.  

1. Kyne recommends first using your soft bristle toothbrush to gently clean away any dust or debris that can collect along grooves and recessed areas. If your piece includes gemstones, make sure to take extra care while brushing and make sure to brush around the stone’s setting and backside as well. 
2. Add a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water. Stir around to create suds and gently place your jewelry pieces in the bowl. If your jewelry is extra grimy, allow your pieces to soak for a minute or two. Note: it’s best to leave out any pieces with precious gemstones from this step as water can loosen the stones, causing them to fall out. Instead, gently wipe the stone with a soft cloth. 
3. Using your toothbrush, gently scrub your pieces clean with the soapy water.  
4. Rinse your jewelry with water then dry with a soft cloth. And that’s it! Your silver jewelry should be shining just like new!  

How to Keep Silver Jewelry Clean

There are several ways to keep your jewelry clean and to prolong the longevity of your last cleaning.

• Take your jewelry off before getting wet: In general, it’s a great idea to take off your jewelry before getting in the shower, washing your hands, going for a swim, or sweating it up at the gym. Moisture on jewelry speeds up the oxidation process and therefore, tarnishing. 
• Store your jewelry properly: “Air exposure is what creates tarnish,” says Kyne. “Keeping your jewelry stored in a box or pouch will keep it looking shiny and new!” You get extra points if you keep your jewelry in an airtight container. 
• Apply moisturizer, perfume, and makeup before putting on your jewelry: Another general rule of thumb is to apply all of your moisturizers, perfumes, and makeup before putting on your jewelry pieces to keep them clean. These products can create a layer of grime on your pieces, while perfume may be too abrasive for your silver.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say your favorite fashion girls are experts at accessorizing. Maybe they know when their ‘fit needs that extra touch with a hair ribbon or their wrists are stacked with just the right amount of bracelets to look cool. I’m also willing to bet they know how to layer necklaces and make it look effortless. Well, if you’re anything like me and tend to throw on random necklaces and pray for the best, you know that expertly layering necklaces is anything but effortless. 

However, I’m happy to report that achieving that cool-girl look by layering your jewelry isn’t rocket science. But if you don’t believe me (I, too, needed some convincing), take it from Alison Bruhn, fashion stylist and co-founder of fashion media company, The Style That Binds Us. Since I’m a tad helpless when it comes to layering necklaces, I turned to Bruhn to help ease my woes, and that she did. Bruhn assures, “Layering isn’t a ‘science,’ rather it is a way to have fun and be creative.” 

Below, I’ve shared Bruhn’s expert tips and some of our favorite layering necklaces to help you on your own styling journey. From how to start your necklace set to mixing textures, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a layering pro in no time. 

How to Start Layering Necklaces

Before you start rummaging through your jewelry box for every necklace you own, you want to ensure you have one vital piece: a layering clasp. "The first thing I always suggest is to purchase a layering clasp," Bruhn says. A layering clasp, like the one below, works by connecting your necklaces together so they stay in place and untangled. They also make it incredibly easy to take off all of your necklaces at once.

 You're also going to want to start simple. The art of layering necklaces is all about stacking complementary pieces, but you don't want to go overboard. Bruhn recommends starting your necklace stack with three pieces. "More than 5 can easily become a tangled mess even if you’re using a layering clasp." 

Choose a Focal Point

For your necklace stack, you're going to want to choose a focal point, a.k.a. the star of the show, Bruhn says. "It’s especially nice if the pieces tell a story, with at least one necklace in the group having special meaning for you." So maybe it's your family heirloom passed on for generations, or maybe it's a long pendant you found at the thrift store. Whatever that special piece is to you, that's the piece you want to highlight in your layered look. Bruhn recommends choosing that piece first and then assembling your other layers around it. 

Mix Textures and Lengths

This is where all of the fun comes in. When you've got your layering clasp and focal piece in hand, now's the time to get layering. Rather than grab similar necklaces to your special piece, get creative with it! "You don’t want the grouping to look 'forced' or rigid," Bruhn advises. "Spice your pairings up by mixing chains, pendant necklaces, and colorful beads." Bruhn compares layering necklaces to creating a work of art—adding different textures and styles always adds more pizazz, she says. You may also want to consider adding a piece with gemstones such as a tennis necklace for a touch of glamour. 

Keep in Mind Your Face Shape

Another tip to keep in mind when building your layered look, Bruhn says, is to pay attention to your face shape, coloring, and neck length. "Silver or white gold near my skin can cast gray shadows up on my face, but gold gives me a glow because I have warm undertones in my skin," she says as an example. Meanwhile, Bruhn explains that chokers look best on those with longer necks since they create the illusion of a shorter neck. If your neck is shorter, however, you can still cheat the look of a choker style with a slightly longer necklace. Once you understand your coloring and shape, you can find the styles that best complement you. 

Pay Attention to Your Outfit

The top you choose to pair with your layered necklace look can make or break your outfit, so as a general rule of thumb, always try on the top you’re going to wear as you’re creating the necklace layers. Bruhn explains, "You don’t want part of the necklace to fall beneath the top you’ve chosen, or be too long so that it catches on a button, etc." 

As for what tops look best with a layered necklace moment, you've got plenty of options. "V-neck and scoopneck tops, strapless dresses, spaghetti straps, anything that gives room for multiple necklaces can work," Bruhn says. And if you want your layered necklaces to be the focal point of the look, Bruhn recommends staying away from dramatic prints and multicolored pieces of clothing that would compete with the jewelry grouping.

Relax and Experiment

All in all, the most important thing to consider when layering necklaces is to relax and experiment. Try on different combinations and even your whole jewelry collection until something resonates. "The point of layering necklaces is to create interesting unique looks, so relax and enjoy the process," Bruhn says. "Don’t let this be a stressor, there is no right or wrong combination."

Saturday, May 6 will see the event nine months in the making (or seven decades, in the case of the king himself): the coronation of King Charles. This is the United Kingdom's first coronation in 80 years—the last, of course, was the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, who went on to serve as monarch for 70 years. So, if you're interested in watching a piece of history but are based a long way from the U.K.—specifically, the U.S.—how can you watch the coronation without leaving your couch?

Good news: The event will be streamed, broadcast, and shown throughout the globe, meaning there are myriad ways to watch it, paid or otherwise. 

How to Stream the Coronation Online

• BBC.com. You can watch BBC's live telecast of the coronation via its website without needing a login, payment, or a subscription.
• Paramount+. You can stream CBS' live coverage of the coronation by signing up for Paramount+ from your smart TV, computer, or other device. It's a paid plan ($5/month), but you can get a seven-day free trial. (You can also get Peacock, which does the same for NBC, but that doesn't come with a free trial.)
• FuboTV. As with Paramount, you can sign up for a free seven-day trial of FuboTV. This is your best option if you want to compare and contrast coverage from different cable providers and pick your favorite (FuboTV has NBC, ABC, CBS, and more available). 
• Sling, YouTube TV, or Hulu with Live TV. If you wanted to subscribe to a paid cable package anyway, Sling, YouTube TV, DirecTV, or Hulu with Live TV are all great options. 
• BritBox. Again, there's no free trial, but if you're a fan of British television, you can sign up for BritBox, which has British content specifically. If you get a BritBox plan for the coronation, you'll be able to watch a live stream.

How to Watch the Coronation on TV

The coronation ceremony will formally begin at 11 a.m. BST (6 a.m. EST, 3 a.m. PST), but the procession to the coronation will start nearly an hour earlier, at 10.20 a.m. BST (5.20 a.m. EST, 2.20 a.m. PST), and guests will start arriving from 9.30 a.m. (4.30 a.m. EST, 1.30 a.m. PST).

I'm very excited about fashion this upcoming spring season. The chance to wear something other than the same three sweaters? Into it. The ability to wear a cute jacket that isn’t a puffer? Very down. But the one fashion opportunity that has me the most excited? The chance to add a metallic piece or two into my normal warmer-weather rotation. And I’m not alone. Designers like Brandon Maxwell, Gabriela Hearst, and Nensi Dojaka—to name a few!—all included metallic shades on their Spring/Summer 2023 runways. 

Call it the new wave of dopamine dressing or chalk it up to the influence of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, but metallics are "in" for this season. And while traditional gold and silver hues are popular, so too are options fashioned in shades of Barbiecore pink, vibrant blue, and green. While metallic, sparkly shades are commonly associated with the winter months and are generally more common on the Fall/Winter runways, stylist Lizzy Rosenberg thinks that their unexpected resurgence as a major trend for the Spring/Summer 2023 season has to do with the parallel popularity of early aughts-inspired fashion. 

One of her favorite designers to show pastel was the aforementioned Maxwell—who sent metallic maxi skirts and mini dresses in trending shades such as lavender and baby pink down the runway this spring. “It's really showing a fresh expression of the trend, while registering tribute to notes of ‘90s fashion and 2000s pop culture and style,” she says. 

Rosenberg also cited brands like Paco Rabanne as inspirations for the season ahead. The brand has gone viral for their Instagram-friendly range of chainmail skirts and dresses over the last few seasons. For Spring/Summer 2023, however, they channeled their metallic obsession into pairs of silver leather moto boots, fringed maxi skirts, and chrome-ified high-waisted trousers. Creative Director Julien Dossena’s “use of metallics, juxtaposed florals, leather harnesses, latex, combat boots, and babushka [head scarves], was an expression I have not seen done for some time,” she says. While spring florals might not be groundbreaking, styling them with chunky chainmail accessories certainly feels fresh.

I don't know about you, but I've been washing my hair using pretty much the same way for as long as I can remember. In fact, I barely put any thought into my process as I grab my favorite shampoo and conditioner and dive in. Every once in a while, I throw in a hair mask, deep conditioner, or scalp treatment, but the bare bones of my regimen remain basically the same. So when I learned that some of the fellow hair aficionados in my social circle started reverse washing their hair, I immediately became intrigued and had to learn more. 

"Reverse washing means to reverse the steps in which you wash your hair," explains celebrity hairstylist Glenn Ellis. "So, traditionally you go in and shampoo first and then condition. With reverse washing, you’ll do conditioner first, then shampoo."

This sounds easy enough, but if there's anything I learned from our expert-driven guides on how to wash, how often to wash, and how to co-wash hair, it's that there's no one-size-fits-all routine. Washing your hair, like applying skincare, depends on your personal needs, lifestyle, and hair type. So I asked Ellis to unpack all things reverse washing, from how to do it to who should engage. 

How To Reverse Wash Your Hair

If you're perturbed by the prospect of switching up your tried-and-true hair wash schedule, don't be! Making the switch to reverse washing is far easier than you think.

"Start by applying conditioner to your hair. I always recommend mids to ends, avoiding the roots," Ellis advises. "I also always tell my clients to let it sit for a few minutes so the hair can soak it up. Then, go in with your shampoo, and shampoo your hair. Make sure to really get it lathered, and rinse it out fully."

Et voilà! That's all there is to it. 

Why Reverse Wash?

And why should you consider reverse washing? As with all matters haircare, consider your strands' current state and needs. In particular, check if your hair is feeling lank, oily, or dirty.

"Sometimes conditioners can leave the hair feeling weighed down," says Ellis. "With reverse washing, you ensure that it is fully out of the hair."

He adds that reverse washing also ensures that you're completely cleansing those thick conditioners from your scalp and hair.

"Oftentimes, clients don’t rinse the conditioner out all the way, and it really weighs the hair down and can make it look dirty on thinner hair," he warns. "I recommend clients with super fine hair to reverse wash to make sure that their hair is getting the moisture from the conditioner without running the risk of it being weighed down from an improper rinse."

In short, if you've found yourself leaving the shower with your mane feeling dirty, oily, or improperly cleansed, consider switching to reverse washing as a way of guaranteeing a full, clarifying wash. 

Who Should—And Shouldn't—Reverse Wash

While reverse washing can result in fantastic benefits, keep in mind that it's not suitable for all hair types. Specifically, Ellis recommends reverse washing "for clients with thinner and finer hair" because this particular texture is most prone to being weighed down by heavy conditioners and oils. 

He also notes that while people of all hair densities can choose to reverse wash, he would discourage those with curly or natural hair from doing so. Those hair types, he says, "need moisture, and I often recommend leaving a little conditioner in their hair when rinsing."

So if your hair falls on the textured side, try a shampoo made for curly hair or natural hair, and consider tacking a leave-in conditioner onto your routine, too.

As we speak, I'm looking out of my window at a dreary winter scene: snow is steadily falling and bundled-up New Yorkers are rushing indoors to get away from the frigid cold. With this likely to be my reality for the next several weeks, my mind can't help but wander to previous days spent out west filled with sunshine and sand. It's days like these when I'm mentally planning my next trip to Los Angeles. 

A fun fact about me: I was born in Long Beach, California, which is about 25 miles south of L.A., and I had plenty of family in the area. So every summer until I was about 16, we would spend a week taking in the sights, strolling the boardwalks, and eating amazing food; it was the trip I most looked forward to every year. Now that I'm an adult with access to my own adult money and with the freedom to choose my own agenda, I think I'm well overdue for a trip back to the City of Angels.

Of course with L.A. being so huge—there are over 200 neighborhoods, after all—there are literally thousands of options on where to stay, eat, and see. However, there are certain non-negotiables for any trip to the city. Ahead, these are my three top picks on what to do in L.A., plus what to wear during each activity. 

Relax at The Peninsula Beverly Hills

If you're anything like me on vacation, you need at least one full day dedicated to rest and relaxation, and the Peninsula Beverly Hills was practically built for just that. Think of the resort-like hotel as your tropical oasis in the heart of Beverly Hills. Spend your morning at the hotel's luxury spa where you can treat yourself to a facial, massage, body wrap, or all of the above with a spa package. You'll be zenned out in no time thanks to the spa's state-of-the-art treatments and calming atmosphere. 

Once you're floating on cloud nine, head to the rooftop pool to bask in the sun for the rest of the day. What to Pack for Relaxing at The Peninsula Beverly Hills

Stroll the Venice Beach Boardwalk 

If you want to experience the epitome of California-cool vibes, head to the Venice Beach boardwalk. Along this roughly one-mile stretch along the beach, you'll find about a million and one things to do, but it's the ultimate space for people-watching. Here, you'll find skateboarders and roller skaters attempting to out-trick one another near the skate park and bodybuilders casually lifting ginormous weights on the beach. You'll also find a ton of street performers doing their thing and vendors selling crafts, jewelry, and art. As you head up and down the boardwalk, stop by the boutique shops for cheap souvenirs, take pictures with the massive art murals, and grab a bite to eat at one of the many snack bars. 

If you're looking for a little more action, Venice Beach has something for you, too. Rent a surfboard and try to catch a wave or opt for a Segway or bike. While the actual Venice Beach boardwalk prohibits biking, there's the Venice Beach Bike Path, a.k.a. the Strand, that runs alongside it, plus the surrounding neighborhood is incredibly bike-friendly. A bike also makes it easy to make the three-mile trip to the Santa Monica Pier where you'll find a ton of amusement rides. 

With a day of exploring under the hot California sun, we recommend something cool and airy. You'll fit right in with the eccentric crowd of Venice with crochet pants, a bikini top, and fun sunglasses. Comfy sandals are a must, too.

If you're a rom-com fan, you'll recognize this area as the shopping center where Vivianne completely disses a sales associate in Pretty Woman, and I hope we can all have a moment as iconic as that while shopping. Plus, if you stay at the Peninsula Hotel, you're already within walking distance of the strip. Along this roughly two-and-a-half block stretch you'll find storefronts from some of the biggest names in fashion including Gucci, Fendi, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Tiffany and Co., and more, so make sure your credit cards are at the ready. 

After you've shopped to your heart's content, we're going to take a wild guess and say you've built up an appetite. Thankfully for you, there's a wide array of eateries nearby. Enjoy just about any seafood you can imagine at Avra Beverly Hills, dine on family-style Chinese dishes at Mr. Chow, or opt for authentic Mexican at Cantina Frida, just to name a few. 

Because you're going to want to spend all of your energy focused on finding your next it-item, you'll want to make sure you're in something comfy, yet still fits the high-scale vibe of the area. But if you've grown fatigued by the flirty, thigh-grazing silhouette and all the discourse it's inspired (is Miu Miu's mini actually wearable?), turn your attention instead to the more mature sister of the skirt family: the maxi. And as Stitch Fix expert stylist Gillian McHattie explains, it comes down to which option you choose, of course, but also how you style a maxi skirt.

"There are endless patterns, silhouettes, and styles to choose from," she says of the maxi skirt gamut. It can be your new workwear staple: "For clients looking for an effortless and chic work outfit, a maxi skirt is top of my list because the length is appropriate for the office." But the floor-sweeping number also works as a casual piece to wear on the weekends, says McHattie. "I'm loving the resurgence of laidback, 70s-inspired maxi skirts, especially with the new release of the Daisy Jones & The Six series," the stylist offers, shouting out vintage-feeling "crocheted or embroidered patterns, flowy florals, faux fur, and brown leather" for spring 2023.

How to Style Maxi Skirts

Denim Maxi Skirt

"Denim maxi skirts are one of my favorite looks this season," McHattie shares. "For more adventurous clients, I recommend going all out and opting for a denim-on-denim look by styling a long jean skirt with a denim top and adding a pop of color with a suede bootie to really emphasize the maximalist western look."

Long Slip Skirt

"Right now, I’m loving a maxi slip skirt look paired with tall boots (like these from Dolce Vita) and an oversized sweater," shares McHattie. "This look is a perfect example of the Stich Fix-forecasted trend Proportion Play. What I love most about this look is that it’s extremely versatile because it incorporates staple closet pieces."

Floral Maxi Skirt

"With spring just around the corner, I recommend trying out the garden state trend," says McHattie, inviting you to lean into spring 2023's inspired and fresh-feeling take on florals. "Opt for a subtle flower-patterned maxi skirt to pair with a simple white top and your best ballet flats," offers the stylist.

Long Leather Skirt

Unsurprisingly, leather will be a prevalent textile this spring, as the material is timeless and always manages to insert itself into the trend cycle no matter the season. However, the Stitch Fix stylist observes that she's "seeing a lot of warm neutrals such as browns and beiges" as opposed to the ever-standard black. "This brown leather maxi skirt from A.L.C is one of my favorite items at the moment because it's so chic and pairs well with both boots or flats," McHattie offers.

Pleated Maxi Skirt

Given that preppy style is experiencing a rebrand in 2023 (evolving from stuffy and conservative to more playful and subversive), the pleated skirt is in the middle of a fashion moment. Cash in on the momentum by opting for a long skirt done in pressed creases, like Manning Cartell's voluminous option. Then, team it with a simple and understated white tank top and an effortless pair of slip-on shoes. "For complimenting a longer hemline look, 91 percent of our stylists predict that low heels will dominate women’s shoes in 2023," McHattie shares, dubbing a maxi skirt paired with kitten heels a trending combination. 

Black Maxi Skirt

"Stitch Fix predicted this year shoppers would focus on creating an Intentional Wardrobe, a personalized capsule closet with investment pieces that lend themselves to 24/7 dressing (i.e., the ability to wear a staple item for a variety of occasions and seasons)," describes McHattie. And a key item she sees shoppers gravitating toward is a neutral black maxi skirt. "I love a simple wrap skirt, such as this timeless black piece from B.Freedom, which can be seamlessly styled for the office or a weekend night out."

Crochet Maxi Skirt

McHattie encourages you to lean into a retro feel with your long skirt outfit, starting with a floor-sweeping option made of crochet. "For clients that want to take the '70s look a step further, try emulating the rock n’ roll vibe with a crocheted maxi skirt—like the below one from Theory—and pair it with distressed cowboy boots and a shimmery shacket."

From midi to maxi to micro, teeny-tiny, "that's more of a belt than a garment," let's talk skirts. While certain silhouettes result from viral fashion phenomena (looking at you, the Miu Miu mini), the garment itself is immune to the comings and goings of the trend cycle. It's perennial; like a good pair of jeans or a well-loved tee, the skirt is a forever favorite for all wardrobes. Ahead, two fashion stylists, Heather Newberger and Mickey Freeman, elaborate on why the item will always be pertinent and offer insight on how to style skirts of all lengths and materials—including, yes, the oft-debated mini skirt. What to Keep in Mind

• Pay Attention to Proportions

"When styling skirts, always remember to opt for one that accentuates your unique silhouette," Freeman, a celebrity stylist who works with the likes of Keke Palmer and Sierra Capri, shares with Marie Claire over email. "It is, in most cases, a good idea to choose the garment that elongates, but you also want to consider that the overall look is relatively proportionate."

• Consider Your Footwear

"More so than pants, I think skirts are a place where footwear can shine," Newberger expresses. "It’s super easy to dress up or down any skirt with the perfect shoe; Pairing a skirt that may feel too elevated can easily become cheeky with the right sneakers or chic with a pair of cream ankle boots that have a pointed toe," the stylists illustrates.

• Break the Rules

Newberger urges you to, yes, consider a few styling guidelines but also that you throw the rulebook out the window on occasion. Experiment with a few skirt outfits featuring "two items you think would never go together [because they] might just go together—especially if one is a skirt," the stylist says. Her go-to unconventional combos are those that "become exaggerated versions of themselves: Pairing an oversized sweater with a micro mini; Finding a top that shows off your underboob and wearing it with a flowing maxi; Dressing down your midi with a pair of combat boots."

How to Style Maxi Skirts

"I feel like I’m always pushing a front tuck, but, for me, it’s the chicest way to style a maxi," Newberger expresses. "Whether it’s an oversized sweater, blouse, or tee, tucking the front into your maxi will highlight your curves and make sure you still read as sexy or adventurous, even if there isn’t a lot of skin showing." 

Freeman offers another approach to styling a long skirt: "An interesting way to style a maxi skirt is to go with a tastefully split one. The split will allow you to bring attention to a pair of intricately strapped sandals with a peek-a-boo effect, finished off with a top close to the body."

How to Style Midi Skirts

"Midi skirts can be difficult to style," admits Newberger. "They don’t always end at the most flattering place and, if styled incorrectly, can quickly make you look much shorter and/or stouter than desired. Making the right choice in footwear can become extremely crucial at this juncture, and I urge anyone styling a midi not to wear shoes that feature ankle straps. Why? By creating a line of demarcation, they steal inches from your legs regardless of height," she explains.

Freeman, though, does have a fool-proof midi skirt outfit for you to try: "Wearing a cropped jacket, a softly tucked t-shirt, and a pair of statement trainers is a method that is easy to achieve while simultaneously playing up the skirt itself."

How to Style Mini Skirts

"When it comes to styling a mini skirt, you want to take into account how much of your body you're comfortable sharing," Newberger advises. "Mini is in the title—and, to me, many of the outfits that look best with one are often of the same variety. Crop tops and form-fitting shirts you can tuck into your skirt feel pervasive. However, I'm more inclined to suggest an oversized sweater as it's visually more interesting to pair pieces that work in opposition to one another," she admits. 

"I also love to style a mini with an oversized blazer that brushes right at the bottom," Newberger adds. "The intentionality of the oversized blazer both elevates and desexualizes the mini with ease." Freeman echoes her, saying that "mini skirts tend to have a youthful vibe that, when juxtaposed with a finely tailored blazer, results in a sophisticated yet hip look."

How to Style a Denim Skirt

"When working with denim skirts, styling them with a delicate lace or silk top always creates the desired effect for me," Freeman says, adding that he enjoys the "rustic feel of denim seamlessly balanced out by the elegance and femininity of silks and/or lace." 

As for Newberger, she recommends test-driving a denim maxi skirt this spring. "There are so many great versions of this skirt hitting stores that play with texture and tone by using different types of washes and distressing." As for styling a long jean number, she advises choosing "a top that’s either oversized or cropped," as she's partial to "pieces that come prepared with their own points of view."
