How Can I Stimulate Hair Growth?

The best hair growth shampoos may speed up your lengthening process, but they have their limitations and, like everything, take time to see true results.

That said, there are other practices you should consider adopting to stimulate hair growth for longer, healthier hair. Dr. Francis says that supplementing a hair growth shampoo with a diet rich in omega-3s, fiber, sulfur ("our hair has a lot of sulfur in its internal structure"), and protein will really speed up the process. Foods like lean meats, leafy greens, nuts, beans, and fish fit the bill. And most importantly, when it comes to diet, make sure you drink a lot of water. Francis recommends two liters a day if you want to see results.

Now, if you really want to see growth, incorporate other types of haircare formulas that contain ingredients like finasteride or minoxidil—the active ingredient in Rogaine—that are clinically proven to speed up hair growth. And as always, a board-certified dermatologist or trichologist can work with you to create a regimen for your specific hair loss issues, and potentially recommend in-office treatments like corticosteroid injections, laser treatments, or PRP therapy.

Why Isn't My Hair Growing Quickly?

Many factors can contribute to hair not growing as quickly as you'd hope. Most roads lead back to your overall health and habits. Dr. Tosti points out that androgenetic alopecia—the most common cause of hair thinning in young women—"is often precipitated or aggravated by environmental factors that cause increased hair shedding." Those can include everything from systemic disorders to medications and crash diets.

Dr. Shapiro adds that "stress is one of the main causes in young adults, and causes telogen effluvium (large number of follicles in resting phase)." “For the love of all things holy, quit using so much concealer under your eyes,” warns Mellinger. “I prefer to put a bit of concealer on the back of my hand and use a brush to apply it. What should be a simple question is actually fairly complicated. The reality is, “Rosacea is not fully understood,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi says. The chronic skin condition comes with many visible symptoms, including redness, broken capillaries, flushing, blushing, and red bumps across the nose and cheeks. However, the underlying causes are not yet definitively known.

Rosacea is most common in women with fair skin between the ages of 30 and 50, but that’s not to say that men, younger individuals, or those with more melanin rich skin are exempt from the condition. “Rosacea is also seen in those with sensitive or reactive skin, with patients complaining that most products they use cause stinging, burning or irritation,” adds Dr. Shirazi.

What Causes Rosacea?

While the causes rosacea aren't crystal-clear, scientists have determined a few factors that contribute to its onset. “Genetics plays a major role,” notes Dr. Shirazi. If anyone in your family has rosacea, you have a greater chance of developing the skin condition as well.

Studies have also found that patients with rosacea have an overgrowth of demodex mites living on their skin. Everyone has little mites living in their pores and on their lashes (so cute, right?), but those with rosacea have more than the average person. This can have a positive impact on the cardiovascular system, boosting heart health, and circulation,” explains Dr. Jonathan Leary, a concierge wellness doctor and the CEO and founder of Remedy Place. “Cold plunges have also shown to stimulate the release of endorphins and dopamine, which are natural mood enhancers that contribute to a sense of well-being and reduced stress.”

Kylie Jenner has officially joined her older sister Kim Kardashian in the fragrance space, announcing her debut solo perfume, “COSMIC,” which is described as an “elevated scent that is perfect for day and night.”

“COSMIC”—which is available to purchase beginning this upcoming Thursday, March 7, via her company’s website, Jenner announced on Instagram—“is a sweet, warm floral,” she captioned a post revealing the fragrance. COSMIC opens with “star jasmine (floral, sweet) + blood orange (bright, citrusy),” has a heart of “golden amber accord (rich) + red peony accord (soft, sweet floral),” and a base of “vanilla musk accord (creamy, addictive) + cedarwood (woody, warm),” she elaborated. 

Naturally, Jenner’s mother, momager Kris Jenner, commented on one of her youngest daughter’s posts with emojis of hands clapping (as one does when they receive 10 percent of the profit). Though her mom is one of Jenner’s biggest supporters when it comes to her business ventures (and otherwise), Jenner once told Jennifer Lawrence that Kris had her doubts about her first product, the Kylie Lip Kit, which launched in 2015.

“Proving people wrong was a challenge, but so was building it from the ground up,” Jenner told Lawrence in an interview last year with Interview Magazine. “It was me and my mom, and we never made a makeup line. We didn’t know where to start. We didn’t have anyone helping us. And my mom thought I was going to be stuck with lip kits in my garage for the rest of my life.”

"The hair is on the scalp for a long time. Years, in most cases. It's hard for the hydration from the scalp to reach those long ends and leave-in conditioner can do just that," she tells Marie Claire.

Still, different hair types need to go about their conditioning process differently. The best way to do this? Finding the right amount of product! If a leave-in conditioner "made for all hair types" sounds too good to be true, I understand. But good ingredients are good ingredients! Sometimes, it just depends on how you utilize them.

"For [Odele's] Leave-in Conditioner, it comes down to the amount you use.  Use less if your hair is fine to medium and focus on the mids to ends. Use lots more if your hair is curly to coarse," shares Holden. "Our Leave-in Conditioner also has a balanced formulation—a.k.a. depending on your hair type, the amount used can work magic for every end of the spectrum of hair shape, thickness, and dryness levels. Rinse-out conditioners are designed to immediately restore any moisture lost from shampooing, so they’re typically made with heavier ingredients, like thick oils and creams. Left on long-term, these ingredients would weigh down the hair, which is why you rinse them out after a few minutes," shares Holden. "Leave-in conditioners, on the other hand, are formulated with lighter ingredients that coat strands without weighing them down or leaving heavy residue. That way, it can be left on your hair—and continue to nourish and protect it—until you’re ready to wash it out."

How to Apply Leave-In Conditioner

Taylor says you should apply your favorite leave-in conditioner to damp, towel-dried hair.

"When using a leave-in spray, aim for the mid to ends of the hair," she notes. "Alternatively, squeeze a dime-sized amount into your palm and rake through the mid to ends of the hair. If you have thicker or longer hair, feel free to adjust the amount! Once you have applied the product, use a wide tooth comb to disperse the product throughout your hair."

If you have a thicker or curlier texture, you can add more product to tame frizz and flyaways once your hair is dry and styled.

And if your hair is fine or oily?

"The best part about a good leave-in conditioner is it adds moisture to your hair without feeling heavy or greasy. If you have fine or oily hair and are nervous to use any products in your hair after showering, consider starting with a leave-in conditioner," adds Hayes. "Always focus the product on the mids to ends of your hair—never spray it directly on the roots."

Lucky for hair treatment devotees, we live in a world absolutely flush with slicked-back hairstyles. Even luckier? While the look is great with a leave-in conditioner, it's not your only styling option. In fact, using a leave-in is the perfect prep step for any hairstyle.

"Leave-in conditioners truly have so many applications! They are used often in editorial and celebrity hairstyling to create sleek styles, avant-garde shapes, wet-hair looks, and more!" shares Hayes. "For day-to-day, one of my favorite looks to create with it is a slicked-back bun. Spray your leave-in conditioner around your hairline and part line, then add a smoothing cream. Use an edge brush to pull the hair back tight and smooth, then tie your bun. I find this works best on hair that hasn’t been washed in a few days."

Leave-ins also offer a great refreshment for curly girls' natural texture.

"You could also use Leave-in Conditioner between washes, to rehydrate and extend your style," adds Holden. "Simply slick a few pumps through your [dry] strands to smooth down frizz and flyaways, or scrunch it into your curls for a little extra bounce and definition."

Welcome to What I Learned, Maire Claire’s monthly report on the most transformative treatments, devices, and innovations in aesthetics. Here, our editors candidly share their biggest takeaways post-procedure. 

I’m one of the 14 million lucky individuals to have rosacea. For the uninitiated, rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness, and, occasionally, acne-looking bumps across the cheeks, nose, and forehead. There’s no cure or explanation for why flares happen (love that, really) and the rough texture ebbs and flows. I’ve tried my best to avoid my triggers: direct sunlight, spicy foods, and my personal favorite, heat. I’ve gradually learned how to placate my often angry skin with an assortment of ice rollers, prescription creams, and even the occasional antibiotic. 

Still, as a beauty editor, I will volunteer as tribute for just about any treatment that claims to be a fix—even when it sounds a little hokey. Cut to: Facialist Madalaina Conti telling me that she has gold beads from Australia that will re-magnetize my skin’s energy field and reduce my redness. Like I said: I’ll try anything. 

Called Qi, the professional treatment, which combines acupuncture philosophy and the study of the skin’s static magnetic fields (more on that, below), is thought to serve as a big reset button for your skin. It’s entirely low risk, so despite my skepticism, I powered through two treatments and a few at-home touch-ups. The results were shocking. So much so, that I can’t stop staring at my before-and-after photos. Everything I learned from the treatment—including why it gave me the best sleep of my life—ahead. 

The Treatment, Explained

Understanding how Qi works requires an understanding of both static magnetic fields and acupuncture. 

At baseline: A static magnetic field is created when a group of magnets or charges attract a certain force. When you place a static magnetic field onto live tissue (in this case, human skin), it’s clinically proven to speed up wound healing, increase cell communication, and help repair and reset damaged skin (Just look at this 2012 clinical trial for proof).

Acupuncture on the other hand utilizes pressure points to trigger certain parasympathetic reactions. “There are three acupuncture points, the yintang, which is between the brow, conception vessel 24, which is above the lip, and governing vessel 26, which is below the lip,” explains Conti. “When you’re stimulating these three points, you’re putting the body back into the parasympathetic rest and repair mode. There are bladder points between the eyes, which can flush inflammation, there’s the stomach eight point by the hairline, which is good for lifting, or spots in front of the ears that can help with drainage.” 

The so-called magic of Qi happens when the founding properties of static magnetic fields and acupuncture meet. The gold beads that make up the magnetic field are strategically placed on acupressure points to help an individual reach their skin goals. 

The Benefits

When the magnets have stimulated both the targeted acupressure points and created a magnetic field, the benefits of the treatment begin. “This is giving your skin a hard reset and putting it back into balance so you're actually able to repair the skin. It’s able to non-invasively perk up your cellular communication and have those cells function better,” explains Conti. “It evens out your oil secretions and water production, it builds volume, it smooths texture, and releases inflammation, which is the biggest benefit.”

The Cost

Qi isn’t necessarily a widely offered treatment—you’ll have to do some serious research to find a provider in your state. Prices will naturally vary depending on location and other modalities used during your facial, however you’re typically looking at a couple of hundred dollars. If you want a more toned down version of Qi, you can purchase an at-home kit for $160. 

The Aftercare

“There's really no downtime with this,” says Conti. “The only thing I would say to avoid is a heavy duty workout where circulation will be moving through your whole body.” She also recommends sticking to simple, hydrating skincare and skipping any exfoliants for at least a few days post-treatment as the skin is extra absorbent during this time. 

What I Learned

Ahead of my appointment, I did a pretty decent amount of research into acupuncture’s ability to increase skin health and static magnetic field’s connection to cell communication. The studies are there, so I genuinely wasn’t super skeptical about Qi’s efficacy. I'm a big believer in science. That being said, I know first hand how finicky rosacea can be, so despite my deep dive into medical journals galore, I remained in the believe-it-when-I-see-it camp.

That said, I’ll cut to the chase: I believe it. My biggest takeaways from the treatment, ahead.  

The Treatment Itself Is an Odd Sensation

I’ve had my fair share of facials—it’s a very welcome occupational hazard. My face has been slapped, my skin has been nearly burned off, and every machine in existence has made my muscles twitch. Still, nothing is comparable to Qi. It’s entirely painless, which is a huge positive, but the pressure certainly creates a weird sensation.

It starts out pretty standard: Makeup gets removed, and then a little gentle exfoliation and facial massage comes into play. Then it's time for the Qi application. Conti first applies the Qi Beauty Intense Oil, which is soothing in its own right, to act as an adhesive for the magnets. It gets swiped on with a fan brush and then the 24-carat gold magnets are strategically placed on the skin. 

I was able to feel the magnetic force forming and was acutely aware when a pressure point was activated. I’d liken the experience to that of a weighted blanket—but on your face. It takes around 15 minutes from start to finish to apply the beads, at which point they sit for roughly another 20 minutes on the skin. I wouldn’t say that I necessarily felt anything—except relaxed. 

It’s Amazing for Rosacea

Qi is a generally agreeable, non-invasive facial that’s well suited for everyone, particularly those who struggle with rosacea (that would be me) and acne. I arrived at Conti’s with a pretty active flare and noticed a decrease in the redness on my cheeks directly after the treatment. 

“The number one thing this is going to do is flush inflammation. If you’re struggling with redness or have an overactivity of circulation or heat in the face, it will balance it out,” says Conti. That said, the full extent of the redness reducing results will not take effect until day two or three. By then, my skin looked as even-toned and non-irritated as I can remember—and it stayed that calm for a solid month. It didn’t feel as sensitive to products or reactive to the weather. I genuinely can’t recall a time when a product or even a prescription cream had such a profound effect on my skin’s chronically red state. “It's getting your skin to be more regulated and balanced so that it has more immunity to defend and heal itself,” adds Conti. 

The Beads Are Gold for a Reason

I’ll be honest: At first I thought the beads were painted 24K gold purely for aesthetic reasons. It turns out, there's a purely scientific explanation. “Gold has a very high antioxidant property,” explains Conti. “So when you're placing the beads on the skin, that gold alchemy is getting transferred to the skin.” It’s that transfer that actually changes the beads from gold to copper throughout the course of the treatment. 

Pro tip: Don’t throw the beads away after your treatment. Clean them, grind them up, and put them in the soil of any plants you keep at home. The nutrient-dense composition will encourage your plants to grow. “My plants grow like crazy and nothing goes to waste,” notes Conti. 

It Put Me Right to Sleep

When I initially entered Conti’s studio, she informed me that I might get a little sleepy from the treatment. I didn’t think anything of it. I can power through two Benadryls need be, so a little facial wasn’t going to put me to sleep. Cut to: I was falling asleep at my desk and had the best, 12-hour night sleep. My first session, I attributed the drowsiness to a coincidence, but when exhaustion hit me like clockwork following my second treatment, I realized Conti’s word of caution was entirely legitimate. 

The reason being: The yintag acupuncture point, which is targeted with gold beads positioned between the eyebrows, is famed for inducing deep relaxation, meditation, and yes, sleep.

What to Look For in a Korean Sunscreen

• SPF Level

Korea has its own standards for sun protection—and they're a bit more in-depth than the United States's basic pass/fail broad spectrum test.

“There are four grades in the PA system: PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++,” Alicia Yoon, founder of Peach & Lily, previously told Marie Claire. “Each plus sign covers a rand of the PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) test. The highest number of the +’s offers the most UVA protection. So while you’re shopping, look out for sunscreen bottles with as many plus signs as possible.”

SPF levels can seem confusing. Is higher really better? By how much? Which SPF level is best for the face?

"I tell my patients to go for at least SPF 30," Dr. Lamm says. "Yes, higher SPF does offer more protection, but the increase is incremental and smaller. So, for example, SPF 30 offers 97 percent blockage of UVB rays, SPF 50 blocks 98 percent, and then SPF 100 blocks 99 percent. So a majority of us physicians say at least SPF 30, because the difference after that is not as big."

She notes, however, that if you are particularly sensitive to the sun (whether because of medication, diseases like lupus, very fair skin, or a history of skin cancer), or if you know that you'll be out in the sun all day when the rays are especially harsh, you should err on the higher side when it comes to SPF levels.

• Broad-Spectrum Coverage

Dr. Lamm says that no matter the formulation, your sunscreen should always be broad spectrum, which means that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. While UVB protection is measured by SPF (which stands for Sun Protection Factor), UVA protection is quantified in a sunscreen's PA rating—a detail more often included in Korean options than in Western ones. While UVB rays cause sunburn most often, UVA rays penetrate skin more deeply and play a greater role in wrinkle formation.

"If you use any Korean sunscreens you'll actually also see a PA rating, and means it offers UVA protection as well," says Dr. Lamm. "They don't really do any PA ratings in America. I always say I like PA with four pluses (PA++++)."

• Formulation

Once you've ensured that your sunscreen is SPF 30 or higher and that it has a high PA rating, you only need to worry about the finish of the formula. Dr. Lamm explains that someone with oily skin might want a Korean sunscreen with a matte finish, while those with oily skin might prefer a thicker, more hydrating formula.

"If you have sensitive skin, oftentimes we will recommend mineral sunscreens over chemical ones," she adds. "And if you want other skincare benefits, you can look for products that have antioxidants and other ingredients that make the sunscreen work even better." Someone looking for brightening options may prefer a Vitamin C-infused formula, for instance, while someone looking to refine the appearance of pores may opt for a niacinamide-infused sunscreen.

• Cost

"In Korea, skincare doesn't have to break your bank," says Dr. Lamm. "Sometimes, the price of what you're starting to see on the Western side is just ridiculous, but these sunscreens are often 15 or 20 dollars, and they work great."

Scores of K-Beauty fans swear by their Korean sunscreens, but for the uninitiated, the difference between these options and their Western counterparts is rather opaque. Sunscreen is sunscreen...right? As it turns out, wrong.

"The number one difference between Korean sunscreens and other ones would be their cosmetic elegance," says Dr. Lamm. "They're lightweight, absorb quickly, and there's really minimal to no white cast." (Unless the Korean sunscreen says tonal, which can look a little grayish, but they do that on purpose.) "They're truly suitable for everyday use and go under makeup beautifully."

The expert adds that Korean sunscreens come in a wide variety of textures, so there are plenty of options for all skin types—dry, oily, combination, and sensitive alike. "In Korea you'll find gels, lotions, creams, essences, and even sunwater," the skincare expert explains, "You can choose what feels the most comfortable on your skin."

Finally, she applauds the "innovative ingredients" used in Korean sunscreens, which support long-term skin health in addition to providing a high degree of protection against sun damage. Centella asiatica, niacinamide, ginseng extract, and antioxidants are all great examples.

Korean Sunscreens vs. Western Sunscreens

"Unlike sunscreens found in the west, Korean sunscreens are often equipped with new innovative filters allowing for more specific pigmentation protection (graded as PA+++) while also being lightweight and hydrating," explains Dr. Lee. "The elegance of these products minimize the chance of a white cast or heavy feel when one is wearing sunscreen. The skin is often left appearing dewy and glowing."

How to Apply Korean Sunscreen

Amount

When you apply sunscreen, you should always ensure that you have enough to fully cover your face and neck. Dr. Lamm recommends a "two finger length amount," which amounts to a drop about the size of a nickel.

Reapplication

Reapplication is key to all-day sun protection, particularly if you're sweating or swimming. (Yes, even if your formula of choice is waterproof.)

Regular reapplication is unrealistic if you're wearing sunscreen under a layer of makeup. The good news? "I tell my patients not to worry too much," Dr. Lamm says, "because primary application in the morning is still the most important. If you can only apply sunscreen once, the most important time to do so is in the morning, before you leave the house."

This applies even if you're only stepping outside for a quick errand, if you're taking a drive, or if you're sitting by a window.

"Sun damage and photo-aging is cumulative," she warns, "so those short car rides or short walks without any sun protection are one day going to show up on your skin cumulatively. Every time I get in the car and drive, I put on sunscreen, and if I have any amount of makeup on and don't want to ruin that, I may use a sun stick, a sun powder, or a sun cushion, which doesn't give as much coverage as two finger lengths of a cream, but it's something."

I'm a morning person. I normally wake up at around seven or eight and, while I do have an alarm, it's not hard to wake me up. I honestly wake up maybe five to 10 minutes before my alarm even goes off. It’s funny because whenever I travel my road managers are always confused about how I’m so awake.

Morning Maintenance

I like to keep my beauty routine in the morning very simple—especially when I'm in the Philippines because the weather is very humid there. I wash my face, probably put some sunblock on, and that's it. I like any sunblock that comes in stick form because I hate getting the product on my hand—it feels like such a waste to me. On days where I know I'll be meeting with a lot of people, I'll do a little bit more. But generally I like to keep it simple, especially when I'm not working because I like to let my face rest. 

Power Start

I used to be a breakfast person, but over the past few months I've been trying to fix my eating habits. I started intermittent fasting, so I’ve kind of taken breakfast out of the equation. I normally eat my first meal at 12 and that meal is usually a breakfast meal. I love avocado toast. I love oatmeal. I love breakfast food.

Signature Makeup Look

I love just a clean, minimal makeup look. I'm not very talented when it comes to doing my own makeup, but I love a cat eye and I love blush. I love adding blush onto my nose and to my chin. I just kind of go crazy with it. The Patrick Ta one is my favorite.

Fitness Fix

One thing I've been really conscious about over the past year is making sure I get my 10,000 steps a day. I thought it was normal for us to hit at least 10,000 a day, but you have to put in the effort to hit that number. I try to go on a walk in the morning with my dog. That's our kind of bonding moment. I usually hit the treadmill for 30 minutes for a little fast-paced cardio. Then I try to go to the gym at least twice a week. I love lifting weights—it just makes me feel so strong.

Self Care Ritual

I wear heels when I'm at work, so my legs are always killing me. Immediately when I get home I go and lay down. I bought these patches from Japan—I don't even know what you call them—but they're supposed to help soothe your legs. They heat up when you stick them on. I do that and then I raise my legs up against a wall and just sit there for 30 minutes. I get my daily dose of TikTok when I do that, too.

Signature Scent

I have three scents that I rotate depending on my mood for the day. There's this one brand from Korea called Tambourines, and my favorite scent of theirs is called Camo; it’s more of an earthy, musky scent. But my signature scent that I've been wearing for years now would probably be Chanel Chance. I’ve also added Tom Ford Blanc into my collection.

Hair Help

I'm very particular about my hair. I have very thin, fragile hair, so I try not to put too much heat on my hair. Even with my hairstylists, I always instruct them to put a heat protectant on and not over-dry my hair. Personally, I like to shampoo and conditioner every day because I get oily pretty quickly. I put in a Kerastase hair serum and then a hair cream once my hair is dry. I never brush my hair when it’s wet either—it just dries.

Cheap-But-Chic

I'm always looking for lip balms. I probably have a million lip balms because I'm always putting them in bags, switching bags, and then forgetting that I left my lip balm in a different bag. My lips are always chapped, so I love Aquaphor.

I would say Audrey Hepburn is a classic beauty. I feel like she had a very simple beauty routine as well. She was such a lovely person based on all the interviews I've read. I feel like she was a really good person, a lovely woman, and a sweet lady. All of that naturally came out and made her even more beautiful.

I listen to a lot of K-pop actually. I'm obsessed with NewJeans, which is a girl group. I'm also a huge fan of Dua Lipa. I love Rihanna. Oh, and Ariana Grande's new song has been on repeat.

I probably would still be in school because I wanted to become a clinical psychologist. 

P.M. Routine

At night is when I try to get all the vitamins and nutrients into my skin routine. I normally start off by double cleansing. If I have makeup on, I want to make sure everything is off of my face. I’ll go in with a toner and then I'll go in with two types of serums from this Phillipino brand called Deoproce. I usually do like a hyaluronic acid serum and a glycolic acid serum, which is amazing. Then I’ll go in with a gel-based moisturizer that feels a bit lighter. After that, I like to lather on a thicker moisturizer, which usually feels like Vaseline. I use this baby skincare brand for eczema called Aveeno. I have very dry, sensitive skin, so that just locks in all the moisture. 

Wind Down

When I lie down in bed, I'm normally on my phone. I’m trying to change it because it’s a bad habit. Currently I’m trying to limit my screen time to 30 minutes. I usually like to put on a movie or a TV show and just keep it on in the background to help me fall asleep. Sometimes I’ll listen to a podcast or even Headspace to meditate a little before sleeping.

What To Look For, and Avoid, in a Hair Growth Shampoo

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jerry Shapiro recommends natural ingredients like vitamin B3 and castor oil. Furthermore, he encourages buyers to find formulas that incorporate caffeine and niacinamide. "Caffeine reverses the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the main hormone involved in hair loss. It is also known to increase blood circulation to the scalp and extend the anagen phase," he explains. "Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, an essential nutrient that supports many cellular processes. It also plays an essential role in preventing inflammation."

Meanwhile, fellow dermatologist Dr. Shani Francis recommends avoiding hair growth shampoos with harmful sulfates that can strip your hair of the natural and essential oils that it needs. Sulfate-free shampoos cleanse without lathering, so they're gentle on hair. Other ingredients to avoid? Parabens, silicones, and phthalates.

All three chemicals are commonly found in haircare products—and can send your hair growth journey in the wrong direction. "Parabens are preservatives that have been proven to mimic estrogen and disrupt the delicate hormonal balance," explains Dr. Shapiro. "Sulfates usually dry or irritate the scalp and skin. Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a preservative to avoid bacterial growth, but is a potent allergen. Phthalates are hidden in fragrances, but they are endocrine disruptors."

Dr. Antonella Tosti, a Professor of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami, also emphasizes the importance of taking care of one's scalp and hair follicles. She warns to steer clear of the preservative MCI/MI (Methylchloroisothiazolinone/Methylisothiazolinone), "which can cause scalp inflammation and hair loss." She also advises avoiding UV filters, including titanium dioxide nanoparticles and oxybenzone/benzophenone.

Can Shampoo Make Your Hair Grow?

Yes, the best hair growth shampoos can speed up your lengthening process. There are other practices you should consider adopting in pursuit of longer, healthier hair. Dr. Shani Francis, board-certified dermatologist and member of DevaCurl’s Expert Curl Council, says that supplementing a hair growth shampoo with a diet rich in omega-3s, fiber, sulfur ("our hair has a lot of sulfur in its internal structure"), and protein will really speed up the process. Foods like lean meats, leafy greens, nuts, beans, and fish fit the bill.

Why Isn't My Hair Growing Quickly?

Many factors can contribute to hair not growing as quickly as you'd hope. Most roads lead back to your overall health and habits. Dr. Antonella Tosti, a Fredric Brandt Endowed Professor of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami and President of the American Hair Research Society, points out that androgenetic alopecia—the most common cause of hair thinning in young women—"is often precipitated or aggravated by environmental factors that cause increased hair shedding." Those can include everything from systemic disorders to medications and crash diets.

Dr. Jerry Shapiro, a dermatologist at the New York University School of Medicine who specializes in hair loss, adds that "stress is one of the main causes in young adults, and causes telogen effluvium (large number of follicles in resting phase)." Diets low in iron, zinc and Vitamin D, or low-calorie or protein-heavy diets, can also be responsible for hair loss, he says. In addition, "medications for acne containing vitamin A, antibiotics, antidepressants, birth control pills, steroids, and weight control pills can also produce hair loss."

Both Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Tosti advise patients to keep an eye on their central part line—if you notice a gradual widening of the line, your hair could be thinning. Attending Luar's New York Fashion Week runway show last night, the actress disrupted her beauty routine with an entirely new look—one that changed her appearance in ways fans haven't seen before.

Polanco's beauty transformation had several components worthy of a double take. She swapped her lighter lipsticks for a deep red shade with a hint of ombré on the inner part of her lower lip, accentuating her prominent Cupid's bow and subtly overlining her full lips. She coated her eyes in bright, silvery eyeshadow with serious Y2K energy. And, most dramatic of all, she covered her strong eyebrows in makeup with a bleach-like effect.

Polanco's light brows transformed her face, playing up the contrast between her eyes and her darkly painted lips. She also channeled runway looks worn everywhere from the models Pat McGrath styled for Maison Margiela's Artisanal Spring/Summer 2024 show to Kendall Jenner and Irina Shayk's various fashion month runway looks. Allow me to provide some color. Her idea of a mental reboot: Laying in bed and doing absolutely nothing. Her beauty icon? Rihanna (same, same). On her off-time, she’s an aspiring “pilates mom.” And ,she too walked the middle school halls with overly-plucked eyebrows.

Don’t be mistaken though: She’s come a long way with her beauty knowledge. “When I started working more consistently, I obviously learned more about makeup and beauty products from having to be on set,” she exclusively tells Marie Claire. “Now, I’ve kind of got it down to a T.”

Rise & Shine

If I'm not working, I love to sleep in and I will probably wake up naturally around nine. I check my phone and I kind of lay in bed till 10:00 a.m. and then I get up. I’m trying to not look at my phone the second I get up though. 

Morning Maintenance

My skin has been on a huge journey throughout my life. I remember having the worst breakout around 2021 when I was filming 13 Reasons Why. It was awful—but that’s when I really got into skincare. I learned that tretinoin is my best friend in the world. When my skin is looking consistently good, it's because I've been really good with wearing tretinoin.  

I usually cleanse my face with Cetaphil. Then I put on this Murad Environmental Shield, which is really good because I get hyperpigmentation. The vitamin C helps with resurfacing and keeps my skin bright. I get dark circles as well, so I use the Murad vitamin C underneath my eyes. I’m a huge fan of the Barbara Sturm serums. I love the anti-pollution drops and the vitamin B serum she has. During the winter, I patch all of that up with Weleda Skin Food. I also use an SPF—I really like Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen. 

Power Start

I've actually had a fixation breakfast the last couple of weeks. It might be a bit gross to some people, but I've been making toast with butter, soft boiled egg, and then mayo on top with pepper. I know the mayo really turns people off. Sometimes I'll do it with smoked salmon as well if I have it in the fridge. 

Signature Makeup Look

I'm not that great in the makeup department, so I kind of keep it simple. I know right now my eyebrows are giving thick, but that’s because I had my makeup done today. I have no eyebrows, so I always fill them in so you can see what I’m feeling and what expressions I’m giving. I use this Anastasia duo powder brow in dark brown and go over it with the Glossier Boy Brow. I was a sucker for the brand when they came on the scene and I still love them. I’ve always stuck with them. 

I also love the NudeStix in Sunkissed. I love the way it looks on my skin because it's this darker berry color. You just put it right on your face and blend it in with your fingers. I also use the cloud paint in the shade Storm and the YSL concealer. I use shade number five if you’re curious. I usually put on lip gloss of some sort and call it a day. I’ve been using the Fenty one that’s brown with sparkles in it. I love brown lip glosses because my lips are brown. It just brings everything out. 

Fitness Fix

It’s a running joke that when I’m not working I turn into a pilates mom. I do go to pilates, but I’ll also go to Barry's Bootcamp. I love group exercise classes. There’s something about running and loud, aggressive yelling that just gets me going. I force all my friends to go with me. I’m also a big walker. I usually love to walk around Silver Lake Reservoir, which is nice. Or go hiking at Griffith Observatory. It’s very typical LA and I’m not ashamed of my green juice and a hike. It’s in my DNA at this point.

Self Care Ritual

I will lay in bed and do nothing. It’s lovely. Honestly. A bath or really hot shower is also the best feeling ever when I’ve had a long day. Doing nothing in bed is the best feeling in the world though. I won’t even look at my phone or read a book or watch anything. I just like to lay and sit.

Signature Scent

I don't really have a signature scent. I’ve just recently started wearing perfume when I go out because in theory I want to be a person who has a signature scent. Something I do wear every single day though—which I stole from my boyfriend—is the Aesop spray-on deodorant. I wear that every day so I guess deodorant is my signature scent. 

Cheap-But-Chic

My go-to forever has been the Maybelline Big Shot Mascara. I’ll also grab CeraVe and my Skin Food while I’m there. 

Beauty Icon 

Rihanna because she really did something with diversity in the beauty market. She set the bar. I have such a specific skin tone that changes throughout the year and I really feel like her brand is focused on undertones. It was always really hard when I would go on set and they didn’t have a foundation that worked for me. Artists would have to mix so many different shades. I just love what she brought to beauty. She’s also stunning and perfect in every way. 

Daily Playlist

I make a playlist every year. My current one has 400 songs. There's “Never Alone” by Budgie, which is a fun song, Some Jay-Z, a little Aretha Franklin. It’s a big mix of things. It really depends what mood I’m in.

Backup Career

When I was younger I thought I would be a psychologist because I was really interested in therapy. It’s the study of humans, which is actually similar to acting. It all falls under the same umbrella.

P.M. Routine

My nighttime routine is pretty similar to my morning routine, it’s just less products. When you wake up, you want to put stuff on your skin that protects it from pollution and whatnot. But at night, I just wash my face and exfoliate. I put on my tretinoin, a good moisturizer, and go to bed.

What to Look for

Color

As with any highly pigmented form of makeup, color is key in the best everyday lipsticks.

"Opt for versatile shades that complement your skin tone and maybe work well with different outfits," says DiSabatino.

Everyday lipsticks should also be versatile. (It's what their names imply, after all.) "Select a lipstick that can transition easily from casual to more formal settings," the expert adds.

Ease of Application

"A lipstick with a user-friendly applicator or packaging can enhance the overall experience," DiSabatino advises, especially when you're looking for a lipstick you can wear day after day.

For a full eight hours (or longer) at work, reapplying lipsticks every few minutes isn't ideal. DiSabatino recommends keeping an eye out for long-wearing formulas with color that lasts throughout the day.

Hydration

Finally, as with all makeup and skincare, it's important to take care of yourself while looking glam. An everyday lipstick might be a personal beauty signature, but swiping one on day after day can dehydrate your lips.

To combat dryness before it starts, DiSabatino recommends comfortable formulas with moisturizing ingredients. "Opt for lipsticks with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, or vitamin E," she suggests. "If you notice your lips are on the dryer side, reserve matte lipsticks for special occasions, as they can be more drying than creamy or satin formulations."

For hydrated, happy lips, "lip prep is key," DiSabatino says. Applying a hydrating balm before your makeup will create a moisturizing, protective barrier between your lips and a potentially drying formula.

Even so-called everyday lipsticks shouldn't be worn literally every day. Just like your skin needs rest from heavy foundation and powder, your lips will also appreciate a lipstick time-out. For some TLC, DiSabatino recommends lip masks to replenish moisture and regular exfoliation to remove dry skin.

What to Look for

The best lipsticks for fair skin vary by undertone. To find yours, take a quick look at the veins on your wrist: If they're blue, you have a cool undertone, whereas if they're green, you have a warm undertone. If you see a bit of both—or your veins look in between blue and green—you have a neutral undertone.

Allow your undertone to guide which shades you try first. "If you have fair skin with a cool undertone, opt for a red that is blue based," Badro advises. "If you have fair skin with a warm undertone, opt for a red that is orange based." Have a neutral undertone? Either category works.

Regardless of specific undertone, the makeup expert will always recommend a red lipstick for people with fair skin. Soft corals and soft pinks are also failsafe choices. When plum tones are on the table, Badro advises one with a pink undertone. "This will suit people with fair skin because it will provide some warmth to the skin," she explains.

What to Avoid

You should feel comfortable wearing any lipstick you want regardless of conventional wisdom. But if you're seeking guidance for fair skin specifically, Badro recommends steering clear of rusts or dark chocolate browns. "These tones tend to look best on darker skin with a warmer undertone," she explains.

How to Test

In-store: Retailers aren't likely to allow testing directly on your lips. "Pre-Covid, makeup counters were able to shave down the lipsticks, swipe with alcohol, and allow the customer to try on the lip," Badro tells Marie Claire. "Recently, some counters have changed this."

If a store no longer offers disposable lipstick applicators, she suggests testing the shade on another part of your skin that resembles your lip color. "Sometimes, the inside of your wrists and/or forearm are great for this," she says.

Online: See if your website of choice offers a lip quiz or a virtual try-on. Many sites also show images of women with different skin tones swatching each color on their wrists to give you an idea.

Two is a coincidence, three is a trend. And when Kylie Jenner makes four, you have a movement on your hands. Pink hair is having a moment and celebrities including Jenner, Megan Fox, Ciara, and Shania Twain are taking note.

Throughout Super Bowl weekend, Fox, Ciara, and Twain all took cues from Jenner (who possibly took a cue from Karol G, who possibly took a cue from early 2010s Jenner) and wore blush-hued hairstyles. One by one, the women appeared online with similar hair colors, each suited to their individual style. Two of the stars even ran into each other (Fox and Ciara, at Roc Nation's Sports Super Bowl Party on Friday, February 9).

The women championing this emerging trend have a hairstylist in common: celebrity favorite Dimitris Giannetos, who tackled all three famous heads. The first to go pretty in pink was Fox, who showed off the color a week earlier at the Grammys. A bit more bubblegum-hued than her counterparts, she kept her dark roots, wearing the candy color with a "rock n roll texture," wet look, and punky Pamela Anderson-inspired updo over the course of the weekend.

Next came Twain ("Blush locks for legendary Shania Twain!" wrote Giannetos in an Instagram post on Friday, February 9), whose cool roots featured less of a stark contrast than Fox's. With blonde highlights weaved in, her hair was worn down to her waist, middle parted and softly curled.

Ciara rounded out the trio, embracing long, pink-blonde hair to kick off an eventful weekend (and a series of brilliant game day weekend looks). "Noo bc if I keep seeing this hair mine is gonna be pink again," commented a fan on Giannetos' photo of the "How We Roll" singer. "On Super Bowl Sunday, we wear pink," wrote another.

After Jenner dyed her hair pink in January, online searches for "pink hair dye" increased more than 14 times the average search volume. Searches for "Kylie Jenner pink hair," meanwhile, saw a 1,086 percent increase worldwide.

Jenner has already returned to her dark roots and a Kris Jenner-inspired short haircut to match. Still, with the data to back it up and a new wave of pink ladies officially on our hands, there's no doubt the hue is happening.

Last week, the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles, and Camila Morrone walked the red carpet wearing a Chanel couture dress. We loved the fashion, but as beauty editors, we couldn't help but focus on the makeup that went with it. It was the epitome of quiet luxury, combining elevated neutrals to create a look that was fresh-faced with a subtle retro influence.

Morrone's makeup artist Mary Phillips (who also works with the likes of Kendall Jenner, Sydney Sweeney, and Dua Lipa) described it as a "60s twist on timeless beauty." When she shared a product breakdown on Instagram, we were shocked to discover that she used a $195 Chanel lipstick to create Morrone's perfect rosy-beige lip color. Yep, you read that right—$195… for one lipstick. Even though it's incredibly expensive, all it takes is one glance at Morrone's finished look to think it's worth every penny.

Here's the exact lipstick Phillips used on Morrone. The shade is called Rouge Beige. It's a rosy beige that, to us, is a necessary addition to our nude lip collection—not only for the timeless, '60s-esque color but also for the high-tech formula.

Throughout the entire football season, the 34-year-old has been wearing bold red lips. Now, we have an idea as to what formulas have the staying power to withstand her sweaty post-win smooches on the field.

In an Instagram story posted. shortly after the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory, celebrity makeup artist and brand founder Pat McGrath shared a series of "kiss proof red lipsticks" that have been worn by Swift, a known fan of the brand. "Red lip takeover," McGrath wrote in the first slide, going on to promote four Swift-approved red hues from her MatteTrance Lipstick collection.

McGrath's choices included Rouge 8 (a mid-tone brick red), Forbidden Love (an "ultimate classic red"), Obsessed! (a bright orange red), and Elson (the beloved blue red that Swift is known to favor).

"Get ready for kickoff tomorrow with KISSPROOF red lips as seen through the eras of the ICONIC Taylor Swift. It is such a joy watching these moments back: The VMAs, on set of 'Bejeweled' directed by Taylor herself…CHILLS," wrote the makeup artist in a pre-Super Bowl Instagram post.. "Taylor, thank you! It is so fun watching you from the sidelines and even more of a pleasure working with you through the years."

Unsurprisingly, she predicted Swift's game day look perfectly.

Although the singer chose to go with a more neutral lip for a night of Vegas afterparties, images from her on-field celebration with Kelce show that her game day lip did stay completely intact.

Sports are great and all, but when it comes to the Super Bowl, I will shamelessly own up to the fact that I’m watching for the commercials—not the field goals. Last year, my undivided attention went to Jennifer Coolidge’s e.l.f. Cosmetics promo, in which the White Lotus star single-handedly convinced the world that she’d play a great dolphin—and that the drugstore brand’s Power Grip Primer deserved a shot. The glow factor is so beautiful because it refracts in such a lovely and flattering way that maximizes dimension,” she says. While a revamped makeup routine was certainly a silver lining to come out of her latest gig, the highlight (pun intended) was truly getting back together with some of her old cast members. “Good friends are forever. Just months after giving chunky bangs a place in the spotlight, Katie Holmes' fringe has grown long enough for her to officially co-sign the side bang trend—with a (literal, physical) twist.

While celebrating the opening of Chanel's latest 5th Avenue Boutique on Wednesday, February 7, the 45-year-old showed off a hairstyle and lip color that were slightly different from her typical, low-key beauty choices. As much as I love a bold lip color—deep reds, rich purples, the whole nine—there will always be a special place in my heart for a nude lipstick. I grew up in an era when neutral lipsticks for deeper skintones weren’t exactly easy to come by, so I grabbed at practically any formula I could find—liquid, cream, matte, satin. You name it, I tried it, hoping each time I'd finally land on the one.

For deep complexions, the first thing to consider is the natural pigment of your own lip, says celebrity makeup artist Billie Gene. How to Find the Best Shade for Your Skin Tone

It's important to note that everyone should feel good wearing whatever shade they want, regardless of others' opinions or traditional beauty standards. But if you’re not sure where to start when looking for a lipstick shade, consider your skin’s undertone. “For cool tones, I like to use blue-based lip products like a blue-based red or a mauve-pink," says Gene. "For a neutral to warm complexion, I love using orange-based shades like corals or bricks.”

Lip Tone

The natural color of your lips can impact how your lipstick of choice shows up on you, especially if the formula isn't as highly pigmented. "I notice shoppers typically swatch lipstick on their wrists to understand what the color will look like," says Bell. "However, one should try to always swatch the lip color in the middle of their bottom and upper lip.

Lip Liner

Lip liner is your friend. It provides an even base of color for your lipstick to sit on, allowing you to manipulate the lip color to work for you. “Some days you might want your red to be a bit more muted, so then you’d just use a brown liner,” says Barose. “On other days, you might want your lip to pop. In that case, you’d use a matching lip liner.”

I love this creative combination of the two styles, and appreciate that Megan chose to make her top lip darker than her bottom lip. She's embracing the natural shade difference between the two while still indulging in bright colors.

Megan's hair also proved that bangs aren't always a bad idea, after all. Her blunt fringe channels 1950s pinup stars like Bettie Page, who wore her black hair with a distinctive fringe while the rest cascaded down her back—just like Megan's look here. The artist nodded to Black beauty and put a contemporary spin on this classic style, though, by laying her edges beautifully along her temple. The curved shape of the baby hairs subtly mimics the coil of a snake, referencing the serpentine imagery prevalent in "Hiss" and its music video.

Lipstick is my all-time favorite category of makeup. From bold, bright hues to deep browns to muted neutrals, I love experimenting with the endless possibilities that the lip category has to offer. But, like many elements of style, the lipstick color you choose can either make or break your look. There are few beauty woes as devastating as picking a formula that washes you out, isn't pigmented enough to show up on your lips, or makes your lips look like they've disappeared—all three of which can plague users with medium skin tones. So, to avoid these makeup mishaps, I've asked Jaime Perez, a professional makeup artist with Bobbi Brown, for her input on how to select the best, most flattering lipsticks for tan skin.

For starters, Perez advises, "Play with a few shades first so you have an idea of how much color you like and if you like a cool tone versus a warm tone. Your personal preference is very important to finding a shade you love."

Indeed, it's important to keep in mind that, beyond ensuring your formula of choice is of premium quality and strong pigment, pulling off a lipstick primarily has to do with your comfort level and confidence. Below, Perez talks how to find the shade that makes you feel best.

What to Look for

For starters, Perez says it's best to begin with the basics.

"I like to start with a perfect nude shade of lipstick for a medium/tan skin tone," she explains. "Look at the natural tones of the lips and find a lipstick that marries top and bottom lip tones together. Sometimes the lips are the same shade, and sometimes the top lip is lighter or deeper than the bottom lip. Going with the deeper shade of the lips helps to create a more natural look that enhances your skin tone." In other words, when finding an ideal nude, consider a neutral that's slightly darker than the tone of both your top and bottom lips.

Beyond neutrals, the world is your oyster. Perez says, "Great shades can be, but are not limited to, roses, browns, berries, and reds. These shades give enough color to complement a medium tan skin. These are shades typically found in their natural lip tones, cheek colors, and skin tones." Personally, I love berry and purple shades on my own lips.

What to Avoid

While many colors work well on medium skin tones, there are, of course, certain shades that tend to be less than flattering.

"I don’t recommend colors that are too close to skin tone, because they don’t complement your skin. It can look flat, unhealthy, and make your lips disappear," says Perez, and I agree. Personally, I also stay away from neutrals that are lighter than my skin tone, which can result in a sickly, ashen appearance. 

When looking for a lipstick, it's also worthwhile to assess your undertone. The most popular way to do this is to take a look at your veins: If they're blue, you have a cool undertone, and if they're green, you have a warm undertone. If they're somewhere in the middle, or you see a bit of both, you're neutral.

"Colors that are too cool tone (blue tone) can stand out too much for a warmer skin tone," warns Perez. "This takes away that overall healthy look of your makeup."

How to Test Lipstick

The best, most fool-proof way to know if your lipstick suits you is to give it a shot.

"Test lipstick colors in a store where you can see them all together to compare," Perez suggests. "When trying on, sanitize the lipstick with alcohol, wipe it on a tissue for a clean surface, and then apply. If you don’t want to try on your lips, you can swipe the color on your fingertip instead of the back of your hand, since that is the closest tone to your lips."

Or, if you're shopping online, see if the website you're on allows you to do a virtual try-on or a lip quiz. Perez points out that Bobbi Brown offers this, along with a virtual consultation session or chat. Brands like Pound Cake, Maybelline, MAC, and Revlon have online quizzes.

Kendall Jenner is tall, stunning, and, in case you somehow hadn't noticed, has insanely long lashes. They're so long, that many, including yours truly, wondered if her lashes' length was courtesy of some expertly executed lash extensions. But leave it makeup artist Mary Phillips to myth-bust and cue us into the model's secret in one fell swoop. It's Jenner's top-notch (drugstore!) mascara that gives her lashes that extra oomph.

When Emma Stone embarked on her recent press tour for the movie Poor Things, she chose looks that played into the innocence of her character, Bella Baxter. Most recently, she was seen attending the Fendi Haute Couture Spring/ Summer 2024 show, decked out in an unforgettable nostalgic look that injected some much needed warmth into the gray Parisian atmosphere. 

The star’s makeup was anchored in her dark, ombré lip, which was a burgundy shade of red lined with a darker shade, growing gradually lighter towards the middle of the lip. This was particularly noticeable with Zendaya’s bottom lip, while her top lip had a more consistently dark hue all around. 

Zendaya is only the latest star to try this trendy style, and is joined by the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Jenner. The latter even posted a tutorial on how to achieve the look. This proliferation of dark, often glossy lips featuring heavy use of lip liner signals the return of 1990s beauty. After all, the trend was initially championed by Black and Brown superstars like Naomi Campbell and Jennifer Lopez, and was a makeup staple beyond the red carpet throughout the entirety of the decade. In the early 2000s, the trend gave way to lighter, brighter glosses, just as 2023 makeup mood boards were overrun with clean girl, “no makeup makeup” looks rather than highly pigmented lipstick and lip stains.

Now the pendulum has clearly swung back around to dark lipstick—a move that ‘90s babies like Zendaya will undoubtedly adore. Below, products to help you channel the trend.

The Promise

While 111Skin unfortunately cannot provide mail-to-order Botox service, their scientists have seemingly come up with the next best creation: Wrinkle Erasing Retinol Patches. Designed with tiny needle-like structures that deliver intense concentrations of anti-aging ingredients, these overnight patches are thought to be the next best, much less invasive solution, touting a 17 to 23 percent reduction in wrinkles over the course of four weeks. 

“In medical terms, this has what’s called a transdermal delivery system,” 111Skin founder and board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Yannis Alexandrides exclusively tells Marie Claire. “There are little cones that contain four ingredients: retinol, sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid), together with ascorbyl glucoside, which is a form of vitamin C that works synergistically with retinol to improve wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Finally we have a peptide that mimimizes the activation of the mimetic muscles of the laugh lines and around the frown area. It’s basically Botox in a skincare product.” 

What further sets these little guys apart from patches existing on the market: They’re tailor made to fit in specific areas. Each pack comes with two semi-circle patches fitted for the under eye or nasolabial fold, two narrow strips that can be popped on forehead lines, and a triangle-shaped sticker that nuzzles right where eleven lines, otherwise known as glabella lines, pop up. 

As retinol-devotee, I had to try these innovative patches out for myself. My full review, ahead. 

Why I’m Obsessed

I’ve been using prescription retinol since I was 12-years-old, and now, as I enter my late 20s, I’m thankful to say that my ritualistic use of the anti-aging super ingredient has paid off. I have a few fine lines, but I’m not yet thinking about Botox. Travel down a few inches though, and my very neglected décolletage tells a different story. In theory: I know I’m supposed to bring my skincare down to my chest. Unfortunately, I lack follow through (whoops) and it’s abundantly clear. The skin on my lower chest has been looking all kinds of crepey and wrinkly as of late. 

So, when I sat down with Dr. Yannis to learn all about 111Skin’s new Wrinkle Erasing Retinol Patches, I felt compelled to ask if I could use his shiny new patches a little off label. He gave me his stamp of approval (skin is skin after all), and later that night I embarked on a journey to smooth out the fine-lines-turning-into-wrinkles on the lower part of my chest. I used the patch that was technically designed for eleven lines the first night, tearing off the adhesive and pressing it into my dry, clean skin. It had a great stick—there was no slipping, sliding, or peeling up at the edges. 

I was admittedly semi-concerned that the promise of little pointed cones would hurt, but I felt absolutely nothing. As the patch warmed up with my body heat, the four-ingredients activated their delivery. I caught some REM sleep while the product was hard at work, waking up in the morning well rested—and to my surprise—less wrinkly. The depth of the lines on my chest were visibly plumped up.

I knew it would take some time to achieve my desired results. Directions say to use the patches around three times a week until you get your goal results, then scale down to once per week treatments for maintenance. So, over the course of the week, I applied every shape in the package to my chest—each covering the entire target area. It worked—better than I could have imagined. At the end of week one, my chest was smoother than it’s been in years. I’m very impressed and rest assured: I’ll be whipping these out the exact second I notice crow’s feet.

On Tuesday, January 23, the brand is launching a collection of brand-new lipstick and liner colors, marking the first-ever lip range in their beloved Hollywood franchise. Falling into three categories—the matte Hollywood Reds lipsticks, the satin Hollywood Pinks lipsticks, and the matching Lip Cheat lip liners—the products boast vintage glam colors paired with fan-favorite formulas that could only be of this decade.

"Darlings, my NEW! Hollywood Beauty Icon Lipsticks are the Hollywood secret to INSTANT STAR CONFIDENCE!!!" wrote makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury via Instagram, sharing a campaign starring Kate Moss and Jourdan Dunn. "I have decoded the perfect nuanced pinks and reds to suit EVERY complexion!!!"

To kick things off, the Reds will be available in five shades, all featuring the brand's award-winning Matte Revolution formula.

"It’s designed for every woman, of all ages and any skin tone, offering a buildable, transfer-proof, long-lasting, matte color with up to 10-hour wear," reads a press release shared with Marie Claire. "Inspired by the glamorous, old Hollywood lights, the 3D-effect red pigments architect the lips, creating the ultimate lip shape for the special Hollywood moment in your life."

Another five lipsticks come in shades of pink, ranging from the soft-mauve "Red Carpet Pink" to the candy-colored "90s Pink." These new offerings feature the brand's soft, satin-y, and shiny K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula, which offers a "full and luminous look."

Last (but certainly not least), the Lip Cheat lip liners will also be available in five new shades ("Icon Baby," "90s Pink," "The Queen," "Mark of a Kiss," and "Red Carpet Red"), echoing both reds and pinks from the collection. Infused with jojoba seed oil, the waterproof liners promise both 24-hour hydration and a perfectly matched pout.

Although we’re in the dog days of winter, that doesn’t mean we need to resign ourselves to wearing dark or neutral colors for the rest of the season. Instead, the fashion and beauty trends taking over red carpets and mood boards at the moment are dominated by bright, bold colors like red and pink. Last night’s Emmy Awards were a testament to this, with spring motifs like florals and bright colors taking over the red carpet. 

But this move toward color didn’t just take place at the awards show red carpet. Lucy Hale, for instance, stepped out in midtown Manhattan last night wearing head to toe red, complemented by bright pink lipstick. The actress’ glossy lip color was the centerpiece of her beauty look, accompanied by rosy yet subdued blush and a layer of eyeliner along the top of her lids. The makeup looked fabulously sunny in tandem with her recently lightened hair—another summer-inspired trend that scores of celebrities have taken part in since the onset of winter. 

I love Hale’s lipstick, in particular, not only because of how great it looks on her, but also because it marks a move away from the nude and no-makeup trends that have taken over celebrity beauty in recent months. After all, makeup is supposed to be fun, and your face is a fresh canvas open for you to paint.

The first month of the year sets the tone for the biggest makeup trends to come, so it’s no surprise that the 2024 Emmys are serving up some massive beauty inspiration. If you need proof, allow me to direct your attention to Taraji P. Henson’s gorgeous raspberry-meets-purple blush situation. It extends from the apples of her cheeks all the way up to her temples, proving that colored blush is most definitely "in" for the next calendar year. 

“I was so inspired by her raspberry/eggplant colored dress that I knew I wanted her skin to be warm and for her cheeks to pop,” makeup artist Saisha Beecham said in a press release shared with Marie Claire. “For her cheek pop, I generously dusted L'Oréal Paris Infallible Up to 24H Fresh Wear Soft Matte Blush, blending into her eyeshadow. It’s so bright and a lot goes a long way.”

Bright and bold blush that doubles as a face contour is predicted to transcend the Emmys red carpet.  “As we simplify our makeup looks, we're using blush to contour more than actual contour,” makeup artist Jamie Greenberg previously said to Marie Claire when asked about her 2024 makeup predictions. “Contouring is just a technique to shade the face in a way that sculpts it however you want. You can make your cheekbones look more raised and snatched by applying glow blush on the outer part of them and up toward your temple," she added. 

Henson’s makeup wasn’t the only trendy aspect of her glam. Her hair, which featured a slicked back ponytail, also made a huge statement. Despite having chopped her hair into a bob recently, Henson’s hairstylist Tym Wallance made this look possible with a handful of Hidden Crown hair extensions. “Capturing the beauty of Black women was my inspiration for Taraji’s Emmys look. I referenced the 90’s Supermodel to create a sleek, snatched, ponytail,” Wallace shared.
