Europe's tiaras were out in full force as Sweden’s royal family celebrated King Carl Gustaf XVI’s 80th birthday on Thursday, April 30—even if the country’s future queen isn’t old enough to wear one just yet. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s 14-year-old daughter, Princess Estelle, might have been tiara-less, but she looked elegant in a lavender gown as she joined her family and royals from around the world at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

Estelle, who is heir to the throne after her mother, wore a bespoke Christer Lindarw dress for the occasion featuring a short-sleeved, beaded overlay and a floor-length purple skirt. One day, she’ll get to wear a tiara of her own like mom Crown Princess Victoria, who wore the dazzling diamond Connaught Tiara for the banquet. For now, Estelle sported a pair of diamond stud earrings with pink gemstone accents.

Victoria also wore a Christer Lindarw design, choosing a one-shouldered gown in trendy cobalt blue.

Lindarw shared a video of Princess Estella and her mother on Instagram, writing, “Huge honor to be able to design Crown Princess Victoria and also Princess Estelle's dresses for the King's 80th birthday gala. 💙👑💙 So grateful to have been entrusted. 🙏🏻. Crown Princess Victoria's sister, Princess Madeleine, wore the same Modern Fringe Tiara she wore on her wedding day, pairing it with a blush colored gown covered in silver beading. Meanwhile, Prince Carl Philip's wife, Princess Sofia, also wore her wedding tiara, topping the convertible style with amethyst stones that coordinated with her magenta ombré gown.

Along with the Swedish royals, a number of other royal families attended the party, including Queen Mary and King Frederik of Denmark, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of Belgium and Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

It's that time of year when royals around the world release their Christmas cards, attend festive events and share heartwarming videos of their family traditions, but when little princess stole the show this season. Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden welcomed their fourth child, Princess Ines, in February, and the youngest member of the Swedish royal family had a starring role in a new Instagram Reel on December 16.

The 10-month-old princess joined her seven cousins to help grandma Queen Silvia decorate the palace tree, and she showed off her brand-new teeth and adorable tartan dress in the video. In one scene, Ines, who wears a red plaid dress with white knit tights, plays with a gold ornament, and in another, Queen Silvia reaches down to guide Ines as she swats at the tree.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's daughter Princess Estelle, 13—who will become the queen of Sweden one day—is one of Ines's godmothers, and she proudly held her goddaughter in a group photo with all of the kids and the queen.

Ines and Estelle were joined by the rest of their siblings at the festive gathering, including Estelle's brother, Prince Oscar, 9, and Ines's brothers Prince Alexander, 9, Prince Gabriel, 8, and Prince Julian, 4.

Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill's three kids also joined in the fun, with Princess Leonore, 11, Prince Nicolas, 10, and Princess Adrienne, 7, trimming the tree alongside their cousins.

Queen Silvia has made decorating with her grandkids an annual tradition, and fans praised the Swedish queen for the relatable moment.

"A wonderful queen and grandma ❤️ with her beautiful and cute grandchildren ❤️ and a Christmas tradition that touches the heart ❤️," one fan wrote, while another added, "Always nice to see Queen Silvia with all her grandchildren 😍 it really warms your heart ❤️ Princess Ines is also really golden 😍."

Just when you think tiara season (a.k.a. December) couldn't get any better, the Swedish royals made yet another glamorous appearance on Thursday, December 11. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held in Stockholm every December, and members of Sweden's royal family never fail to make a fashion statement at the formal events surrounding the Nobels.

This year, it was Princess Madeleine who stood out at King Carl Gustaf's Nobel dinner, wearing a New Year's Eve-ready gown by Monique Lhuillier. The plunging style featured a black velvet top with a shimmery gold sequined skirt, and Madeleine accented it with a historic tiara from the family's collection.

Although most tiaras are covered in diamonds, pearls or other precious gems, the Napoleonic Steel Cut Tiara stands out because it doesn't have any gemstones at all. The gold design is crafted from gold and polished steel beads, according to The Court Jeweller, and was created for Hortense de Beauharnais, Empress Joséphine's daughter and Queen of Holland, in the early 1800s.

Hortense's jewelry was passed down through the family and ended up in the hands of Queen Josephine of Sweden and Norway, who died in 1876. But the tiara, along with a set of other jewelry, disappeared until it was discovered in 1976 by art historian Göran Alm, per The Court Jeweller.

Alm was looking for objects to include in an exhibition at the palace and happened to stumble upon the steel-cut treasures inside a storage cupboard. Fortunately, Queen Silvia had the pieces restored, and the tiara went into regular rotation with the royal family.

Along with her more than 200-year-old tiara, Princess Madeleine wore another piece of historic jewelry, wearing the same diamond earrings she wore on her wedding day. The enormous drop earrings date all the way back to the 1700s, and she paired them with a more modern piece in the form of a Cartier Love Bracelet, adding a gold cuff and a diamond bracelet to her ensemble.

The Swedish royals dressed up for the most glamorous night of the year as they attended the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm. As has been the tradition since 1901, the ceremonies are held on December 10 at the Stockholm Concert Hall. Laureates receive the Nobel Prize medal and diploma from King Carl XVI Gustaf, and Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, and Princess Madeleine attended the ceremonies in their glittering––and sustainably-conscious––ballgowns and tiaras.

This year, Crown Princess Victoria looked sensational in a very special gown. The Jacques Zehnder evening gown was first worn by her mother, Queen Silvia, way back in 1994. The vintage gown is constructed from “zibeline, a special faille-like binding that is no longer made,” per the brand. The crown princess topped the look with the Baden Fringe tiara, Sweden’s iconic 19th century fringe tiara, along with pearl earrings and a pearl bracelet.

Princess Madeleine also pulled a gown from the back of her royal closet, although she chose a much more recent design that she wore to a gala in 2023. The icy silvery-blue gown with a cape-style sleeve was designed by Jenny Packham, who recently created a similar style for the Princess of Wales. Princess Madeleine coordinated the cool-hued gown with the Aquamarine Kokoshnik tiara and aquamarine chandelier earrings that she first wore in 2008.

Not to be missed, Queen Silvia chose a sparkling ochre gown that she also wore to a gala in 2023. The golden gown popped against a sea of black suits at the Nobel Prize Ceremonies. To complete the outfit, the Queen wore the Swedish Nine Pronged Tiara, an enormous diamond tiara that Queen Silvia favors for many events.

All three royal women chose gowns, tiaras, and jewels from the royal wardrobes, eschewing new fashion items for a more sustainable sartorial choice. Every December 10, the tiaras and ballgowns are a small glimmer at the Nobel Prize Ceremonies as leaders in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and Literature receive the highest acknowledgement of their work.

At just 13, Princess Estelle of Sweden is focused on her studies instead of attending official royal engagements. But on Sunday, October 19, the future queen of Sweden made a rare public appearance while watching the BNP Paribas Nordic Open in Stockholm with her dad, Prince Daniel, and Swedish Olympic swimmer Sarah Sjöström.

The teen coordinated with Prince Daniel in shades of blue at the tennis match, wearing a classic navy crewneck sweater and a pair of jeans. Princess Estelle wore her hair twisted back in a long braid, accessorizing with a simple pair of knotted silver stud earrings.

Meanwhile, Daniel—who is married to Crown Princess Victoria, the eldest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia—wore blue chinos and a navy blazer with a black watch plaid shirt underneath. Like Princess Estelle, Sjöström went for a casual look in jeans, a ball cap and green sweater, appearing deep in conversation with the future queen and Prince Daniel as they took in the men's singles final match.

The tennis outing was a rare chance for Estelle to enjoy one-on-one time with her dad at a public event. The princess has one brother, Prince Oscar, 9, and with their parents destined to take the throne one day, their royal schedules are busier than ever.

Sports are also an important part of Prince Daniel's life. Before marrying Crown Princess Victoria, he was her personal trainer and owned his own gym. Today, he focuses on causes that improve the physical and mental health of young people in his royal work, including Prince Daniel's Race, which is held annually in Sweden.

Like Prince William and Princess Kate have done with 12-year-old future King Prince George, Victoria and Daniel have gradually introduced Estelle to royal duties. In June, she joined her parents for an event at the Princess Estelle Sculpture Park to introduce a new piece of art. And privately, she marked another milestone when she served as godmother to Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip's baby girl, Princess Ines, at her baptism this summer.

Princess Estelle is set to take the Swedish throne one day, but for now she's enjoying vacation like any other teenage girl. Crown Princess Victoria—who is next in line to the Swedish throne—and husband Prince Daniel welcomed a Cavapoo named Rio into their family in 2020. The curly pup is seen in a number of snapshots in their summer video, with Princess Estelle looking all grown up as she cradles Rio in two beautiful new portraits. The teenage princess wears an ivory sweater in one picture as she holds her dog, and in another close-up shot, she's dressed in a tan hoodie while Rio looks right into the camera.

The photogenic dog, who made his Instagram debut in May 2020, also poses with Prince Oscar in another image from the family's summer holiday. The Reel also features plenty of peeks at the idyllic Swedish countryside, including a photo of Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar posing by a lake and a sweet sunset selfie of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

The crown princess and her family typically spend their summer break at Solliden Palace, a retreat located on the island of Öland, and their Reel showed the family enjoying plenty of quality time outdoors.

On that note, Crown Princess Victoria has announced her plan to visit every national park in Sweden in a recent Instagram post. On August 26, the palace shared a photo of the future queen walking in a forest, writing, "Yesterday, the Crown Princess walked in the Bearland National Park, which is located in the Åsele patchland. There are 31 national parks in Sweden and the Crown Princess plans to visit them all."

As for Princess Estelle, she was last seen publicly on July 14 when she joined her family to celebrate mom Crown Princess Victoria's 48th birthday at Solliden Palace. The 13-year-old future queen is a student at Campus Manilla on Royal Djurgården in Stockholm, and like Britain's Prince George, she doesn't carry out official royal duties just yet, with her parents allowing Estelle to live as normal of a childhood as possible.

One day, 13-year-old Princess Estelle will become the queen of Sweden, but on Monday, July 14, it was time to celebrate the country's next monarch—Estelle's mother, Crown Princess Victoria. The Swedish royal family celebrates Victoria's birthday, known as "Victoriadagen," at Solliden Palace each summer, and King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia honored their daughter's 48th birthday during Tuesday's festivities. While the crown princess was the star of the show, royal watchers couldn't help but point out how grown up Princess Estelle looked—especially when it came to her height.

Wearing gold ballet flats and a blue floral mini dress from Swedish brand Indiska, Estelle appeared just a few inches shorter than dad Prince Daniel, who is said to be 5'11. And Crown Princess Victoria—who is around 5'7 and was wearing her go-to 4-inch Valentino espadrille wedges with a green Saloni maxi dress—is just a hair taller than her daughter in a series of family portraits.

Meanwhile, little brother Prince Oscar, 9, wore a crisp white button-up and khaki shorts as he posed with his parents and big sister.

Fans waited outside the palace to greet the royal family, who then took a carriage ride to the ruins of Borgholm's castle for the annual Victoriadagen concert. "During the concert, which is broadcast on Sweden's Television, a fundraiser is carried out for the benefit of Radio Aid's 'Crown Princess Victoria's Fund,'" the Swedish royal family wrote on Instagram. "The foundation provides support to associations for children with disabilities or chronic illness in Sweden."

Crown Princess Victoria's sister, Princess Madeleine, attended the event with husband Chris O'Neill, and Crown Princess Victoria's brother, Prince Carl Philip, attended without wife Princess Sofia, who is on maternity leave after the birth of Princess Ines.

Speaking of Ines, Princess Estelle was made a godmother to her baby cousin this summer, joining her aunt and uncle during the royal baby's christening in June.

State banquets are always a highlight on the royal calendar, filled with pomp, ceremony, elaborate decor and, of course, tiaras. The Swedish royal family owns quite the collection of jewels, and they brought out the bling for a state banquet in honor of an Icelandic state visit on Tuesday, May 6. While King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine and her husband, Chris O'Neill, attended the glittering event, Princess Sofia was notably absent.

Although 40-year-old Sofia, who is married to Prince Carl Philip, recently brought her three-month-old daughter, Princess Ines, for her first balcony appearance on April 30, she stayed home from the banquet.

The Swedish princess gave birth to baby Ines on Feb. 7 and therefore is officially on maternity leave, but she did step out on the palace balcony last month as it was her father-in-law the king's birthday.

Along with baby Ines, Princess Sofia and Prince Carl Philip are the parents of three boys: Prince Alexander, 9, Prince Gabriel, 7, and 4-year-old Prince Julian.

Sofia might have skipped this week's state banquet, but her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law dazzled in heirloom family jewelry—and even sneakers—at the event.

Queen Silvia kept it comfy in white trainers as she recovered from a foot surgery, pairing her sneakers with a sparkly pink gown and matching wrap. And although her footwear might have been sensible, she went big with her jewels. The Swedish queen wore a diamond tiara known as Queen Sofia's tiara, adding a massive pink topaz and diamond necklace and matching earrings.

As for Crown Princess Victoria, she repeated a white gown covered in colorful floral appliqués, adding the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik tiara to her look. Meanwhile, Princess Madeleine—who wore a strapless, berry-hued gown—debuted a special family diadem, wearing the King Edward VII Ruby Tiara. Per The Court Jeweller, Madeleine is the only modern royal to have worn the 120-year-old piece other than Queen Silvia.

I don't know about you, but when I'm shopping for a ballgown, H&M is probably the last place that would come to mind. But in the case of Crown Princess of Victoria of Sweden, she somehow managed to pull off an old high street evening dress with a diamond tiara—and look absolutely incredible.

The heir to the Swedish throne stepped out in a design from H&M's conscious collection—but with her own twist—as she attended the annual Nobel Laureates dinner at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Crown Princess Victoria debuted the ruffled dress in one of her stunning 10th anniversary portraits in 2020, but made an alteration to the navy design with the inclusion of a sheer short-sleeved overlay (the original piece was sleeveless). She also wore the $290 eco-friendly design to a 2022 event, bringing it out for a third showing at Wednesday night's Nobel gathering.

What does one wear with a budget ballgown? Piles of diamonds and a historic tiara, naturally. Sweden's future queen wore the Boucheron Laurel Wreath Tiara, which was passed down to her by her great aunt, Princess Lilian, when she died in 2013, per The Court Jeweller.

However, the sparkler actually has a connection to the British royals. The tiara dates back to the early 1900s when it was given to Princess Margaret of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria who later married King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden. Sadly, she died before her husband took the throne, but Margaret's tiara lived on through her daughter-in-law, Princess Lilian, and now Crown Princess Victoria.

The diamond piece resembles two rows of laurel wreaths and features an open center with a diamond dangling down from the center. It can also be worn as a necklace, as Princess Margaret loved to do, per The Court Jeweller. Victoria wore her tiara with even more bling, adding dazzling drop earrings and a diamond necklace along with a massive brooch pinned to her sash.

Crown Princess Victoria wasn't the only royal who made a glittering impression at the Nobel Laureates dinner; mom Queen Silvia, sister Princess Madeleine and sister-in-law Princess Sofia all wore their best gowns and jewels for the evening.

Wednesday was the second day in a row that the Swedish royal ladies busted out their tiaras, with the family also attending the Nobel Prize ceremony on Dec. 10. For the occasion, Victoria stunned in a shimmering pink dress with a sheer black overlay, choosing one of her other favorite headpieces, the Baden Fringe Tiara—a design that also evokes the diamond whopper that Queen Camilla wore to a recent state banquet.

When it comes to the British royals, we're not often treated to a tiara moment, but luckily, the Europeans do bust out the jewels a bit more frequently. Tuesday, Dec. 10, however, was an especially dazzling day, as both the Swedish and Dutch royals attended major events that required equally major diamonds.

The Swedish royal family takes part in the Nobel Prize ceremony each December, and as usual, they pulled out all the stops in the tiara department. Queen Silvia led the way, wearing a show-stopping diamond tiara trimmed with sapphires known as the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara, per The Court Jeweller.

She chose to wear the piece's matching earrings and brooch (the tiara is part of a suite of jewels dating back to 1810), but left the set's enormous necklace at home. The Swedish queen kept the sapphire theme going with a blue sequined gown and the most gorgeous twisted updo I've seen in a long time.

The heir to the throne, Crown Princess Victoria, went for a glittery pink Christer Lindarw gown with a sheer black overlay, pairing it with her go-to Baden Fringe Tiara. The all-diamond piece is laid out in a fringe design, somewhat similar to the one Queen Camilla recently pulled out of the vaults for the Qatari state banquet in London, and Victoria wore the tiara with pink topaz and diamond drop earrings to go with her gown.

Princess Madeleine—who recently moved back to Sweden from Florida with husband Chris O'Neill and their daughters—stunned in a sparkling green off-the-shoulder Fadi El Khoury gown with a dramatic train. Her tiara is perhaps my favorite of the night, the Connaught Diamond Tiara.

Its looped designs feature flower-like diamonds and dangling diamond drops, and the tiara can actually be worn as a necklace, too—as The Court Jeweller pointed out, Madeline wore it this way to the 2016 Nobel event. She brought out the green in her gown with sparkling emerald and diamond earrings and a matching brooch.

Last but certainly not least, Prince Carl Philip's wife, Princess Sofia, looked incredible in a royal blue gown by designer Soeren Le Schmidt; per UFO No More, it was a bespoke piece she wore for a recent Vogue Scandinavia shoot. Sofia chose to wear her wedding tiara, which is a clever diamond piece that can be customized with different stones at the top.

For the Nobels, the princess—who is expecting her fourth child in February—chose to use London blue topaz accents to go with her gown, and she wore matching topaz and diamond drop earrings.

Moving on to the Netherlands, the country's royal family hosted a state visit for the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa—and the Dutch ladies brought out some gorgeous diamond tiaras for the occasion.

The ever-fabulous Queen Maxima looked glamorous in a diplomatic gown, choosing a scarlet hue to represent one of the colors of the Portugese flag. She paired the patterned Jan Taminiau style, which she's worn on previous occasions, with a huge ruby and diamond tiara.

The piece comes from the Mellerio Ruby Parure, a set of jewels that was given as a Christmas gift to the Netherlands' Queen Emma in 1888, per The Court Jeweller. For the banquet, Queen Maxima also wore the set's matching earrings, bracelet and three-strand necklace.

And rounding out the group was Princess Catharina-Amalia—the country's 21-year-old future queen—who glittered in the prettiest periwinkle gown. The cape-style Tadashi Soji design was covered in sparkling sequins, and she wore the dress with the same diamond star tiara her mother wore on her wedding day.

As for the rest of her look, she brought out even more bling, wearing a massive diamond necklace and bracelet along with glittering drop earrings. A look fit for a future queen, indeed.

Ariana Grande is back on a whimsical style streak while promoting the upcoming film adaptation of Broadway's Wicked, and her latest look is nothing short of magical.

Grande unveiled her second look of the Wicked press tour on Instagram, where she posed in a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta mini dress. Designed by co-creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the sleeveless garment features a sheer nude base overlaid with an assortment of large embroidered flowers.

Grande's stylist, Mimi Cuttrell, accessorized the eye-catching mini with diamond stud earrings and Valentino bow-accented pumps for a playful touch.

Cuttrell's choice to dress Grande in a garment covered in flowers appears to be an intentional reference to Wicked. Look closely at Grande's dress, and you'll notice that the stunning red and pink blooms are poppy flowers.

The original 1939 Wizard of Oz film— the inspiration for the Wicked musical and the 1995 novel it's based off of—features a scene in which the Wicked Witch puts Dorothy to sleep using a field of poppies

Grande's red satin heels also feel like a reference to Dorothy's ruby slippers, a prominent symbol in the Wizard of Oz.

Grande's floral outfit isn't the only thematic look that she has worn to channel herWicked character.

Earlier this month, Grande kicked off the tour wearing a pale pink Balenciaga dress. The gorgeous gown, covered in sheer layered bows, was a nod to her character, Glinda the Good Witch, who wears pink dresses throughout the film.

In addition to the upcoming Wicked musical, Grande has embarked on another exciting creative adventure. The performer recently announced that she is working on a new studio album, Eternal Sunshine, which is slated for release in March. The "yes, and" singer has promoted the album with a completely different aesthetic, featuring 2024's red trend and sheer accessories.

With Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s shocking announcement on New Year’s Eve that she is abdicating the throne after 52 years on January 14, the world will suddenly be without a queen regnant (a queen born to the throne, not a consort that married into the family). Much like her third cousin Queen Elizabeth, Margrethe was the longest-reigning monarch in her country, and her loss to both Denmark and the global royal stratosphere is profound.

So, yes, royal families around the world may be helmed by a boy’s club right now, but that won’t last. Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway all have heir apparents that are women—so, when it comes to the global royal landscape, the future is very, very female. Long may she reign!

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Though Crown Princess Victoria, 46, is the eldest of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s three children, after her brother Prince Carl Philip was born in 1979, she was bumped down behind him in the line of succession because he is male—until Sweden changed its constitution so that birth order determined the line of succession regardless of gender. This change was effective January 1, 1980, once again making Victoria the heir apparent after seven months as No. 2. (Most of the women here will be on the throne thanks to absolute primogeniture, just like what happened in Sweden.) When Victoria takes the throne, she will be Sweden’s fourth queen regnant and its first since 1720. Of these group of future queen regnants, Victoria is so far the only one that is a wife and mother; she married Daniel Westling in 2010, and they have two children.

Princess Elisabeth of Belgium

Princess Elisabeth, 22, is the eldest of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde’s four children and became Duchess of Brabant and heir to the throne in 2013 after her grandfather King Albert abdicated. After taking part in her first royal engagement at just five years old in 2006, she gave her first public speech (in Dutch) in 2011, when she was nine. She undertook military training for her future role as queen, and in August 2020 entered the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, studying social and military sciences. She swore the officers’ oath in September 2023, being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Belgian Army. She reads history and politics at Lincoln College, Oxford, and has rowed crew under the name “Elisabeth de Saxe-Cobourg.” She speaks Dutch, French, German, and English, has taken classes in Mandarin Chinese, and holds children with learning difficulties, the elderly, the homeless, and the disabled as causes close to her heart.

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands

Princess Catharina-Amalia, 20, became first in line to the throne when her father, King Willem-Alexander, ascended in 2013—when she was just nine years old. The eldest of Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima’s three daughters, Catharina-Amalia is the first Princess of Orange in her own right (Prince or Princess of Orange is the title given to the heir to the throne in the Netherlands). She made headlines in June 2021 when she announced her refusal to accept her €1.6m annual income, as it made her uncomfortable that she hadn’t yet done anything to earn it. (Respect.) She’s currently studying politics, psychology, law, and economics at the University of Amsterdam and, in addition to speaking Dutch, English, and Spanish, has taken classes in Mandarin Chinese.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway

After Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s birth in 2004, the already popular Norwegian royal family experienced a surge in popularity, likely because Ingrid, 19, will one day become the country’s second female monarch—and its first since the fifteenth century. Ingrid is the eldest child of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the grandchild of King Harald, who is currently on the throne. She has a younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, whom she ranks above in the line of succession thanks to the implementation of absolute primogeniture in Norway in 1990. This year, she is expected to undertake military training for 12 months at the Engineer Battalion in Brigade Nord.

Princess Leonor of Spain

Princess Leonor, 18—the eldest of two daughters born to King Felipe and Queen Letizia—became first in line to the throne following the abdication of her grandfather, King Juan Carlos, in 2014, when she was eight years old. Since then, Leonor has taken part in a bevy of firsts: her first public engagement in 2018, when she was 12; her first public speech on her thirteenth birthday that same year; her first public solo engagement in 2021; and her first international trip without her parents in 2022. This past September, Leonor took the heir’s oath, officially declaring her as next in line to the throne and during which she swore allegiance to the Spanish constitution. Known as the Princess of Asturias, last August Leonor joined the General Military Academy to start her three-year military education and is currently an officer cadet in the General Spanish Military Academy. She is fluent in Spanish and English, has studied Mandarin Chinese, and, when she ascends to the throne, she will be Spain’s first queen regnant since the mid-1800s.

The British royal family is nothing if not interesting, but they’re not the only game in town. There are numerous royal families around the world—each with their own drama, and each with their own fashion-forward, glamorous standout. We’d like to introduce you to some of our favorite global royals whose fashion we follow fastidiously (and their lives and work, too).

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, soon to be Queen Mary

Perhaps the most buzzed-about global royal of the moment is Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who, after her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe’s bombshell abdication announcement on New Year’s Eve, will become Queen Mary on January 14. In doing so, Mary will become the first Australian-born queen ever. She met her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, in her home country when he visited for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney; they met at a pub called the Slip Inn, and successful ad exec Mary had no idea that “Fred” was the heir to the Danish throne. They married in 2004 and have four children and, in addition to being someone that Denmark can look up to, the Princess of Wales reportedly considers Mary the royal blueprint to follow.

Queen Letizia of Spain

Before marrying into the Spanish royal family in 2004, Queen Letizia was an accomplished journalist who worked for the Spanish version of the economic channel Bloomberg before moving to CNN+. She reported on the 2000 U.S. presidential election from Washington D.C., and in September 2001 she broadcast live from Ground Zero in New York City following the 9/11 attacks; in 2003, she filed reports in Iraq following the war. After a 10-year courtship, she married her first husband in 1998, and they divorced the next year; she married King Felipe (then Prince Felipe) in 2004, and they have two daughters. She became Queen in 2014 after her father-in-law, King Juan Carlos, abdicated the throne, and has wowed ever since.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Fun fact about Sweden’s heir to the throne: though Crown Princess Victoria is the eldest of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia’s three children, after her brother Prince Carl Philip was born in 1979, she was bumped down behind him in the line of succession because he is male—until Sweden changed its constitution so that birth order determined the line of succession regardless of gender. This change was effective January 1, 1980, once again making Victoria the heir apparent after seven months as No. 2. When Victoria takes the throne, she will be Sweden’s fourth queen regnant and its first since 1720. Victoria has been open about struggles with dyslexia, anorexia, and prosopagnosia, which makes it difficult to recognize familiar faces—especially difficult in the line of work she does. She speaks four languages (Swedish, English, French, and German), married her personal trainer Daniel Westling in 2010, and is the mother of two children.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden

Victoria’s younger sister Princess Madeleine is the baby of the five-person family of Carl Gustaf and Silvia, and, though born third in line to the Swedish throne, is now eighth thanks to her siblings’ children. An enthusiastic equestrian, Madeleine does work to support the Crown, though she currently lives in the U.S. with her family and has since 2018. (They are expected to move back to Sweden sometime this year.) She married British-American financier Christopher O’Neill in 2013, and they have three children.

Princess Sofia of Sweden

The middle child of Carl Gustaf and Silvia is the aforementioned Carl Philip, who married the former Sofia Hellqvist in 2015. Prior to joining the Swedish royal family, Sofia was a glamour model and reality television star, appearing on Paradise Hotel (and even making it to the end). She is a certified yoga instructor, studied accounting, and is a mother of three. 

Queen Rania of Jordan

All eyes were on the Jordanian royal family last summer for the royal wedding of the year, attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales and a host of other global royals. The mother of the groom—Crown Prince Hussein—is Queen Rania, the wife of King Abdullah. Before marrying him, Rania worked at Citibank and Apple; their courtship was swift, as they married in 1993—just five months after meeting at a dinner party. They are the parents of four children.

Princess Charlene of Monaco

Princess Charlene’s title is a bit misleading: though she is Princess of Monaco and her husband, Prince Albert, is Prince of Monaco, in that country it means that they are on the throne. Albert had already reigned for six years, since 2005, when he and Charlene were married in 2011, and prior to her marriage and relocation to Monaco, Charlene was an Olympic swimmer from South Africa. Charlene is the mother of young twins and her work as a royal primarily revolves around sports, AIDS, and underprivileged children. Her late mother-in-law is Grace Kelly, and Charlene's style rivals the legendary actress-turned-princess.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

Queen Maxima originally hails from Argentina and was working in marketing when she met Prince Willem-Alexander in Seville, Spain in 1999. Upon their initial meeting, he introduced himself only as “Alexander” so that she wouldn’t know he was a prince; when he finally did tell Maxima that he was the heir to the Dutch throne, she thought he was joking. They eventually married in 2002 and became king and queen upon the 2013 abdication of Queen Beatrix, Maxima’s mother-in-law. She is the mother of three and has promoted social integration of immigrants, LGBT rights, and financial inclusion as a working royal. 

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway

Crown Princess Mette-Marit was a commoner and a single mother with a disadvantaged past when she married the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon, in 2001; though the Norwegian public was initially largely skeptical of her, they have since warmed, and Mette-Marit is beloved. In addition to her son from a previous relationship, she and Haakon have two children together, and her royal duties were somewhat restricted after a diagnosis of a form of pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium

Queen Mathilde is the first native-born Belgian queen in history, and when she married then Prince Philippe in December 1999, theirs was the last royal wedding of the millennium. They now have four children and became king and queen in 2013; causes close to her heart include decreasing poverty in Belgium, education, literacy, and the position of women in society.
